'Lucky escape': Family just makes it out as home collapses

A family has made a 'lucky escape' after the ceiling of their home began to collapse while they were sleeping in Sydney's southwest.

The woman renting the home told Today she, her partner and her children were fast asleep in the bedroom when they started to see and feel the ceiling collapse, just after 4:30am today.

Emergency crews arrived at the Condell Park property around 5am to find part of the home had collapsed.

An exclusion zone has since been established.

The family felt the entire property begin to shake before they and their three pets fled the home as it collapsed.

NSW Fire and Rescues' Adam Dewberry said the family escaped just in time.

"It's really dangerous, it's a really lucky escape for the people that are living here," he said.

Home collapses Condell Park, Sydney.

Four cars were damaged in the incident, as well as the neighbouring property, which was hit by the falling debris. 

"There's not a lot we can do here because of the damage it has occurred," Dewberry said.

"It is pretty unusual. It is a very new home.

"So what's occurred here will have to be investigated by the regulators and the other authorities and no doubt the owner and insurance."

The family has found alternative accommodation after the incident.
