Fisher missing in croc-infested waters after friend heard 'splashing'

A Queensland man who vanished in crocodile-infested waters in the state's far north has been identified as 65-year-old Kevin Darmody.

Darmody, a fishing enthusiast, was last seen at 3.30pm yesterday at the Kennedy River at Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, about 340 kilometres north-west of Cairns.

A desperate search operation is currently under way but has so far returned no trace.

9News understands Darmody, from Laura, was fishing with a friend at the time of his disappearance.

His friend reported his absence to authorities and described hearing a "splashing sound" at the time of the disappearance, according to reports.

Police, volunteers from the Queensland State Emergency Service and a Rescue 510 helicopter crew, led searches yesterday evening and at first light this morning.

Department of Environment and Science wildlife officers were assisting with the search.
