A man who was seriously injured in a shooting outside a Melbourne shopping centre over the weekend has been released from hospital.

Eric Catanese, 28, was sitting next to Robert Issa, 27, in a white Mercedes outside Craigieburn Central when four masked men approached the car on Saturday.

Multiple shots were fired, hitting both men inside the car, and killing Issa.

Catanese was rushed to hospital in a serious condition, where he remained until Monday.

The 28-year-old's mother has told 9News that her son is a "good kid" who works hard.

Police believe four men fled in a black Range Rover Sport, which was later found torched in Westmeadows, about 12 kilometres away.

The men wearing balaclavas then hopped into a blue Toyota Corolla, which was then dumped in Reservoir near Merri Creek.

Police are continuing to investigate.
