Queensland firefighters are working to contain a massive blaze at Tara in the Western Downs region, with conditions expected to worsen tomorrow.

The fire is burning near Golden Glow Road and is expected to impact Bennett School Road soon.

People in the area have been told to leave immediately, as it will soon be unsafe to drive and lives are at risk.

Crews performing damage assessments have confirmed 44 homes across the region have now been lost.

Rural Fire Service Superintendent John Welke has warned there will be a "significant deterioration in weather tomorrow".

"We are expecting winds forecast in the vicinity of 30km/h and quite a warm day," he said.

A local fire ban has been extended until midnight Friday.

"We have already seen a number of new starts today that are further straining resources, please we implore people to be very conscious over the next week, our crews are very tired and we need to ensure that we are able to support the community of south-western Queensland," Welke said.

Firefighters from across the state have been redeployed in the region and Victorian fire crews are due to arrive in the area later this week to give locals a reprieve.

"Prepare to leave" warnings are in place for the communities of Colosseum, Miriam Vale, Carnarvon Gorge, Buckland, Consuelo and Rewan.
