Hot weather is expected in some of the nation's capital cities for Australia Day as temperatures are set to rise.

If you have plans to head out in Melbourne in the afternoon or evening, it is best to pack an umbrella, as there is a medium chance of showers.

Residents can expect temperatures of 35C and humid conditions.

A cloudy day is in store for Brisbane with a medium chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon.

There is also the chance of a thunderstorm in the west.

Temperatures are likely to hit 28C.

Perth residents can expect a sunny 31C day with no chance of rain.

Over in Darwin, there is a 60 per cent chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm.

A top of 33C is expected, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The Australia Day forecast for Adelaide is humid, partly cloudy with temperatures likely to reach 31C.

There is a low to moderate fire danger for the Mount Lofty Ranges and Adelaide Metropolitan areas.

The Hobart area will experience cooler temperatures, ranging between 16C and 21C.

A shower or two is expected in the morning and early afternoon.
