Wobbegongs live in shallow coastal waters and are thought to be endemic to Australia, the Australian Museum explains.

They range from the southern coastline of Australia from southern Queensland to south-western Western Australia.

They often lie on sand or rocky bottoms and are frequently seen by divers.

The rescue comes amid estimates about eight million tons of plastic waste ends up in the ocean each year.
