'Ready to strike her': Terrifying near miss in a Melbourne backyard

A home security system has captured the terrifying moment a Melbourne toddler nearly ran afoul of a brown snake, forcing a mother to spring into action.

Daniella Vizzini noticed the venomous brown snake slithering through her Lalor backyard yesterday.

The reptile was metres away from two-year-old Eva who was splashing in the pool completely and utterly oblivious to the danger.

Danielle Vizzini sprung into action when a brown snake slithered towards Eva.The snake seen in the top right corner, while small, could deliver a potentially fatal bite.

Vizzini told Today she was on the phone to her friend when she saw something out of the corner of her eye.

At lightning speed she jumped up and grabbed Eva by the arm, pulling her to safety.

"We were shocked and quite scared actually," she said.

"It was a split-second moment really. And the reaction that just shocked us all.

"Before I knew it I was yanking Eva out of the water so far. It was terrifying."

Danielle Vizzini said brown snake sightings in the north Melbourne suburb are rare, and suspects long grass is exacerbating the issue. The brown snake proved a tricky catch. It was eventually captured out the front of the western Sydney home.

Eastern brown snakes are Australia's second most venomous land snake, and an untreated bite can kill in under half an hour.

Th mum previously claimed the snake was "ready to strike" Eva.

"I saw it rise up out of the ground because it was in like an 'S' shape. It was ready, it was ready to strike her," she told 3AW.

"I've just screamed 'Snake! Snake!".

Vizzini said a brown snake sighting in the north Melbourne suburb are unusual.

"We definitely have got an issue with the grass at the moment around the area."
