Another passenger positive as hantavirus cruise ship heads to Netherlands

A cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak is scheduled to arrive in the port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Monday morning (local time).

The MV Hondius has spent the past six days sailing from the Canary Islands, where the remaining passengers were escorted off the vessel by personnel in full-body protective gear and boarded flights to more than 20 countries to enter quarantine.

The outbreak on the ship has reached 11 cases, nine of which have been confirmed.

The MV Hondius cruise ship is anchored at a port in Praia, Cape Verde.

Three passengers have died, including a Dutch couple who health officials believe were the first exposed to the virus while visiting South America.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said one of the four Canadians in isolation after leaving the ship had tested positive on Sunday and it would share information on the case with the World Health Organisation.

The vessel has made the journey from Tenerife up the coast of Africa and Europe with 25 crew members and two medical personnel. According to the ship operator Oceanwide Expeditions, no one on board is experiencing any symptoms.

The chartered flight from the Netherlands carrying passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship arrives at RAAF base Pearce in Perth, Australia.

Crew members who are unable to return home will be quarantined in the Netherlands, the Dutch health ministry said last week. Some two dozen passengers and crew are already in quarantine in the Netherlands, after arriving in the country on a series of flights over the previous two weeks.

Eighteen Americans are currently under observation at specialised healthcare facilities in the United States designed to treat people with dangerous infectious diseases.

After everyone on board has disembarked, the ship will be decontaminated based on Dutch public health guidelines.

“Personal protective measures are being taken to ensure that the cleaners do not need to quarantine after the cleaning,” the health ministry said in a letter to the Dutch parliament last week.

Public health officials will inspect the vessel before it is allowed to sail again.

The hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius is the first known case on a cruise ship.

The Dutch company that owns the cruise ship said it doesn’t foresee any changes to its operations.

France’s Pasteur Institute said on Saturday it has fully sequenced the Andes virus detected in a French passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship and found that it matched viruses already known in South America, with no evidence so far of new characteristics that would make it more transmissible or more dangerous.

Why massive crowds gathered outside watch stores globally

Hundreds of Aussie watch enthusiasts queued up outside stores to get their hands on the Audemars Piguet X Swatch collaboration.

Audemars Piguet, a luxury Swiss watch company, created the pocket watch with fellow Swiss company Swatch, which is known for its affordable watches.

The highly sought-after collaboration, a pocket watch called the Royal Pop, hit shelves worldwide on Saturday, May 16, with Aussies lining up outside Swatch stores in Sydney to get their hands on the colourful pocket watch.

Videos of the winding line of fold-out chairs and tents in Sydney's Pitt Street have ended up online, with some adding they had seen people lining up since Thursday.

Audemars Piguet is one of the most expensive and exclusive watch companies in the world, so the thought of owning a watch with their branding for under $1000 sent collectors into a frenzy.

The watch is only available at select in-person stores globally.

 Audemars Piguet x Swatch collab

Swatch stores all across the world have experienced similar crowds of people trying to get their hands on the lucrative pocket watch.

Some Swatch stores in the UK actually refused to open their doors due to safety concerns of a crowd crush.

Following the intense crowds and lines, Swatch have released a statement on its website, discouraging people from lining up.

"To ensure the safety of both our customers and our staff in Swatch stores, we kindly ask you not to rush to our stores in large numbers to acquire this product," the statement reads.

"The Royal Pop Collection will remain available for several months.

"In some countries/regions, queues of more than 50 people cannot be accepted, and sales may need to be paused."

In Milan, a brawl broke outside one store, while police in Paris used teargas to disperse the crowd.

The idea behind the collaboration came from pop art, according to the Audemars Piguet website.

"Audemars Piguet and Swatch unveil Royal Pop, a new collection that brings together creativity and audacity with haute horlogerie," it reads.

"Inspired by Pop Art, this collaboration reinterprets Royal Oak iconic codes through a disruptive pocket watch, available in eight models and designed to be worn in multiple ways."

The pocket watch is encouraged to be worn in a number of different ways, including as a necklace and a bag charm.

Mother’s ‘life sentence’ after daughter brutally murdered by husband

Part of Maria Gotencio died the day her daughter Czarina was violently murdered.

Fourteen months on and the pain remains constant as she struggles to support her four young grandchildren through their grief.

"This loss is permanent and irreversible," she told the Victorian Supreme Court today through tears.

Father-of-four Jessie James Tumaliuan, 42, accepted a sentence indication of 20 years as he pleaded guilty in the Victorian Supreme Court this morning.

"It is a life sentence of grief. The damage done to this family can never be undone."

Czarina's killer Jessie James Tumaliuan, 42, barely reacted as he listened to Gotencio read her statement at his pre-sentence hearing.

He admitted he murdered his wife Czarina Tumaliuan, 42, in the backyard of their Werribee home in Melbourne's southwest on March 27 last year.

Tumaliuan had forced his way inside the property and called his wife abusive names as he yelled at her about money.

She tried to flee out the back door but he chased her down and used a kitchen knife to stab her eight times to the neck, head, chest and abdomen.

The entire attack lasted 10 seconds.

Tumaliuan then dragged his wife's body to the back door before he sat down and called triple zero twice.

He refused to let paramedics in but co-operated with police when they arrived.

Gotencio said she wished she could have been there to protect her daughter.

"A part of me died with her," she told the court on a video link from the United States.

Tumaliuan's teenage son also read a statement to the court, saying he had lost the most important person in his world.

"My mum is someone you would call a super-mum," he said over the video link.

"Now there is a big empty space in our hearts that cannot be fixed. It hurts so much that she is no longer with us."

Tumaliuan's barrister Chris Hooper accepted the attack would have been terrifying for his wife, who was entitled to feel safe in her own home.

He conceded it was a very serious example of murder but argued his client had not attended the home with the intention of killing his wife.

Hooper told the court Tumaliuan also made no attempts to hide evidence or frustrate the police investigation, instead calling triple zero himself and waiting at the scene.

The barrister accepted the only expression of remorse has come from Tumaliuan's guilty plea, which followed a sentence indication hearing in January.

Justice Amanda Fox indicated she would sentence Tumaliuan up to 26 years behind bars if he pleaded guilty to murder.

Hooper said while Tumaliuan had no diagnosed mental health or substance abuse issues, his time in custody would be more difficult as he was facing deportation back to the Philippines.

But Justice Fox said Tumaliuan effectively had no ties to Australia, noting his family lived in the Philippines and his children were in the United States.

"Whatever life he made here, he decimated when he committed this crime," she said.

Tumaliuan will officially be sentenced at a later date.

Cake dust that put Gold Coast toddler into coma recalled nationwide

A metallic cake decorating powder is being recalled nationwide after a Queensland toddler ended up in an induced coma after inhaling it.

The 'Creative' branded powder has been for sale since 2019, but has now been found to contain copper and zinc, which can be toxic if inhaled or ingested.

All five colours of the lustre dust are included in the recall.

A Queensland baker has sent a warning to parents after her toddler ingested cake decorating dust and ended up in an induced coma. Professional baker Katie Robinson was making a Bluey cake for a first birthday last Friday when her son Dusty Wildman found a canister of cake decorating gold.
"Dusty was just pottering around like he normally does," she said.

Gold Coast toddler Dusty Wildman spent days in a coma in Queensland Children's Hospital after he found a canister of the cake decorating dust while at home with his mum on May 1.

His mother, Katie Robinson, is a professional baker and had been making a Bluey first birthday cake when Dusty managed to get the lid off the little container.

He became unwell almost immediately, started to cough and became "really distressed", Robinson told 9News.

Robinson learnt the dust contained copper, which would not dissolve in blood and had gathered in Dusty's lungs.

Dusty has since come off his breathing tube and is making a good recovery, although doctors have warned there could still be longer term health impacts.

The label on the cake dust said the product is "for use on removable cake parts" and that it is non-toxic, but Robinson said that it was placed on shelves next to edible products.

The supplier Crumb Australia had already pulled the product from shelves and contacted all stockists prior to the official recall by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The ACCC warned anyone who has purchased the product to stop using it immediately, keep it out of reach of children and return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

The 'Creative' metallic cake powder has been sold at the following locations between 2019 and May 2026: Bake & Deco, Cake Bake Decorate, Cake Deco Supplies, Cake Tinz & Thingz, Cakers Paradise, Cakers Warehouse, Choice Cakes, Chrissie's Cake and Supplies (in the UK), Cupid's Cake Decorating Supplies (since closed), Embellished Cakes, Gold Coast Cake Supplies, Hollywood Cake Decorations, Latorta, One Stop Cake Decorations, Parties Plus More, Silver Stars and Sugartime.
