Kim Jong Un's message to Queen Elizabeth II

North Korea says its leader, Kim Jong Un, sent a letter congratulating Queen Elizabeth II as Britain began a four-day celebration marking her 70 years on the throne.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said on its website Thursday that Kim sent a letter congratulating the queen and the British people. It didn’t provide further details.

North Korea and Britain established diplomatic relations in 2000 and have maintained embassies in each other's capitals despite a steady decline in bilateral ties.

North Korea’s relations with the West have worsened in recent years as it accelerated its nuclear weapons and missile development in a push to acquire an arsenal that could threaten the United States and its allies in Asia.

North Korea has criticised Britain in recent years for supporting international sanctions against the North over its nuclear ambitions and human rights record, and for participating in a new US-led alliance to help Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

North Korea has conducted 17 rounds of missile tests in 2022, including its first intercontinental ballistic missile launches in nearly five years, as it pushes brinkmanship aimed at cementing its status as a nuclear power and negotiating economic and security concessions from a position of strength.

US and South Korean officials say there are signs North Korea is preparing to conduct its first test of a nuclear explosive device since 2017.

'War of attrition': Ukraine conflict enters 100th day

Today Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its 100th day, with few signs the fierce fighting that has killed thousands and devastated the country is near ending.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin planned for a lightning takeover when he launched his "special military operation" on February 24, fierce Ukrainian resistance, backed by Western arms, dashed his initial goal.

But experts believe thousands of Russian casualties and the destruction of valuable military equipment have not deterred Putin from his goal of conquering Ukraine and he is digging in for a long conflict.

"He is prepared to send as much cannon fodder to Ukraine as it takes to claim victory," Leonid Petrov, of Australian National University in Canberra, told 9News.

"The value he puts on human life is extremely low."

Petrov said the only limitations on Putin, who has been the subject of health rumours, were natural ones.

"He will hold his ambitions for restoring the Russian empire for as long as he lives."

On the 100th day of the war, fighting is concentrated in Ukraine's east where Russian forces are battling to take the city of Severodonetsk.

Taking the strategically important city has become a key aim for Russia as it seeks to claim control of the Donbas region after failing to capture the capital Kyiv early on in the war.

Defence analyst Marcus Hellyer, of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, told 9News that the conflict has entered a phase of "grinding attrition".

He said over the coming weeks, Russia and Ukraine will be mobilising extra military resources and sees little prospect in the fierce fighting easing.

"The Russians have tens of thousands of armoured vehicles in reserve and extra manpower from places such as Syria they can draw on," Hellyer said.

"And Ukraine have more Western weapons coming to keep their resistance going."

And he says after initial setbacks in the war, Putin is prepared to play a long game in the conflict, but the West will have to balance support for Ukraine with mounting damage to the global economy.

"There are a few cracks emerging in western support … people are starting to ask questions like 'we want Ukraine to win but how long can we keep paying record petrol prices'."

Albanese hails Queen in moving Platinum Jubilee tribute

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has recalled Queen Elizabeth II's famous visits to Australia in a moving tribute as Commonwealth leaders began to honour monarch's Platinum Jubilee.

Albanese lit a beacon to the Queen in Canberra on Thursday night shortly before, on the other side of the world, the Queen emerged onto the balcony at Buckingham Palace for the climax to her birthday parade.

The prime minister hailed a "life of service, fidelity, integrity and humanity" and wished her majesty the nation's "very warmest congratulations".

"Sydney was a young city, and a young queen stood here, full of promise and full of purpose," he said.

"As we mark this Jubilee, we can say that she fulfilled that purpose. Her Majesty has amply kept her promises."

"Hers continues to be a life of unswerving loyalty unfailing dignity, grace under pressure, a warm welcome for every person she met."

Australia and New Zealand were among 54 Commonwealth countries marking the jubilee on Thursday night, but Canberra was one of the first capitals to participate in the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacon event.

Each city will light a beacon in royal purple to honour her majesty.

"I look forward to officially renaming Aspen Island to Queen Elizabeth II Island later this week as a mark of Australia's appreciation and respect for Her Majesty," Albanese said, earlier in the day.

Other key parts of Australia's involvement in the celebration include a Sydney mum who composed the official anthem for the jubilee which will be sung as beacons are lit across the world.

Lucy Kiely from Haberfield beat hundreds of entries in the international competition, Song for the Commonwealth, for her lyrics to be sung by choirs around the world during the official event.

Sydney's Government House lit up in royal purple for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
