At risk Australians are being advised to get a fourth pre-winter dose of COVID-19 vaccine as the Omicron sub-variant pushes up case numbers ahead of a potentially serious flu season.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) today confirmed the fourth dose had been approved and would be rolled out from April 4.

But who should get them, and is there a risk of getting the flu and coronavirus vaccine close together?

Who should get a fourth COVID-19 vaccine?

Only four "at risks" groups have been approved for a fourth booster shot by ATAGI:

These include:

• People 65 and over
• First Nations Australians 50 and over
• Residents in aged care or disability settings
• Immunocompromised people.

Can I get a flu vaccine and COVID-19 booster at the same time?

In updated health advice, ATAGI said it is okay for patients to get both a flu shot and a COVID-19 booster on the same day.

"All COVID-19 vaccines can be co-administered (given on the same day) with an influenza vaccine," it said.

ATAGI explained a resurgence of influence is expected in 2022 with borders reopening.

"If a person had a 2021 influenza vaccine in late 2021 or early 2022, they are still recommended to receive a 2022 formulation of influenza vaccine when it becomes available," it said.

Can under 65s get a fourth vaccine?

At this stage the only people under 65 that can get a vaccine are the immunocompromised, residents in aged care or disability settings and Indigenous Australians 50 and over.

Minister for Health Greg Hunt said the fourth booster rollout is unlikely to expand beyond these groups in the immediate future.

"It is only recommended for those groups at this point in time," Mr Hunt said, explaining ATAGI looked at international evidence from countries such as Israel to make their determination.

"There is always room for review.

"(But) at this stage we're not predicting this is likely to change."

When should I get the fourth COVID-19 booster?

Mr Hunt said the fourth vaccine is recommended four to six months after the last booster.

Doses will be administered at pharmacies, GPs as well as government-run vaccine hubs.

What vaccines are available for boosters?

There are four coronavirus vaccines currently approved for use in Australia; AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax.

Does it matter which vaccine I get for the booster?

The Australian Government said it is okay to mix vaccine doses but this is dependent on your age.

"If you are 18 years or older, you can have the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine as a booster dose regardless of which vaccine you had for your first two doses," it said on its website.

"You can also receive the Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) vaccine if you can't have the Pfizer vaccine for medical reasons.

"If you are 16 or 17 (or have turned 16 since you had your primary dose of COVID-19 vaccine) you can have the Pfizer vaccine as a booster dose."

Fiji has announced all isolation requirements for international travellers will be dropped in less than two weeks.

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum confirmed from April 7, a requirement to spend three nights isolating at a resort quarantine facility will be dropped, regardless of the country of origin.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen welcomed the news and said a large influx of holidaymakers are expected in coming months now requirements have relaxed.

"The timing for the Fijian Government's decision to relax Fiji's entry requirements could not be better as we head into the best time of year to visit Fiji," Mr Viljoen said in a statement.

While the isolation rule has been relaxed, there are still certain requirements for travellers to successfully enter Fiji.

People will still be required to show proof of vaccination, a negative pre-departure rapid test from their country of origin, up-to-date travel insurance and a negative rapid test within 24 hours of arrival.

The Ukrainian armed forces said they destroyed a large Russian landing ship at the port of Berdyansk in southern Ukraine.

The port, which had recently been occupied by Russian forces with several Russian warships in dock, was rocked by a series of heavy explosions soon after dawn.

Social media videos showed fires raging at the dockside, with a series of secondary explosions reverberating across the city.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine said they had "destroyed a large landing ship," which they named as the Orsk in a post on Facebook.

Several Russian ships had been unloading military equipment at Berdyansk in recent days, according to reports from the port by Russian media outlets.

The Ukrainian armed forces said that besides destroying the Orsk, two more ships were damaged.

"A 3000-ton fuel tank was also destroyed. The fire spread to the enemy's ammunition depot. Details of the damage inflicted on the occupier are being clarified," they said.

It's not known what weapon was used to attack the port.

Analysis of videos uploaded on Thursday showed that one Russian naval vessel left the port soon after the explosions.

The Russian Ministry of Defence had previously reported that "the large landing ship Orsk is the first warship of the Russian Federation to enter the port of Berdyansk".

"It delivered equipment – armoured personnel carriers," the ministry said.

"The ships of this project are very spacious and can take on board a large amount of equipment, up to 20 tanks or up to 40 armoured personnel carriers."

Berdyansk sits on the Azov Sea and is roughly 70 kilometres southwest of Mariupol.

The city has a small naval base and a population of about 100,000.

A fourth "winter dose" of COVID-19 vaccine has been recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) for four at risk groups.

Adults aged 65 and over, First Nations Australians aged over 50, residents in aged care and disability settings, along with immunocompromised people over the age of 16 will be eligible, as reported by 9News Federal Political Reporter Chris O'Keefe.

O'Keefe earlier said ATAGI is concerned about rising cases and waning immunity from vaccine booster shots.

"As we get into winter that fourth dose might be critical to the population to keep them out of hospital," O'Keefe told Today.

"The federal government is calling it the winter dose and it will be given out to everybody over the age of 65, four months after their last booster shot."

It comes as COVID-19 cases rise around the country, driven by the spread of the Omicron BA.2 sub-variant.

Infectious disease expert Professor Robert Booy welcomes the news, saying it's critical to get booster doses when variants emerge.

"It becomes more important if the disease starts returning, especially if a variant happens," he said.

"For the moment the immunosuppressed and the vulnerable are becoming into focus for the fourth dose."
