A body has been found in the search for a jet skier who went missing in Sydney's south.

Emergency services were searching for a man in his 30s who went missing last night at Burraneer Bay, Port Hacking.

NSW Police said they were alerted at 7.30pm, with reports three men had been thrown from a jet ski into the water.

The driver and one passenger — who were both wearing life jackets — were rescued.

But a third man couldn't be found.

Marine Area Command, PolAir, Sutherland Shire Police Area Command, NSW Ambulance and Surf Life Saving NSW hunted for him for an hour before it got too dark.

Police divers also joined the search today, and found a body.

"About 10.40am, Police Divers located the body of a man in the vicinity of Shiprock Reserve, Dolans Bay," NSW Police said in a statement.

"While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the missing jet skier."

Police said they will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The driver of the jet ski, a 44-year-old man from Dolans Bay, is in St George Hospital with suspected chest injuries, Police said.

The passenger, a 39-year-old Yowie Bay man, was not injured.

Queensland has recorded 765 new cases of COVID-19 on Christmas Day from more than 33,000 tests.

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said the state had been "preparing for a year" for the cases, adding hospitalisations remain low.

There are 2147 people with the virus in the state, and 151 have been confirmed as the new Omicron strain.

"There are definitely more cases, but because of the great work of Queenslanders coming out and getting vaccinated, our hospitalisation rates still remain very low," Ms D'Ath said.

Five people are in hospital due to COVID-19, though the single person in ICU earlier this week has now been moved out.

There are other people with COVID-19 in hospital, but not due to the virus.

There are 566 people with the virus getting care at home.

The Health Minister tweeted a warning, saying "Most Queenslanders don't know someone who has had COVID-19, in the coming days and months they will".

A total of 90.3 per cent of Queenslanders have had their first vaccination and 88.5 have had both.

She said 650 people were 'formally' in quarantine, which was lower than recently due to changed close contact rules.

She thanked interstate travellers for getting PCR tests to travel into Queensland, amid rows over the lengthy testing lines.

She said the rules will be "constantly reviewed" and would be changed when the state reaches 90 per cent double dosed.

Ms D'Ath said three young people on their way to see family had done the right thing, after two of them tested positive.

"At least one of these young people were going to be joining a big family gathering today of 25-30 family members, at least one is over 90 and another is a newborn baby," she said.

"Those family members have been protected from having a positive case gathering with them because of that PCR test."

Ms D'Ath said Cook and South Burnett were among the LGAs which have new cases, with 22 LGAs having cases.

The Whitsundays also has cases.

Another six people have died with the virus in the state, and there are 261 people in hospital, including 71 in ICU.

A total of 42 people are on ventilators.

There were long lines for testing, despite it being Christmas Day.

Children as young as eight are included in the new mask mandate which came in in time for celebrations and means masks must be worn inside again.

However, hospital admissions are way down compared with during the state's last lockdown.

Despite the new restrictions Acting Premier James Merlino promised the state was not heading into a lockdown."

"This is the commitment that we gave to the people of Victoria," he said.

"The promise was if you go and get vaccinated, you can enjoy Christmas and New Year with your families and loved ones and that's exactly what will happen."

NSW cases have topped 6000, a day after mask rules were reintroduced.

The state has recorded 6288 new cases, in figures announced on Christmas Day.

Nobody has died, though there are 388 people in hospital including 52 in ICU.

There were long lines at testing centres including Bondi Beach.

On Christmas Eve there were over 5600 cases and one person died with the virus.

Last minute shoppers in Sydney's CBD wore masks and used QR codes when going into shops, after both rules were reintroduced amid surging Omicron cases.

Plus the countdown is on for density limits again in pubs, bars and other hospitality venues, which must limit numbers to one per two square meters, from December 27.

Christmas flight chaos

It was a miserable countdown to Christmas for thousands of people caught up in flight chaos at Sydney airport.

As well as having to grabble with lengthy waits for the COVID-19 tests needed to travel interstate, a raft of cancellations left people disappointed.

Jetstar and Virgin said several of their flights had to be grounded because of the number of crew members who had been forced into COVID-19 isolation.

The Melbourne and Sydney route was worst hit, with around a dozen Virgin flights and about 10 Jetstar flights cancelled on Christmas Eve.

Passengers took to social media to lash out at the airlines, claiming they had been left in the dark.

"I feel like screaming," one Twitter user wrote.
