Victoria records 1275 new cases as NSW nears 92 percent fully vaccinated

Victoria has recorded 1275 new cases of COVID-19 and a further four deaths from the virus.

The state has almost reached 90 per cent of residents aged over 12 being fully vaccinated.

There are 317 people in hospital and 56 in intensive care.

Coronavirus restrictions were eased on the weekend in Victoria as the state nears a 90 percent double vaccination rate.

The latest figures released on Sunday morning come after news broke late yesterday that a child aged under 10 died after contracting COVID-19.

The child, who had pre-existing medical conditions, is the youngest person in Australia to die from COVID-19.

"The child aged under 10 years, who died with COVID-19, also had other serious comorbidities," the Victorian Health Department said in a statement.

There were 1166 new infections reported in Victoria yesterday.

Queensland down to four known active cases

No new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Queensland overnight, while there are just four known active cases of the virus in the state.

Queensland Health Minister Yvette D'Ath announced the "wonderful news" this morning.

"This is astonishing," she said.

Ms D'Ath thanked Queenslanders for high testing numbers and further urged them to get vaccinated.

Just over 73 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated against the virus, while 84.35 per cent have had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

NSW edges closer to 92 per cent fully vaccinated

New South Wales is on the cusp of boasting a 92 per cent full vaccination rate as the country works towards a full reopening.

Currently the state's double dose rate is at 91.8 per cent, while the first-dose rate in eligible residents now sits at 94.4 per cent.

In the 24 hours to 8pm last night, NSW recorded 176 new COVID-19 cases from 55,330 tests.

There are currently 192 people in hospital, 32 of whom are in intensive care units.

Tragically two more people died as a result of COVID-19 overnight.

The ACT records 16 new cases

The Australian Capital Territory recorded 16 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours up until 8pm yesterday, taking the territory's total number of active cases to 177.

There are five people in hospital with the virus, including two in intensive care and one on a ventilator.

The new infections come as 97 per cent of the territory's population aged 12 and over have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
