As of July 06, 2021, thirty-nine residents at Her Majesty’s Prison and two members of
staff have now fully recovered from the COVID-19 virus.

They were given the all-clear by health officials after having two negative tests recently. Currently, there are 16 residents and 10 members of staff who are still considered active cases. They are all in a stable condition at this time. Members of staff and residents at the Prison Farm in Nevis we’re tested over the weekend and their results all returned negative.

Following an outbreak of the virus in the Prison in St. Kitts in June, the management team moved quickly to put several measures in place to protect the health of residents and staff members who were not affected.

The measures proved effective in drastically slowing the spread of the virus among the residents.

Commissioner of Corrections Terrane James and his
team divided the cell block down the middle with a partition and put affected residents in isolation on one side. To facilitate full recovery, those who test positive are given additional supplements, encouraged to exercise, in addition to being taken out for fresh air and sunlight.

They are also visited regularly by the Prison doctor. Cells were sanitised to allow for recovered residents to move out of the isolation area.

Last week, the Prison acquired protective personal equipment (PPE) with the assistance of the Ministry of Health to further prevent the spread of the virus.

Commissioner of Corrections James continues to work closely with Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hazel Laws and the Chairman of the National COVID-19 Task Force, Abdias Samuel, to monitor the situation at HMP and
to address any issues that might arise. He thanked his staff for their commitment to the job.

Commissioner of Corrections James said that personnel and residents are still being encouraged
to get vaccinated. To date, just over 70 percent of staff and approximately 50 percent of residents have been vaccinated.

Prime Minister of St. Lucia Allen Chastanet has announced that the electorate of that country will vote in a General Election on July 26, 2021.

The prime minister addressed the Nation Monday making the announcement of Nomination Day on July 16.

“I close tonight by announcing that the general elections will be held on July 26, 2021, and that the nomination day will be July 16, 2021.

He said both aisles of the political divide agreed to conduct the campaign adhering to COVID-19 protocols.

“During the campaign, let us treat each other with respect and kindness. I urge all of you to stay safe, to stay strong and to stay united. May God bless and keep you all and may he preserve our beloved Saint Lucia,” he declared

The first Prime Minister of  Dominica, Patrick Roland John passed Tuesday according to reports in that country.

Dominica News Online reported that John died at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital Tuesday morning.

As premier of Dominica, he led the country to independence from the United Kingdom in 1978 becoming the republica first prime minister.

Current PM of Dominica Roosevelt Skerritt was among the first to pour tribute to the late John.

“It is with sadness that I have learnt of the passing of our first Prime Minister, Patrick Roland John, better known as P.J and I therefore wish on behalf of the government and the people of Dominica, on my behalf and my family to extend our sincere condolences to his wife and his children on their loss,” he said.

Merritt said, “One can say whatever they want about Patrick John, but we cannot erase the fact that he made a tremendous contribution to Dominica’s development.”

He said the state will be responsible for the late prime minister’s burial
