Car 'almost cut in half' in Adelaide crash

Two teenagers are in hospital after a car crash following an alleged attempted robbery in Adelaide.

The accident took place in the city's inner west just before 7.30am on Sunday.

Two 19-year-olds allegedly tried to steal a woman's scooter, before driving away.

They allegedly rammed another woman's car as she tried to stop the escape.

"My scooter was stolen, we happened to find it," the alleged victim said.

The two men made it a kilometre down the road before crashing.

The impact was so severe the car was "almost cut in half", police said.

The two men were treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The investigation is continuing.

Accused ISIS recruiter arrested at Melbourne airport

A man wanted for suspected terrorism offences has been arrested in Melbourne upon his return to Australia.

Mohamed Zuhbi arrived at Melbourne airport yesterday about 4pm after being deported by Turkey where he had served an 18-month prison sentence for joining Islamic State and other related crimes.

Authorities allege the 30-year old travelled from Turkey to Syria, where he allegedly facilitated the travel of foreign terrorist fighters to support Islamic State (IS).

Mr Zuhbi is facing multiple terrorism charges, including one count of knowingly giving support and resources to a terrorist organisation, and one count of engaging in a hostile activity in a foreign state.

The former Sydney man is also facing three counts of providing support for another person to engage in a hostile activity in a foreign state.

Mr Zuhbi is currently undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a Victorian corrections facility before he is extradited to New South Wales.

His arrest comes after an ongoing operation by the Australian Federal Police, NSW Police Force (NSWPF), the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, and the NSW Crime Commission, following an investigation into the man's alleged travel from Sydney to Turkey in 2013.

Mr Zuhbi appeared before Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning via video link.

AFP Commander of Counter-Terrorism Operations Stephen Dametto said the return of the 30-year-old demonstrates Australian authorities will continue working with overseas counterparts to manage terrorist threats.

"Anyone who fights with, provides material support to, or associates with terrorist groups, is committing a serious crime and will be subject to the law," Commander Dametto said.

At its height, the Islamic State controlled significant areas of Syria and governed the lives of up to 12 million people.

IS remains a declared terrorist group in Australia and overseas.

Sydney's COVID-19 restrictions extended

Sydney's snap COVID-19 restrictions introduced on Thursday have been extended for another week, with one significant change to mask rules.

The extension comes despite New South Wales recording no new local cases again overnight.

Health authorities remain concerned about how an eastern Sydney couple in their 50s acquired their infections, as contact tracers fail to find a link with the genomically-linked US case who entered hotel quarantine in Sydney on April 26.

"Despite extensive investigations to date, NSW Health has not identified how the initial case, the man in his 50s, was exposed to COVID-19, which suggests he acquired the infection through brief contact with a currently unidentified person who was infectious in the community," NSW Health wrote in a statement.

Restrictions around mandatory masks, a limit of 20 people gathering inside homes, and visits to aged care facilities are now scheduled to end at 12.01am on Monday, May 17.

Singing and dancing are also banned indoors, with the exception of weddings, and pub-goers must remain seated while drinking.

The extended rules apply across Greater Sydney, the Central Coast, the Illawarra, and the Blue Mountains.

However, rules around mask use have been eased slightly, with masks no longer compulsory for customers shopping at retail stores.

Commuters wearing masks disembark from the light rail at Central Station in Sydney.

Masks continue to be mandated for retail staff in public-facing roles.

There were six new cases of coronavirus found in the state's quarantine hotels in the past 24 hours.

The results come from just over 18,000 tests – down from over 22,000 the day before.

The rule tweaks come after a new health alert was issued yesterday for a Woolworths in Sydney's eastern suburbs after the store was visited by a positive case.

Anyone who was at the Woolworths supermarket on the corner of Kiaora Lane and Kiaora Road in Double Bay last Monday, May 3, between 10.45am and 11am has been deemed a casual contact.

They must get tested for coronavirus immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result.
