Life Imitates Art: Domestic Extremists Plotted to Disrupt U.S. Power Grid–As In the Film ‘Die Hard 4’

Domestic violent extremists have been planning to try to disrupt the U.S. power grid and will probably keep doing so, according to a Department of Homeland Security intelligence bulletin shared with law enforcement agencies and utility operators Monday and obtained by CBS News. The scenario is  similar to that of the Bruce Willis Film, Die Hard 4.”DVEs have developed credible, specific plans to attack electricity infrastructure since at least 2020, identifying the electric grid as a particularly attractive target given its interdependency with other infrastructure sectors,” the bulletin reads.

It warns that extremists “adhering to a range of ideologies will likely continue to plot and encourage physical attacks against electrical infrastructure.”

Still, the bulletin notes that, “Absent significant technical knowledge or insider assistance, small scale attacks are unlikely to cause widespread, multi-state power loss but may result in physical damage that poses risks to operations or personnel.”

When asked for comment, a DHS spokesperson said to CBS News, “The Department of Homeland Security regularly shares information with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and private sector partners to ensure the safety and security of all communities across the country.”

Word of the bulletin was first reported by The Daily Beast.

Another DHS bulletin, issued Sunday and obtained by CBS News, warns that Russia “would consider” launching a cyberattack against the U.S. “if it perceived (that) a U.S. or NATO response to a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine threatened its long-term national security.”

Transmission lines and substations have been fixtures of extremist-aligned online forums.

The Monday bulletin goes on to point out that, since 2019, potential racially or ethnically-motivated violent extremists have explored attacking power stations in the Southeast if they disagreed with the outcome of the November 2020 election.

In October 2020, the Department of Justice charged four suspected racially-motivated domestic violent extremists who “believed in the superiority of the white race and discussed accelerationist objectives”  with conspiracy to damage transformers in Idaho and surrounding states. The federal indictment alleged that a handwritten list of transformers, substations, and other components of the power grid in the Northwest were discovered among a defendant’s possessions by federal law enforcement.

The U.S. electric grid contains approximately 7,700 power plants, 3,300 utilities, and over 2.7 million miles of power lines, according to the Council on Foreign relations. Yet it functions as three separate U.S. grids, or “self-contained interconnections of power production and transmission” that include Eastern, Western, and Texas interconnections.

Power grid failures during a February 2021 winter storm demonstrated the devastating impact of widespread outages, ultimately killing dozens of Texans.

Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation has Pledged $15 million to Climate Justice Groups

Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation has pledged to donate $15 million to organizations that are fighting for climate justice in the United States and the Caribbean. The pledge was made in partnership with Jack Dorsey’s #StartSmall initiative.

The groups that will be receiving grants “are focused on and led by women, youth, Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and people of color to accelerate climate justice for those at greatest risk,” a press release said.

“At the Clara Lionel Foundation, much of the work is rooted in the understanding that climate disasters, which are growing in frequency and intensity, do not impact all communities equally, with communities of color and island nations facing the brunt of climate change. This is why CLF prioritizes both climate resilience and climate justice work across the U.S. and Caribbean,” Rihanna, who was born in Barbados, said.

Justine Lucas, the Executive Director of the Clara Lionel Foundation, also commented on the pledge, writing, “CLF believes strongly that funders must build partnerships with organizations and acknowledge their deep understanding of what is necessary to achieve climate justice in their own communities.”

The organizations that have been approved for grants from the Clara Lionel Foundation are the Black Feminist Fund, Black Visions Collective, Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN), Center for Popular Democracy (CPD), Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund, Climate Justice Alliance, Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, GirlsCARE, Helen’s Daughters, HEY Campaign (The Ashley Lashley Foundation), Hive Fund for Gender and Climate Justice, Indigenous Environmental Network, Integrated Health Outreach, Movement for Black Lives (M4BL), Native Movement, NDN Collective, The Caribbean Climate Justice Project, and The Solutions Project.

Back in November of last year, Rihanna was declared a National Hero of Barbados. “Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty has given service to Barbados which has been exemplified by visionary and pioneering leadership, extraordinary achievement, and the attainment of the highest excellence that is redounded to the honor of Barbados,” Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley said at a ceremony celebrating the island nation cutting ties from the British monarchy and becoming a republic.

Mexicans Protest Journalist Killings, Call for Protection

MEXICO CITY, Jan 25 (Reuters) – Mexican journalists on Tuesday started nationwide protests to denounce the recent murders of three reporters, demanding an end to impunity that has often characterized the killings of their colleagues.

The protests follow the murder of seasoned journalist Lourdes Maldonado on Sunday, some three years after she raised the issue of killings with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and said she feared for her life. read more

Protesters in the central state of Puebla laid flowers and candles on the street along with signs that read “I’m angry at censorship”, television footage showed, while in the northern state of Chihuahua protesters scrawled on a wall “Journalism is a risk” and drew the face of Maldonado.

Israel Ibarra, president at a Baja California communications college, said if government and society failed to act they would be “complicit” not only in the murders of Maldonado and others but “the murder of freedom of expression in Mexico”.

Mexico is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists, and some 145 have been killed between 2000-2021, according to Article 19, an advocacy group.

Mexican journalist networks voted to stage the gatherings, which will coincide with online protest campaigns.

“It is matter of urgency that state and federal authorities prevent attacks, protect journalists when they are victims, and investigate crimes committed against the press with due diligence,” Article 19 said in a statement.

Maldonado’s murder in the northern border city of Tijuana, where she worked for many years, followed the killings of two other Mexican journalists this month.

Lopez Obrador, who has been criticized for not doing more to protect reporters, said his government would investigate and “clear up this crime to prevent further murders of journalists”.

Critics say Lopez Obrador has failed to deliver on pledges to reduce violence, combat deeply entrenched organized crime, or reduce impunity. The president says crime and violence are the products of chronic corruption and inequality.

Egan Bernal: Ineos Grenadiers Rider in Intensive Care after Spinal Surgery

BBC- Egan Bernal is in intensive care after undergoing two operations following a crash in his native Colombia.

The 25-year-old had spinal surgery and other procedures after he sustained back, leg, knee and chest injuries.

The Ineos Grenadiers rider, who won the 2019 Tour de France, crashed at high speed.

The team said: “Egan remains in a stable condition after two successful surgeries.”

The statement added: “Egan suffered a fractured vertebrae, a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella [knee-cap], chest trauma, a punctured lung and several fractured ribs in the crash.

“Doctors were able to medically pin his right leg and stabilise the vertebrae. He is now in intensive care where other potential injuries are being managed, as well as the body’s response to the trauma.”

A separate statement from the hospital in Bogota said they “will wait for his progress over the next 72 hours”.

Last year’s Giro d’Italia winner – who recently extended his contract with Ineos Grenadiers to 2026 – was widely expected to contest the Tour de France this year.

It is not yet clear if he will be able to take part in the Tour – which begins in Copenhagen on 1 July – or be ruled out for the whole season.

Bernal won his maiden Tour title two years ago after Chris Froome, the four-time champion and team leader, suffered multiple injuries in a crash during a warm-up race.

Froome, who is still searching for the form he had before his crash – after switching from Ineos to Israel Premier Tech in 2021 – said his “thoughts are with Egan and his family”.

The crash comes just weeks after Dutch rider Amy Pieters suffered serious head injuries in an accident in Spain.

Bernal’s British Ineos team-mate Tao Geoghegan Hart said Bernal’s crash was “a sad reminder of how dangerous training can be”.

IMF Urges El Salvador to Remove Bitcoin as Legal Tender

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged El Salvador to reverse its decision to make Bitcoin legal tender.

In September, El Salvador became the first country to allow consumers to use the cryptocurrency in all transactions, alongside the US dollar.

The decision led to large-scale protests over fears it would bring instability and inflation to the impoverished Latin American country.

Bitcoin has lost about half its value since November.

The IMF has warned President Nayib Bukele of the risks the cryptocurrency poses to the country, stressing that it would be difficult to get a loan from the institution.

The board’s directors have now “urged the authorities to narrow the scope of the Bitcoin law by removing Bitcoin’s legal tender status”, according to a statement.

They highlighted the “large risks associated with the use of Bitcoin on financial stability, financial integrity and consumer protection” and with issuing Bitcoin-backed bonds.

When El Salvador introduced the virtual currency as a legal tender, the government released a new digital wallet app, giving away $30 (£22) in Bitcoin to every citizen. More than 200 new cash machines were also installed across the country.

It presented the measure as a way to boost economic development and jobs, but El Salvador has been divided by the move.

It means that businesses, wherever possible, are now obliged to accept the digital coins as payment.

Bitcoin is a controversial currency in part because its value can fluctuate significantly – it has risen and fallen dramatically over the past year.

Bitcoin was trading at about $37,000 on Tuesday, having lost about half its value compared to the record of $67,734 hit in November.

President Bukele announced in November plans to build a Bitcoin city at the base of a volcano in El Salvador, with the cryptocurrency used to fund the project.

Dozens Fared Lost as ‘Smuggling’ Boat Capsizes Off Florida

US Coast Guard officials are searching for 39 people who are feared missing after their boat capsized on Saturday night off the Florida coast.

Officials were alerted on Tuesday morning after fishermen spotted a man clinging to the hull of a boat 45 miles (72km) from the city of Fort Pierce.

The survivor said the group had embarked from Bimini, Bahamas, on Saturday night and hit foul weather. US officials say the boat may have been part of a “human smuggling venture”.

According to the survivor, who has not been identified, none of the passengers were wearing life vests.

The search was being led by the Miami Coast Guard sector using ships and aircrafts, the agency said on Twitter.

By Tuesday afternoon, no further survivors had been found.

The island of Bimini is the western-most district of the Bahamas, and is only 80 miles from Miami.

Officials are searching from Bimini to Fort Pierce, an area roughly 135 miles wide.

Incidents with vessels crowded with people are not uncommon in the waters off Florida. Many of the cases involve migrants from Cuba and Haiti trying to reach the US.

On Friday, the Coast Guard reported that they had found 88 Haitians in an overloaded ship west of the Bahamas.

“Navigating the Florida Straits, Windward and Mona Passages in overloaded and less than seaworthy passages is extremely dangerous and can result in loss of life,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

“The Coast Guard and our partner agencies will continue to stop these voyages. You will be interdicted and should expect to be returned and repatriated to your country of origin.”

UK: Johnson Under Threat as MPs See Official Report Triggering Police Probe into Partying at No. 10

Police officer outside Downing Street

Boris Johnson is braced for the most perilous 48 hours of his premiership, with exasperated Conservative MPs due to see an official report into Downing Street parties that has now triggered a criminal inquiry.

The Metropolitan police commissioner, Cressida Dick, announced on Tuesday that her officers are investigating allegations of law-breaking at the heart of government on the basis of evidence unearthed during an inquiry by the senior civil servant Sue Gray.

In what appeared to be a hint about what Gray has discovered, Dick said: “I don’t anticipate any difficulty in obtaining the evidence that it is … necessary, proportionate and appropriate for us to obtain in order to get to the right conclusions”. Those found to have breached regulations could be fined.

Former No 10 staffers told the Guardian that the police inquiry will uncover evidence which has not yet been submitted to Gray. One senior Tory said the Scotland Yard inquiry was a “different ballgame”, adding: “Officials who don’t tell Sue Gray the whole truth will not hold back from the cops.”

Downing Street sources refused to be drawn tonight on whether the prime minister could give the green light for the report to be released as soon as Wednesday, but it is certainly expected within days.

A senior government source cautioned it was unlikely to be published in full, saying: “You don’t need to be a lawyer to realise that if there’s an ongoing police investigation, there are constraints on what you can publish.”

Gray has interviewed witnesses and examined key evidence including security logs showing who was in Downing Street and when. She is also thought to have been shown photographs of parties though Cabinet Office sources stressed these were unlikely to be included in the report.

It is understood the Met’s decision to investigate a number of parties in Downing Street and Whitehall was made on Sunday. Johnson had been informed in advance but opted not to tell his cabinet at their weekly meeting on Tuesday, leaving them to find out as they emerged and triggering consternation.

Asked why cabinet ministers were not told, the prime minister’s spokesperson said: “From what I understand it’s important not to pre-empt a police statement on this sort of issue at any point.”

Many Tory MPs are awaiting Gray’s findings before deciding whether to add their names to those calling on the 1922 Committee chair, Graham Brady, to trigger a vote of no confidence. One senior MP suggested Tory backbenchers would be likely to come to a “collective decision” when they see how Johnson responds.

“Those colleagues that still have a foot in the real world will recognise that there is no world in which a police investigation is anything but very bad,” they said, adding that in any normal workplace those under investigation would be suspended rather than coming to work as normal.

A former cabinet minister suggested Brady may already have received 40 letters. The threshold for triggering a confidence vote is 54. If it is reached, a vote would be held within days, and if Johnson lost it, his premiership would effectively be over.

His press secretary insisted last week that Johnson would be determined to fight any vote of no confidence, rather than resign. The prime minister continued to adopt a defiant stance on Tuesday, briefing MPs on the crisis in Ukraine and entertaining wavering colleagues at No 10.

“I welcome the Met’s decision to conduct its own investigation because I believe this will help to give the public the clarity it needs and help to draw a line under matters,” he told the House of Commons.

His spokesman, asked whether Johnson believed he had broken the law, said: “It’s fair to say he does not.”

At cabinet, Johnson hailed the benefits of Brexit and urged his colleagues to be “bold” and “go further and faster in driving forward the government’s reform agenda”.

One backbencher said Johnson’s team “have been working hard” in winning over MPs tempted to call for his removal, saying they had been trying to “charm” backbenchers.

Another pointed to an “atmosphere of intimidation”, however, after a series of reports in recent days about the heavy-handed tactics of Johnson’s whips and other close allies.

On a day of twists and turns at Westminster, it initially appeared the Met’s inquiry would delay publication of Gray’s report.

Johnson’s spokesman subsequently suggested just those aspects of the report unrelated to the parties being investigated by the police could be released. “My understanding is that she can publish those elements that are not subject to further work,” he said.

But it later emerged the Met had no objections to the report’s publication.

Tory MPs lined up to defend the prime minister during an urgent question on the investigation by Labour’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner. The Conservative MP Giles Watling described the urgent question as a “vexatious waste of everybody’s time” but was forced to withdraw his claims by the Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who decides urgent questions.

Sir Edward Leigh said: “When Europe stands on the brink of war and there is a cost of living crisis can we please have a sense of proportion over the prime minister being given a piece of cake in his own office by his own staff.”

The Liberal Democrat leader, Ed Davey, said later: “A sitting prime minister is under police investigation. If he had a scrap of shame, he’d resign. He thinks he’s above the law – but he’s not. And it’s time for him to go.”

On Monday ITV News reported that up to 30 staff gathered in the Downing Street cabinet room in June 2020 with a cake and picnic food from Marks & Spencer to sing Happy Birthday to the prime minister and give him birthday cake. The event, which No 10 has denied was a party, was said to have been organised by his wife, Carrie, and briefly attended by the interior designer Lulu Lytle.

Seeking to defend Johnson against that allegation on Tuesday evening, one of his close confidants, Northern Ireland minister Conor Burns, claimed the prime minister had been “in a sense, ambushed with a cake”.

Nevis Min. of Health to Host Annual Cervical Cancer Awareness Outreach Event

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS — The Community Nursing Services in the Ministry of Health on Nevis is appealing to those who have never had a pap smear done to do so at the 5th annual Cervical Cancer Awareness outreach event at all heath centres on Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Ms. Shevanee Nisbett, Senior Health Educator, while speaking of the planned event on January 25, 2022, noted that it forms part of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month which is observed during the month of January.

“We are encouraging persons to get screened for cervical cancer and this takes place in the form of a pap smear, and we are encouraging persons to take part in our screening… This year we are encouraging those who’ve never had a pap smear done and especially those younger persons. We are targeting the younger population to get a pap smear.

“There are some persons who are of the notion that if you don’t have a child or if you are not as sexually active as you think you should be to get a pap smear, that you don’t need to get a pap smear, but we’re encouraging persons who’ve never had a pap smear before. Even if you consider yourself an older person and you’ve never had a pap smear before, we are asking that you come and get your pap smears done,” she said, adding that persons who get their tests done every year are also welcome.

According to Ms. Nisbett, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer once it is detected early and managed effectively and up to three percent of cervical cancers are preventable through screening.

She described the cervix as the narrow part of the uterus which connects the main body of the uterus to the vagina and in order to try to prevent cervical cancer, health officials on Nevis always encourage females to get their pap smears done.

Ms. Nisbett reminded the public that outside of the annual outreach programme, pap smears are available free of cost at health centres across the island throughout the year.

“We offer pap smears at the clinics all week, every week and we have a particular schedule:

“So at Brown Hill Health Centre we offer pap smears on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.; the Gingerland Health Centre on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.; the Butlers Health Centre on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; the Combermere Health Centre on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; the Cotton Ground Health Centre on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and at Charlestown Health Centre on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.,” she said.

Persons who plan to have a pap smear done should avoid having sexual intercourse 72 hours or at least three days before; avoid douching or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for 24 hours before having a pap smear; and should not schedule a pap smear during a menstrual period. Instead, the test should be scheduled one week on completion of a menstrual period.

The Senior Health Educator also referred to the success of the outreach programme so far.

“The screening has been quite successful over the past few years. We started in 2017 and every year since then, we have had an increase in the number of persons that come to get screened. We did have a dip in 2020, and of course this is because of COVID-19 but it increased again in 2021. So we are asking that it increase some more this year that we have more persons come out to get screened.

“Even though you might have little rumours saying it’s uncomfortable and all of that, this is something that you should get done. It is not as uncomfortable as you think and it’s over in less than two minutes. It’s important to get it done and this is something we can do to save a life. So we encourage everybody to get screened for cervical cancer,” she said.
