Five Trinidadians Held as Suspects in the Carriacou Bank Robbery

by Melissa Wong

The Royal Grenada Police Force has made a breakthrough in the daring daylight robbery on Carriacou with the capture of five suspects.

Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Kindra Maturine-Stewart, says she applauds law enforcement and security forces on the island whose swift action today ensured that five foreign nationals implicated in the robbing of a bank in their peaceful community were captured.

She said,“My office has been informed that men identified as all Trinidadian nationals were captured at sea during their attempted get away from the island after robbing the Carriacou branch of the Grenada Co-operative Bank located at Hillsborough, Carriacou.”

The minister says the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are heartened by the swift and efficient action of the local police and coast guard which reflects the improved local security capacity on the island.

She notes in recent years, the government invested great resources in personnel and equipment in our ongoing efforts at improved security.

Despite that fact, we are determined to review even further some of the local security operations since this is the second time within two years that our very peaceful community has been jolted by what is effectively a cross border raid by regional criminal elements.”

The minister adds: “We are thankful that none of our citizens were hurt during today’s dramatic development, though witnesses would have had some trauma since it is unusual in one of the most serene and peaceful jurisdictions in this hemisphere.”

Team Unity Government continues to encourage more homeownership

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, October 18, 2021 (MMS-SKN) — To encourage more homeownership the Team Unity Government has made arrangements for private individuals to develop lands to build residential properties. In this regard private developers will soon be building homes in Cayon, Tabernacle, and Sandy Point.

This follows recent efforts of the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla Trading and Development Company (TDC) to build out Dewar’s Housing Project, and the St. Kitts Co-operative Credit Union is also slated to start a housing programme this week.

“We have made provision for ordinary people who could buy a one acre plot of land or more to come forward, build homes and sell them so that the burden of housing does not rest entirely with the government,” announced Prime Minister and Minister Finance, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris.

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, who is also the Area Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Seven, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, addressing the PLP Constituency Number Seven Branch meeting.

The Honourable Prime Minister, who is also the Area Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Seven (Bellevue to Ottley’s), made the announcement on Saturday October 16 at Bourryeau when he addressed a meeting hosted by the Peoples Labour Party (PLP) Constituency Number Seven Branch.

Dr Harris is the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party, one of the three parties in the ruling Team Unity Administration. The other parties are the People’s Action Movement (PAM), and the Nevis-based Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM).

“The truth is the government cannot provide everybody with a home and so we have provided a variety of housing arrangements for civil servants,” said Prime Minister Harris. “They can go to the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, get a loan at the lowest mortgage rate, or close to, in an easy way.”

Government, the Honourable Prime Minister added, has continued arrangements for persons, any citizens who are building their first home to go to the Ministry of Finance, and make an application to get exemption from duty on all the building materials.

The programme, known as the First Home Mortgage Programme, is open to any qualifying citizen who would therefore benefit by acquiring building materials free of duty. Noted Dr Harris: “That therefore will bring you significant savings. We are doing what we must do to help you and to help our country advance.”

Additionally Prime Minister Harris said that government is contemplating allocating out 15 homes in Mansion Village shortly. These were part of a promise support from Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to support housing programmes after hurricanes of 2017.

To further increase the country’s housing stock, before the year end another housing project will commence in Cunningham, Cayon, with 45 homes in the first instance. He noted that it would be followed by another 45 homes in Constituency Number Seven, and in Sandy Point, advising that these projects will be undertaken by a private developer.

PM Harris thanks constituents and the PLP for keeping Constituency #7 going strong

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, October 18, 2021 (MMS-SKN) — Area Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Seven (Bellevue to Ottley’s), Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, is thanking his constituents for having kept the constituency going strong since November 1993 when he was first elected to parliament.

“I am happy all of you in your own ways have been there, have done a tremendous job and have kept the constituency going strong so that in 2020, we delivered one of the strongest victories that we have had over last 28 years in the seven elections that we have contested,” said Dr Harris, who is also the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP) which is one of the three political parties in the ruling Team Unity Administration.

Peoples Labour Party National Deputy Treasurer Mrs Patrice Ofre delivering the vote of thanks at the end of PLP Constituency Number Seven Executive Branch meeting held in Bourryeau.

Dr Harris make the remarks on Saturday October 16 when he addressed the Peoples Labour Party Constituency Number Seven Branch, at a meeting which was held in Bourryeau, in his capacity as the Area Parliamentary Representative. He thanked all of them for being there from the very beginning of the political engagement and for still continuing to be there.

“My job is to serve you and to serve the country to the best of my ability and I shall continue to do so,” assured Dr Harris. “Our job is to prepare the party, and enhance the national strategy of the Peoples Labour Party. And with your help and your discipline we can do it.”

The Prime Minister reminded them that the Peoples Labour Party showed its strength as the newest political party when persons said they couldn’t do it, they could not impact – they could not win. He observed: “We showed them yes we can. We did it in 2015, we did it again in 2020 and we shall deliver again. We are more united than any, and we in Unity have the best leadership at this particular time to take our country to the stronger and safer future.”

The meeting was chaired by Chairman of the Peoples Labour Party Constituency Number Seven Branch, Mr Lenworth Harris. It was attended by members of the National Executive including National Chairman Mr Warren Thompson, National Secretary Ms Myrtilla Williams, and National Treasurer Mr Rawle Mars.

Others were National Women Representative Mrs Sonia Henry, National Youth Representative Mr Jeremiah Locker, Deputy National Treasurer Mrs Patrice Ofre, National Director of Communications Mr Craig Tuckett, and Founding Member Mr William Phillip.

According to Dr Harris, the Peoples Labour Party has membership in every constituency on St. Kitts, and they continue to work, to strengthen Team Unity everywhere. He observed that leading up to the 2020 general elections the opposition was saying that Team Unity, which he is the leader, was going to be a one-term government. They however won a second term with an increased margin.

“Now they are afraid of a third term for Team Unity,” remarked the Honourable Prime Minister. “You see how far we have come? We couldn’t do it (they said), and when we did it they said ‘well it was a fluke so it is one term’, and now they are bawling whether or not there will be a third term for Team Unity. Tell them that is left to the people of the country.”

The Prime Minister said that he will not engage them as right now the country needs his focused attention. He added that right now the people need competent hands and capable people who are willing to do the work that will take the country forward. It is not a time for partisan bickering when the country faces a global threat in Covid-19.

“For me I will not answer them yet is because right now I am focused on doing what must be done to deliver the country out of the pandemic and to deliver the stronger and safer future,” said Dr Harris. “The underminers can’t call me and give me notes about how to run the government. I have been guided by our vision, and I run the country with my colleagues with blessings, the advice, and the wisdom that God have given to me. Tell them the country is running good, and Team Unity is here to stay.”

He asked them to stay focused and not allow the distraction to get to them. In appealing to them to stay focused, he noted that there will be good times and bad and rough times, but in all those they still need a calm head, and they should not take on what the opposition says.

“The government is not about show – the government is about finding able, capable citizens and residents who can go the long haul,” said the Honourable Prime Minister. “The government is about leadership that matters – leadership that will go beyond the call of duty.”

Four Men Face Charges for Smuggling 43 Haitians into Mona Island, Puerto Rico

Smuggling 43 Haitians into Mona Island, Puerto Rico

Border Patrol warns of the dangers and consequences of irregular migration

AGUADILLA, Puerto Rico –Four men from the Dominican Republic appeared this week before the US District Court in San Juan facing criminal charges after the US Border Patrol agents arrested them for transporting 43 Haitian migrants into Mona Island.

The Ramey Sector of the US Border Patrol issued a warning today into the dangers of crossing the Mona Passage and leaving migrants in the inhospitable island of Mona.

“We will continue to pursue criminal prosecution for anyone smuggling non-citizens into the United States,” stated Xavier Morales, Chief Patrol Agent at the Ramey Sector. “Bringing non-citizens into Mona Island is a serious crime and puts lives at risk. We will bring the smugglers to justice.”

By narrowing immigration channels, more people seek the help of smugglers, who endanger the lives and integrity of migrants in their increasingly risky efforts to bypass border controls.

Carlos Javier Lopez, Josue Elias Robles, Jonathan Garcia and Mauricio Sosa Belen appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judges Marcos E. Lopez and Marshal D. Morgan for their initial hearings. They are charged with violating Title 8, United States Code, Section 1324, for bringing in and harboring migrants.

A US Coast Guard cutter transported the group to the Mayaguez Port where Border Patrol took custody of the group for processing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Evelyn Canals is prosecuting the cases.

If convicted, the defendants face up to 20 years’ imprisonment, or a fine of up to $250,000, or both.

All defendants are innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

US Condemns Cuba’s Prohibition of Peaceful Protests

The Joe Biden administration has strongly condemned what it said was the Cuban Government’s decision to deny permission for peaceful protests to take place on November 15.
“By refusing to allow these demonstrations, the Cuban regime clearly demonstrates that it is unwilling to honour or uphold the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Cubans,” said Ned Price, a spokesperson for the US Department of State.
In a statement, Price said the Cuban Government’s denial comes after it announced its intent to position troops on Cuban streets, from November 18-20, “to intimidate Cubans and quash the previously-scheduled, nationwide peaceful protests.
“These latest moves add to the repressive response to the July 11protests that people in Cuba and around the world witnessed,” Price said. “The United States remains deeply committed to the Cuban people, their right to assemble peacefully and express themselves, and their struggle to freely choose their leadership and their future.”
Last month, US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken noted that “starting on July 11, tens of thousands of Cubans in dozens of cities and towns throughout their country took to the streets to peacefully demand respect for their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“In response, Cuban security forces violently repressed the protests, arresting hundreds of demonstrators simply for exercising their rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” Blinken said. “Demonstrators and human rights advocates have since been convicted in summary proceedings that lack fair trial guarantees.  Some have reported physical abuse while in regime custody. Others remain incommunicado or are being held without formal charges.”
The US Secretary of State said it was “vital that the international community speak out against the repression and mass arrests of Cuban protestors; demand the release of those unjustly imprisoned there; and support the Cuban people’s desire to determine their own future.
“We urge the Cuban Government, a member of the UN Human Rights Council, to respect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Cuban people, enshrined in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights,” he said.
“Cubans deserve a chance to exercise their rights and voice their aspirations without fear of violence or imprisonment,” Blinken added. “The United States will continue to support the Cuban people, and will continue to take action to promote accountability for the Cuban Government’s human rights abuses.”
In addressing the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Debate last month, Cuban President Miguel Marion Díaz-Canel Bermúdez denounced the foreign policy of the United States.
Bermúdez charged that Washington was promoting a “dangerous international schism…through the pernicious use and abuse of economic coercive measures”.
According to the Cuban President, the US “pressures countries to speak and act against adversaries, overthrows legitimate governments and breaks trade agreements.
“It is a kind of behaviour associated to ideological and cultural intolerance, with a remarkable racist influence and hegemonic ambition purposes”, he said, adding that the US attacks against Cuba have “exceeded all limits,” referring to the US Government’s maintenance of his country on a list of countries that sponsor terrorism.
He claimed that the US is projecting a false image of Cuba, and has done everything to “erase the Cuban Revolution from the political map to the world”
But Bermúdez said the Spanish-speaking Caribbean country will continue to stand its ground.
“We ratify Cuba’s determination to continue speaking the truth in a
transparent way, however much this might be upsetting to some; defending the principles and values we believe in; supporting just causes; confronting violations as much as we have confronted foreign aggressions, colonialism, racism and apartheid and struggling ceaselessly for the greatest possible justice, prosperity and development of our peoples, who deserve a better world,” he said.
Last week, Biden signed into law the Havana Act that would compensate Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officers, Department of State diplomats and other US federal officials who have sustained mysterious, traumatic neurological injuries that the intelligence community is yet to figure out.
In signing the Act, Biden authorized Blinken and the CIA Director William J. Burns to render financial aid to US government employees who have sustained brain injuries.
The act is named for what has been referred to as “Havana Syndrome,” a series of inexplicable injuries whose victims were first identified five years ago at the United States Embassy in Havana, Cuba.

Colin Powell: Former US Sec. of State Dies of COVID Complications at 84

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, the first Black American to serve in the post, died on Monday at the age of 84 due to complications from COVID-19, his family announced in a statement. The family said the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had been fully vaccinated and was receiving treatment at Walter Reed National Medical Center.

“General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment,” the Powell family said in a statement posted to Facebook.

“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American,” the family added.

Powell, born on April 5, 1937, in Harlem, New York, was raised by Jamaican immigrant parents in the South Bronx.

Following a decorated military career that included tours in Vietnam, Powell held key military and diplomatic positions throughout government, serving under both Democratic and Republican presidents.

Former President George W. Bush, who tapped Powell to serve as his Secretary of State, said he was “deeply saddened” by the military leader’s death.

“Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of Colin Powell. He was a great public servant, starting with his time as a soldier during Vietnam. Many Presidents relied on General Powell’s counsel and experience,” Bush said in a statement.

“He was National Security Adviser under President Reagan, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under my father and President Clinton, and Secretary of State during my Administration. He was such a favorite of Presidents that he earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom – twice. He was highly respected at home and abroad. And most important, Colin was a family man and a friend. Laura and I send Alma and their children our sincere condolences as they remember the life of a great man,” he added.

Powell first joined the Reagan administration in 1987 as national security adviser, becoming the first Black individual to serve in the role.

He later transitioned to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989, a position he held for four years serving under former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Calls for Powell to wage a presidential bid ramped up ahead of the 1996 election following the U.S.-led coalition’s win in the Gulf War. The military figure ultimately passed on a campaign of his own, concluding that he did not have a “passion” for elected politics.

“Such a life requires a calling that I do not yet hear,” Powell told reporters in 1995. “And for me to pretend otherwise would not be honest to myself, it would not be honest to the American people.”

The four-star general reentered the political sphere in 2001 when he was tapped by President George W. Bush to serve as Secretary of State, breaking another barrier and becoming the first Black American to serve in the role.

He served in the post until 2005.

Powell led the U.S. on the diplomatic front in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, helping to ramp up support among other countries for the War on Terror and the War in Afghanistan.

The secretary also faced criticism for his push for military intervention in Iraq in 2003.

In a speech before the United Nations in February 2003 Powell showed evidence with U.S. intelligence that he said illustrated that the Iraqi military was misleading inspectors and concealing weapons of mass destruction.

“There can be no doubt that Saddam Hussein has biological weapons and the capability to rapidly produce more, many more,” Powell said in his speech.

Inspectors, however, later said that weapons of mass destruction did not exist in Iraq.

In 2005, two years after Powell’s speech before the U.N., a government report concluded that the intelligence community was “dead wrong” in its claim that Iraq was holding weapons of mass destruction prior to the U.S.’s invasion.

Powell later said his speech before the U.N. was a “blot” in his record and recognized that it would be a part of his legacy, adding that he regretted delivering the remarks.

“I regret it now because the information was wrong — of course I do,” Powell told CNN’s Larry King in November 2010. “But I will always be seen as the one who made the case before the international community.”

“I swayed public opinion, there’s no question about it,” he added.

In his memoir “It Worked for Me,” published in 2012, Powell again discussed the speech, writing that “the event will earn a prominent paragraph in my obituary,” according to CNN.

Powell studied at the City College of New York, where he was a participant in ROTC.

After graduating in 1958 Powell joined the U.S. Army and deployed to South Vietnam twice in the 1960s, where he was wounded twice.

Powell waded into the political arena during the Trump era, announcing after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol that he no longer considered himself a Republican.

Asked by CNN’s Fareed Zakaria if he believes “fellow Republicans” who have not criticized former President Trump “encouraged, at least, this wildness to grow and grow,” Powell said “they did, and that’s why I can no longer call myself a Republican.”

“I’m not a fellow of anything right now. I’m just a citizen who has voted Republican, voted Democrat throughout my entire career, and right now I’m just watching my country and not concerned with parties,” he said.

“I do not know how he was able to attract all of these people. They should have known better, but they were so taken by their political standing and how none of them wanted to put themselves at political risk. They would not stand up and tell the truth or stand up and criticize him, or criticize others,” he added.

Powell endorsed then-candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

UK: Jamaican Artist Basil Watson Chosen to Design Nat. Windrush Monument

BBC- Renowned Jamaican sculptor and painter, Basil Watson has been chosen to design the United Kingdom’s National Windrush Monument, which will stand at London Waterloo station. He was selected from a group of four artists, all of whom are of Caribbean heritage.

The monument, which is backed by £1 million of government funding, will pay tribute to the Windrush generation of Caribbean migrants, who arrived in Britain after the Second World War and the generations that followed over the years.

The UK government says the monument delivers on a manifesto commitment that aligns with the nation’s Black History Month celebrations. It is expected to be unveiled on Windrush Day 2022, on June 22.

UK Communities Minister Kemi Badenoch MP, congratulated Watson on being selected, saying the government was very pleased to sponsor the monument.

“His design will celebrate and honour the contribution of the Windrush generation, right at the centre of our nation’s capital. The Monument will become a permanent place of reflection and inspiration for all, reminding us of our shared history and heritage,” he said.

Basil Watson has designed public sculptures and monuments across the world including statues of Martin Luther King Jr, Usain Bolt and Merlene Ottey. This will be his first public artwork in the United Kingdom, where he lived for part of his childhood with his family, who are part of the Windrush generation.

He said that he was honored to be chosen to design the monument.

“I feel privileged that I now have this opportunity to express the aspirations, vision and courage of my parents, who took the long sea voyage to England in 1952 as part of that Windrush generation in search of a brighter future. I look forward to bringing my design to life, because I know how much this means to the Windrush community,” Watson said.

Basil, who was awarded the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) in 2016 by the Jamaican government in recognition of his artistic accomplishment, will now begin work to convert his maquette into the 12-foot-high bronze monument.

Iranian Supertanker Departing from Venezuela with Heavy oil

HOUSTON/CARACAS, Oct 16 (Reuters) – An Iran-flagged supertanker on Saturday was about to set sail from Venezuelan waters carrying 2 million barrels of heavy crude provided by state-run oil firm PDVSA (PDVSA.UL), according to documents seen by Reuters and vessel tracking services.

The shipment is part of a deal agreed by PDVSA and its counterpart National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) that exchanges Iranian condensate for Venezuela’s Merey crude. The swaps aim to ease an acute shortage of diluents that has cut Venezuela’s oil output and exports, Reuters reported last month.

Dino I, a very large crude carrier (VLCC) owned and operated by NIOC’s National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), finished loading the Venezuelan oil at PDVSA’s Jose port late Friday, according to the documents, a source and monitoring service TankerTrackers.com.

The bilateral oil trade could be a breach of U.S. sanctions on both countries, the U.S. Treasury Department told Reuters last month, citing government orders that establish the punitive measures.

A Treasury spokesperson on Saturday declined to comment further on the latest development.

The vessel arrived in Venezuela in September with its transponder turned off while carrying 2.1 million barrels of Iranian condensate. The light oil fed PDVSA’s Petrolera Sinovensa, Petropiar and Petrocedeno projects in the country’s Orinoco Belt. read more

A second condensate cargo of similar size is expected to be delivered to Venezuela in the coming weeks as part of the swap routine, which will be in effect for six months in its first phase.

Venezuela’s oil ministry, PDVSA and NIOC did not reply to requests for comment.

PDVSA first launched the exchange last month by sending 1.9 million barrels of Merey heavy crude on the Iran-flagged supertanker Felicity.

The exchange provides the OPEC nation with a stable supply of blending material needed to convert its extra heavy oil into exportable grades. The pact also delivers heavy oil to Iran for blending, refining or marketing to Asian customers.

Iran and Venezuela have strengthened their cooperation in the last year even under the watchful gaze of the United States, which has in recent years reimposed sanctions on Iranian state entities, including NIOC, and in 2019 blacklisted PDVSA.
