A Chinese spacecraft landed on the far side of the moon today to collect soil and rock samples that could provide insights into differences between the less-explored region and the better-known near side.

The landing module touched down at 6.23am (Beijing time) in a huge crater known as the South Pole-Aitken Basin, the China National Space Administration said.

The mission is the sixth in the Chang'e moon exploration program, which is named after a Chinese moon goddess.

It is the second designed to bring back samples, following the Chang'e 5, which did so from the near side in 2020.

The moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the US — still the leader in space exploration — and others, including Japan and India. China has put its own space station in orbit and regularly sends crews there.

The emerging global power aims to put a person on the moon before 2030, which would make it the second nation after the United States to do so.

America is planning to land astronauts on the moon again — for the first time in more than 50 years — though NASA pushed the target date back to 2026 earlier this year.

US efforts to use private sector rockets to launch spacecraft have been repeatedly delayed.

Earlier yesterday, a Japanese billionaire called off his plan to orbit the moon because of uncertainty over the development of a mega rocket by SpaceX.

NASA is planning to use the rocket to send its astronauts to the moon.

In China's current mission, the lander is to use a mechanical arm and a drill to gather up to two kilograms of surface and underground material for about two days.

An ascender atop the lander will then take the samples in a metal vacuum container back to another module that is orbiting the moon.

The container will be transferred to a re-entry capsule that is due to return to Earth in the deserts of China's Inner Mongolia region about June 25.

Missions to the moon's far side are more difficult because it doesn't face the Earth, requiring a relay satellite to maintain communications. The terrain is also more rugged, with fewer flat areas to land.

Former political staffer Brittany Higgins has married her long-term partner David Sharaz on the Gold Coast, surrounded by family and friends.

Higgins, who has fought to change how women in politics are treated after she was raped by her former colleague Bruce Lehrmann in Parliament House in 2019, took to Instagram to share the news last night.

"Today I married my best friend. 🤍" she posted alongside three photos from the ceremony.

The pair married at The Valley Estate in Currumbin on the first day of winter.

Higgins and Sharaz got engaged on New Year's Eve in 2022, at Cape Byron lighthouse in Byron Bay NSW.

"I didn't want to enter another year without you knowing I want to spend all my years with you, Brittany Higgins," Sharaz posted the day after he got down on one knee.

"I'm the luckiest guy in the world."

Higgins and Sharaz met in Canberra in 2020.

They now live in the south of France.

The wedding comes six weeks after Justice Michael Lee handed down his judgment in Lehrmann's defamation case against Network Ten and journalist Lisa Wilkinson, finding "Mr Lehrmann raped Ms Higgins" in a senator's office in March 2019.

Higgins released a lengthy statement after the ruling.

In it, she said: "It has been five years of criminal and civil trials and government inquiries for the truth to finally be heard.

"It is now time to heal."

A Brisbane dad was left bloodied, bruised, confused and with signs of a concussion.

Andrew McKenzie was coward punched in the heart of the city, in an unprovoked attack which left the 52-year-old in hospital.

Now he's appealing for help in finding his attacker, who is still on the run weeks after the incident on Queen Street.

McKenzie's recollection of the frightening assault is patchy.

He knows he was on his way home and believes it was around 5.30pm.

"On Friday the 10th, if, if that's the day, it was a normal work day in the city," he told 9News.

"I've got recollections of either waiting in a cab line, waiting in a bus line."

He was one of thousands of city workers spilling onto CBD streets but without rhyme or reason he was the one two young thugs decided to target.

"You know, I'm a 52-year-old guy in a business shirt and suit pants … with a computer rucksak over my shoulder, walking down the street," he said.

His partner Sarah Robins was terrified after her phone rang.

"He called me, facetimed me, and said he'd been attacked and then his phone cut out," she recalled.

"People die from a single punch."

McKenzie was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital before being discharged early the next morning.

In the days after, things went from bad to worse – he was dizzy and in pain.

And a week on from the hit, suffered a fall at home.

"That was the scariest medical episode and day of my life," he said.

McKenzie's now recovering from his physical injuries but there's also emotional impact of what happened that night.

He doesn't know if he'll feel safe walking the city streets again.

"All the ladies who have to work in the city and I now understand how they might feel scared walking down certain streets and at certain times."

Making him feel more unsafe is the fact that his attackers are still out there.

Police are investigating. They hope security vision from nearby businesses will help piece together the gaps in McKenzie's memory.

World Vision estimates three million affected children require humanitarian aid.

A search is underway to find a person who is believed to be trapped underneath the rubble of a partially collapsed townhouse after an explosion occurred in Sydney's west.

Emergency crews were called to the home on Waikanda Crescent in Whalan, which collapsed after an explosion about 12.50pm.

"There is still one person believed to be under the rubble," Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Ross Genders said.

"At this time, all we know is they're alive," Genders said.

"We have heard taps and noises, and those are generalised as being an indicator that they're alive."

Five people have been taken to hospital with minor injuries, including a woman in her 60s and a wheelchair-bound woman in her 70s.

The five people are in stable conditions.

Three were taken to Blacktown Mt Druitt Hospital and two were taken to the Hawkesbury District Health Service.

Rescuers are focusing their search towards the back side of the building, where the most rubble has collapsed.

Rescuers are continuing the process of carefully removing the rubble piece-by-piece.

The missing person was believed to be on the second level of the building when the floor collapsed in the blast.

Intensive care paramedics remain on the scene.

"The large blast blew out windows and damaged neighbouring townhouses in the multi-apartment complex," Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement.

Police have said that it could take days to determine the cause of the explosion.

"There was a light, a bright light, then boom, my kitchen window blew out first, then the ceiling collapsed", nearby resident Walter told 9News.

"There's glass all over my verandah, two of my bedroom windows were smashed out, and my lounge room was smashed as well," nearby resident Leanne Ansell said.

The gas supply to the area has been cut off.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the danger had been isolated to the area of the collapse.

More than a dozen Fire and Rescue units were deployed including HAZMAT and aerial drone units.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the scene, and local traffic diversions are in place.

MetService had forecast northwesterly winds for Canterbury today.

The crash was reported around 5:30pm.
