Australia has announced its renewed support for Ukraine with a new $100 million military aid package.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Richard Marles, announced the package overnight during a brief visit to Ukraine.

"Australia remains committed to supporting Ukraine to resolve the conflict on its terms," Marles said.

"I am pleased to announce an additional $100 million of military assistance, including world leading drone technology, with the support of local Australian defence industry.

"Australia is also providing critical air-to-ground precision munitions and short range air defence systems."

The Albanese Government's support package for the war-torn country includes $50 million in military aid, which includes $30 million towards uncrewed aerial systems and another $15 million for other high priority equipment, such as combat helmets, rigid hull inflatable boats, boots, fire masks and generators.

The other $50 million is earmarked for short range air defence systems and the delivery of air-to-ground precision munitions.

The new package takes Australia's military assistance to $880 million since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and it brings Australia's overall support for Ukraine to more than $1 billion.

During his visit, Marles met with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal as well as the country's Deputy Minister of Defence and watched the Ukraine armed forces carry out training drills.

Marles reiterated Australia's commitment to the multinational program to train Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel in the United Kingdom, through Operation Kudu.

"Ukraine and its people have endured more than two years of Russia's full-scale invasion but their spirit remains strong," Marles said.

"This was reaffirmed during my meeting with Prime Minister Shmyhal.

Earlier Marles visited Poland and met his counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

They are said to have discussed the global implications of the conflict in Ukraine, including Russia's flagrant breach of the UN Charter.

Marles thanked the Polish government for its support of the recent six-month deployment of a Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail surveillance plane.

The aircraft is understood to have helped protect a vital gateway of international humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine.

"Australia is proud to be working with our partners, including Poland, to support Ukraine's self-defence," Marles said.

A Queensland police officer has been struck by a car in an alleged hit and run in Brisbane's south.

The woman police say is responsible, remains on the run over 24 hours after the incident, which took place about 11.30pm on Friday in Wishart.

Police pulled over the Nissan Pulsar for speeding but when officers approached the driver's side of the vehicle, the car accelerated, striking a senior constable.

PolAir located the woman's car a short time after she fled the scene – it was crashed into a tree and abandoned.

While the driver remains at large, the constable was transported to hospital and treated for injuries to his hand and leg.

Asian elephants Tang Mo and Pak Boon will bid farewell to Taronga Zoo after almost two decades to make way for a new mixed species habitat.

The pair will depart the zoo in mid-2025 as part of Taronga's "Great Migration" and move into a newly established 14-hectare, open-range habitat in South Australia with three other elephants from Auckland Zoo and Perth Zoo.

Their departure will make way for a new, multi-species habitat featuring 'Hari', a Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros from Dubbo Zoo, who will join several Water Buffalo.

Greater One-horned Rhinoceros are often referred to as "real-life unicorns" due to their distinctive solo horn which distinguishes them from other rhino species.

Taronga Conservation Society Australia CEO Cameron Kerr said Tang Mo and Pak Boon have been much-loved residents of the zoo arriving in 2006 to establish a regional breeding program.

"While these magnificent creatures will certainly be missed in Sydney, I'm so heartened to plan for their move to Monarto Safari Park where they will be able to join a bigger herd and live in a larger more complex habitat," Kerr said.

"I'd like to thank the Kingdom of Thailand for their ongoing support of this program and also acknowledge the dedicated keepers and staff across Taronga Zoo Sydney who have cared for our elephants in Sydney for almost two decades."

Zoos SA Chief Executive Elaine Bensted said Monarto can't wait to welcome them next year.

"We can't wait to watch as Pak Boon and Tang Mo settle in alongside Burma, Permai and Putra Mas at Monarto Safari Park, with the two females joining the herd, just as they would in the wild," she said.

"The most important thing is to get all the elephants safely to their new home in South Australia and that they settle and start to benefit from being in a social herd."

The federal government has committed $160 million to establish a national firearms register, to track ownership and distribution in real-time.

The historic funding will be outlined in May's Budget and delivered over four years to create a register as well as support a range of Commonwealth and State and Territory firearms reforms.

The system will provide police with near real-time information on firearms, parts, and owners and link information with other relevant police and government databases.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said the tragic events at Wieambilla in 2022 were a catalyst for progressing the reform, sparked from the response to 1996 Port Arthur massacre.

"Once established, police will know where firearms are, who owns them, and what other risks to the community and police may exist," Dreyfus said in a statement.

"The Australian Government is committed to protecting the Australian community and ensuring Australia's firearms laws remain amongst the most effective in the world."

State and Territory leaders gave the go-ahead for a National Firearms Register last December, marking the most significant improvement in Australia's firearms management systems in almost 30 years.

The initiative is led by the Attorney-General's Department and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and will be developed with community and stakeholder consultation.

A 28-year-old man has died after a stabbing in Sydney's northwest overnight.

Police were called to an address on Narcissus Avenue in Quakers Hill about 8.25pm yesterday.

The man was found collapsed on a neighbour's porch with stab wounds to the chest.

Officers performed first aid until paramedics arrived but the man died en route to hospital.

The home and surrounding streets remained cordoned off today as homicide and other specialist detectives scoured the scene for evidence.

Detective Superintendent Scott Bingham said police believe the victim and the occupants inside the home were known to each other.

"The community doesn't have a reason to be concerned, as we believe this is not a random attack," Bingham said.

"We believe the man went to the address willingly and something has occurred in the premises."

Bingham reminded the public that it is a criminal offence to carry a knife without a lawful reason.

"Knife crime affects the wider community," he said.

"Nobody should be carrying knives in public.

"There is no need to be carrying a knife and if you are caught with a knife there are substantial penalties."

Police are currently combing through CCTV and are making several inquiries into persons connected to the premises. 

Anyone with CCTV footage or dashcam vision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or Riverstone Police. 

A group of people have been rescued from a sinking boat off the coast of Sydney, with a teenager and two adults winched to safety by helicopter.

Footage of the rescue showed the moment the trio were plucked from the sinking fishing boat 20 nautical miles (37 kilometres) from the coast of Coledale, south of the Royal National Park.

The men called Triple Zero, who then mobilised the Westpac rescue helicopter to retrieve the group from the rapidly sinking boat.

As the helicopter arrived, the boy's father ensured the teenager was taken from the water first before he was winched to safety.

The other man was retrieved by a nearby boat and taken to shore.

The three men were reportedly in the area for a shark-fishing competition.

The man and his son were flown to the rescue base at La Perouse to be checked by paramedics.

The group were praised by rescuers for their preparedness.

"They did everything right," Tony Waller, a spokesman for the Westpac rescue helicopter said.

"They stayed with the partially submerged boat, and they had their lifejackets on."

A ‘bloody angry’ victim is counting the cost.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly breached security at Sydney Airport, running onto the tarmac.

Police responded to a call from Sydney International Airport on Friday, after a man allegedly ran through the main screening area of the airport.

Australian Federal Police officers intercepted the man on the tarmac, they said in a statement today.

"AFP officers arrested a man, 30, who allegedly ran through the main screening area and gained access to restricted areas, including the apron", they said.

The "apron" is the area where planes are loaded with baggage and passengers outside the terminal before they taxi to the runways.

The man was seen walking across the top of an aerobridge outside the terminal after he allegedly ran through the screening area inside the terminal.

He then allegedly tried to enter the cargo hold of a flight bound for Sri Lanka but baggage handlers intervened and the man was arrested shortly after by AFP officers on the tarmac.

The man was taken to hospital for assessment, and remains there today.

The 30-year-old was issued a court attendance notice for breaching restricted areas of the airport.

The man was not charged with any other offences.

He has been banned from Sydney International Airport for 12 months.

Police are seeking information after children were approached by an unknown male, who allegedly exposed himself and started inappropriate sexual conversations on two separate occasions in Perth.

WA police said that a man approached an 11-year-old boy in Canning Vale on Saturday,  April 14, and "engaged the child in an inappropriate conversation of a sexual nature".

A week later on Saturday, April 20, an 11-year-old girl was approached in Thornlie by a man who allegedly exposed himself to her, again making inappropriate sexual comments.

In both cases, the children went home and reported the incidents to their families.

In both cases, the children were approached by an unknown man on a bicycle.

Both incidents occurred between 5.30 pm and 6 pm.

In the first incident on April 14, the male involved was described as fair-skinned, aged between 16 and 20-years-old.

The description of the man in the second incident very closely matched the first description.

"Given the close proximity of the incidents, the similar circumstances and similar description of the male person involved, it is being investigated whether the two incidents are linked," Western Australia police said.
