A senior journalist who almost died in a fiery crash in Adelaide has come face to face with the drugged and speeding driver who nearly killed him, with his son telling the offender he is a "bad man" who should stay in jail.

Ben Hyde from the Advertiser was leaving work in October 2021 when he was hit by Luigi Gligora on West Terrace in Adelaide's CBD, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury.

Gligora had cannabis in his system and was travelling at 170km/h — 110km/h over the speed limit.

He pleaded guilty in December to an aggravated count of causing serious harm by dangerous driving.

"You did everything you could to kill me that night," Hyde told Gligora while reading his victim impact statement in court today.

"You maimed me and left me in a burning car to die."

Twelve other victim impact statements were read, including one from Hyde's eldest son, Oliver.

"I hope you stay in jail for a really long time … you are a bad man, Luigi," the seven-year-old told the court.

Gligora remained silent in the dock as the statements were read aloud, but later apologised in court, saying he should have pleaded guilty from the start.

He will remain on bail until he is sentenced.

An Australian man who shares his name with the former United States president Donald Trump has spoken to media after appearing in court in Sydney.

The 33-year-old was dressed in a blonde wig and a suit with a red tie and had orange tan on his face when he walked out of Downing Local Court today. 

The man, whose legal name is Donald Trump, was facing charges of assault after an incident last year.

He had showed a stranger his license outside Stonewall Hotel in Darlinghurst and, when she didn't give it back, he allegedly grabbed for it with both hands.

Trump's appearance in court today was, however, fleeting as the prosecutor withdrew the assault charge.

"I was on my beautiful Trump plane, so I came to Australia, my beautiful ID with the name Trump on it, it was stolen, the police then charged me," he told media.

"All I did, I put my hand on my beautiful ID, because who doesn't want a Trump ID, I love my Trump ID so much.

"I grab it and the police, they charge me with occasion assault bodily harm, it's a disgrace to our country."

Meanwhile, his namesake is fighting his own court battles overseas as he runs for re-election in this year's presidential race.

"I would say to American Donald Trump, I think this guy, first of all, he's a great guy, he's a beautiful guy, it's a witch hunt, same as me, it's a witch hunt," he said.

"I say to you, I'm on your side and I'm telling you to win, win and win."

Trump refers to himself as the "Aussie Donald Trump" online, where he posts impersonations and videos supporting his namesake.

One person has been taken to Auckland City Hospital with critical injuries.
