Jada Pinkett Smith reveals secret split from Will

Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed she and husband Will Smith have been living "completely separate lives" since 2016.

In a clip from her forthcoming NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith said the couple had not previously gone public with their separation because they were not "ready yet".

They were "still trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership", she said.

"How do we present that to people?" she told Kotb.

"We hadn't figured that out."

Pinkett Smith, 52, and Smith, 55, have been married since 1997. Pinkett Smith said they are not legally divorced.

Their marriage has come under scrutiny during the period she says they have been apart.

In July 2020, singer August Alsina revealed that he had been romantically involved with Pinkett Smith, something she confirmed during an episode with her husband on Red Table Talk.

"I got into an entanglement with August," Pinkett Smith said at the time, explaining then that the superstar couple "were going through a very difficult time" when it occurred.

Then there was the Oscars slap.

During the 2022 Academy Awards, Smith stormed the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock after he made a joke about Pinkett Smith being bald. She suffers from alopecia, which has caused her hair loss.

In a new interview with People, Pinkett Smith opened up about the incident, which she said, like many other people, she initially thought was a comedic bit between the two men.

"I thought, 'This is a skit.' I was like, 'There's no way that Will hit him,'" she recalled.

"It wasn't until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realised it wasn't a skit."

She told the publication that as soon as they were alone she asked Smith, "Are you okay?"

Pinkett Smith told Kotb during their interview that the marriage fractured because of "a lot of things.

"I think by the time we got to 2016, we we both just exhausted with trying," Pinkett Smith said.

"I think we were both kind of still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be."

She said she "made a promise" that there would never be a reason for her and Smith to divorce "and I just haven't been able to break that promise", she said.

Pinkett Smith reveals more about her marriage, career and early life in her forthcoming memoir, Worthy. The book releases Oct. 17.

Two-metre shark forces closures of Sydney's popular Manly Beach

A two-metre shark has caused panic at Manly Beach, forcing beachgoers out of the water twice before it brought at end to swimming for the day.

A member of the public alerted lifeguards that a shark was swimming near the shore before the shark alarm was activated and all swimmers were called out of the water.

Lifeguards then searched for the two-metre grey nurse shark for an hour before declaring it safe for people to enter the water, only to set the alarm off again minutes later.

"A member of the public spotted it again, so we went back into close mode," Beach Saftey Councillor Clinton Rose said.

Lifeguards closed the beach for the rest of the day as a precaution.

Grey nurse sharks are not considered aggressive, but they can bite people if provoked.

Experts say a close encounter with one of these sharks is rare.

"It was just doing laps up and down the beach … chasing whiting or salmon, trying to feed," Marine Life ranger David Baxter said.

'Incredibly serious': Multiple antisemitic threats made on Melbourne's street

Police are investigating reports antisemitic threats have been made towards members of Melbourne's Jewish community in multiple different instances.

Rabbi Daniel Rabin was walking to a synagogue in Caulfield with his eight-year-old son when he was confronted by a car of people.

Rabin has told 9News the group of people inside the car made violent antisemitic threats towards him.

"A car stopped and we were a little anxious. The windows rolled down and there were four people in there and shouted terrible things," he said.

"My son looked at me in complete shock."

It comes as police investigate a separate incident overnight, where antisemitic threats were allegedly made towards a man walking in South Yarra.

The man was on Toorak Road near Williams Road about 4pm yesterday when a car pulled over and the occupants wound down a window and shouted threats, police have said.

Audio of the alleged incident has been circulating on social media.

Detectives have confirmed they have resolved the incident.

"Police have spoken to the parties involved and after a thorough investigation, the matter has been determined to the satisfaction of the reporting person," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

"Victoria Police is committed to investigating any antisemitic or hate-based behaviour or incidents of this nature and stress there is absolutely no place in our society for such acts."

The incidents follow the shock attack on Israel by Islamist group Hamas heightened racial tensions around the world.

More than 1000 Israelis have now died in the conflict, while air strikes on Gaza have killed around 800 people, including many women and children.

The incident has fueled growing fears within Melbourne's Jewish community that they could be targeted.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton earlier told 3AW's Neil Mitchell officers would continue to work with the Jewish community to make them feel safe.

"We have put in place immediate (police) tasking across the state to make sure we (are) patrolling where there are large members of the Jewish community," Chief Commissioner Shane Patton told 3AW's Neil Mitchell.

"Members are expected to walk around and check the school's vicinity."

Some parents have said they are keeping their children home from school due to fears of being targeted.

Hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters gathered by the steps of the State Library Victoria in Melbourne late yesterday, with a group of students seen waving Palestinian flags, calling for "freedom and justice for Palestine".

Repatriation flights launched to bring Australians home from Israel

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the federal government will commence repatriation flights out of Israel for Australians who wish to leave but do not have a commercial flight booked.

Two flights have been organised with the assistance of Qantas, with the potential for more to follow.

The first will leave on Friday, and they will be free of charge for Australian citizens.

Anthony Albanese at a press conference on October 11, 2023.

"We understand that many Australians are experiencing difficulties with delays and cancellations with commercial flights," Albanese said.

"For Australians who do not already have plans to leave through commercial options, Australian government-assisted departure flights will depart from Friday."

The government-assisted Qantas flights will depart for London from Ben Gurion Airport, Israel's main international airport on the outskirts of Lod, not far from Tel Aviv.

Albanese said any Australian citizens wanting to leave Israel on the flights needed to register with the government's 24-hour consular emergency centre.

The centre can be called from overseas, including Israel, on +61 2 6261 3305, or on 1300 555 135 from within Australia.

"We are assessing all options to get Australians home as soon as possible who wish to travel back here," Albanese said.

"We have been working on these contingencies over recent times and will continue to do so across the range of issues as a result of the appalling and abhorrent attacks by Hamas that we saw on the weekend."

Albanese said the government remains unsure of exactly how many Australians have been caught up in the conflict.

"Part of the issue, of course, is there are so many Australians in the area that it is not completely clear how many are there, let alone how many are unaccounted for," he said.

"So what we're doing is working through these issues."

Around 10,000 Australians are believed to be either living or holidaying in Israel.
