Three men who were flying from Brisbane to Bali on Friday have been fined after the plane they were travelling on was forced to land in Darwin over the group's alleged drunken and disruptive behaviour. 

The trio – an East Brisbane man, 42, a Sheldon man, 20, and a Wellington Point man, 20, – are accused of becoming so intoxicated during the flight that staff became concerned their behaviour "may have escalated further".

"(Staff) asked the passengers to move from their seats in the exit row, as they would be unable to perform assistance in the event of an emergency," the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said.

"It is alleged the men, initially refused to comply with the directions of the cabin crew, before eventually moving seats.

"The men then allegedly became increasingly disruptive on board the flight, consuming duty-free alcohol they had brought on board, while one passenger was also allegedly observed vaping in their seat."

As a result, the pilot made the decision to divert the aircraft to Darwin, where the men were escorted off the plane by the AFP.

The trio were "spoken to and cautioned" by police within the terminal and were subsequently released from custody.

The group are expected to be fined with: Offensive or disorderly behaviour, consuming alcohol and smoking (includes e-cigarettes) on board aircraft.

The aircraft continued its journey to Denpasar following the diversion.

"We know that the majority of passengers do the right thing and they should not have their travel disrupted or feel unsafe because of the bad behaviour of some individuals," Darwin Airport Commander, Superintendent Greg Davis said.

"We again remind the public that airports are not nightclubs. We have zero tolerance for abusive and aggressive behaviour at airports and on aircraft.

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after the light plane he was piloting collided with a horse in South Australia.

It's understood the aircraft crashed into the horse shortly after take-off at Brentwood, on the York Peninsula, at 9.20am today.

Both the pilot, a 63-year-old man, and his passenger, a 56-year-old woman managed to escape the wreckage, however the man was seriously injured.

He was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) will is investigating the incident.

A man has been sentenced to 30 years to life in the murder of a US woman more than three decades ago.

Daniel Rees, 60, of Barberton, Ohio, pleaded guilty on Friday in Summit County to aggravated murder in the 1991 death of Rachael Johnson in Akron.

Prosecutors agreed to change the underlying offence from rape to kidnapping as part of an agreement sparing the defendant a trial and a possible death sentence.

"I am a monster," Rees said in remarks to the court. "What I did is horrendous. The crime I did is horrendous."

Judge Susan Baker Ross sentenced Rees to life in prison with possible parole after 30 years, the most severe penalty in the state other than the death penalty at the time of the crime.

Johnson was found dead on March 30, 1991, in Akron's Chapel Hill neighbourhood. The Tallmadge woman suffered blunt force trauma and had been sexually assaulted, stabbed multiple times and set on fire, police said.

Rees was arrested in March 2020 after authorities said he was linked to the crime by DNA from distant relatives. A friend of the victim's daughter who worked with the victim's sister at a printing company, Rees had no significant criminal history and hadn't been a suspect in the case.

Defence attorneys unsuccessfully challenged the admissibility of their client's statement to investigators about Johnson's murder and DNA evidence collected from his trash, and plea talks began after the evidence was ruled admissible.

Defence attorney Joe Gorman said Rees isn't the same person he was three decades ago and didn't want the family to have to go through a trial. He also said it's likely his client, who will be 90 when he first comes up for parole, won't leave prison.

"This is a life sentence," Gorman said. "He understood that walking in here."

Rees apologised to Johnson's family not just for her slaying but also for how he befriended them afterward, calling that "the worst thing to do." Family members expressed fury at the defendant, calling him a monster. The victim's sister, Leila Hanes, said he was "an abomination and a coward."

Larry Johnson, the father of the victim, had trouble delivering his remarks because he was so distraught.

"It never ends," he said. "They say 'closure.' What the hell is closure? I ask that you, your honour give him what he deserves, please. I'd like to see him spend a lifetime in prison."
