Police are hunting for two men after a 29-year-old man was killed in a stabbing attack in Sydney's Inner West.

Police were called to Donnelly Street in Balmain about 3.40pm yesterday, where they found the victim who had been stabbed multiple times.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery, but died.

Both the targeted attack and the culprits' attempt to destroy key evidence were witnessed by residents.

Police say the pair they're now looking for fled in the white Jeep Compass, driving to nearby Five Dock, where they dumped and torched the stolen car on Preston Avenue.

The two men then took off in a light coloured Hilux with registration plates DE24GE.

Police say the partially-burnt car at Five Dock was a getaway vehicle and the two hooded men inside were spotted by witnesses.

A firearm was found inside.

Witnesses have the described the two men responsible for the daylight attack as being of Māori or Islander appearance.

The victim, who is not from the area, is a low level associate of organised crime.

Witness Simon Tredinnick said: "Balmain is a very affluent area … you don't expect these things to happen."

Detectives are tight-lipped on whether the murder is connected to a spate of gangland shootings across Sydney amid an escalating drug war.

"We'll explore those connections but at this stage we can't confirm or deny that," Detective Chief Inspector Grant Wilson said

A teenage boy has managed to escape injury after two machete-wielding thugs allegedly chased him down in Melbourne's west.

Students from Caroline Chisholm Christian College were forced to hide as afternoon school pick-up took a violent turn on Friday.

Students were forced back into the classroom, some telling 9News the attack may be in retaliation to the death of 16-year-old Pasawm Lyhym in May.

Police say a student from the Braybrook college was approached by two males around 3.30pm on Friday before he was threatened with two large knives.

The victim managed to outrun the pair, one of whom ditched his weapon in a front yard on Ravenhall Street.

The 40 centimetre blade was spotted by a resident and seized by police on Saturday morning.

An email was sent to parents from the school's principal confirming the incident and reassuring parents "the safety and wellbeing of every student is our highest priority".

"It's these gangs that are coming around and picking on innocent kids," local resident Corrinna Cassar told 9News.

"It's not just Chisholm, it's everywhere."

The college is no stranger to violence.

When 16-year-old old Pasawm Lyhym was killed at a Sunshine bus stop in May, police maintained a presence at the school, where it's understood the alleged offenders attended.

Witnesses have told 9News, this latest attack may have been sparked by Pasawm's death.

Residents say the college has been forced into lockdown at least three times since May as a result of escalating violence.

Locals are calling for more to be done by police in the area to combat the level of youth crime.

"They're getting charged, then they're getting caught again, and then, they're on bail… there needs to be a harsher punishment," Cassar said.

No arrests have been made.

Three men who were flying from Brisbane to Bali on Friday have been fined after the plane they were travelling on was forced to land in Darwin over the group's alleged drunken and disruptive behaviour. 

The trio – an East Brisbane man, 42, a Sheldon man, 20, and a Wellington Point man, 20, – are accused of becoming so intoxicated during the flight that staff became concerned their behaviour "may have escalated further".

"(Staff) asked the passengers to move from their seats in the exit row, as they would be unable to perform assistance in the event of an emergency," the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said.

"It is alleged the men, initially refused to comply with the directions of the cabin crew, before eventually moving seats.

"The men then allegedly became increasingly disruptive on board the flight, consuming duty-free alcohol they had brought on board, while one passenger was also allegedly observed vaping in their seat."

As a result, the pilot made the decision to divert the aircraft to Darwin, where the men were escorted off the plane by the AFP.

The trio were "spoken to and cautioned" by police within the terminal and were subsequently released from custody.

The group are expected to be fined with: Offensive or disorderly behaviour, consuming alcohol and smoking (includes e-cigarettes) on board aircraft.

The aircraft continued its journey to Denpasar following the diversion.

"We know that the majority of passengers do the right thing and they should not have their travel disrupted or feel unsafe because of the bad behaviour of some individuals," Darwin Airport Commander, Superintendent Greg Davis said.

"We again remind the public that airports are not nightclubs. We have zero tolerance for abusive and aggressive behaviour at airports and on aircraft.
