It's clear to see why Mitchell Gaffney and Maddy Edsell chose the beautiful Wandin Estate as the venue for their wedding day.

The tranquil vineyard, with stands of eucalyptus trees dotted around the property, sits in the Hunter Valley, an area renowned for hosting weddings of couples starting new chapters in their lives.

Photos, seen by 9news.com.au, show Gaffney and Edsell's wedding unfolding on a perfect winter's day, under endless blue skies.

There are photographs of Gaffney and Edsell cutting into a three-layer cake, and another one of Edsell driving a convertible VW Beetle restored by her father across the grass of the estate.

She is beaming, and waves to family and friends with one hand.

Seven self-contained villas allow some guests to stay on Wandin Estate, while others who attend weddings at the venue head off and travel to their homes or other accommodation in the area.

The large white bus that carried dozens of guests away from Gaffney and Edsell's wedding never made it to its destination.

It catastrophically rolled over about 11.30pm on Sunday night while trying to navigate an off-ramp near the Hunter expressway, about 50km north-west of Newcastle.

Ten people are dead and more than 20 in hospital, including one person in a critical condition.

The 58-year-old driver Brett Button has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death.

He was refused bail and will appear at Cessnock Local Court tomorrow.

Police believe the bus was heading to Singleton, a road journey that would normally take around 35 minutes.

Singleton, a town of 16,000 people situated on the banks of the Hunter River, is believed to be home for many guests at the wedding, including the newlyweds.

Gaffney and Edsell both played for the Singleton Roosters Australian Rules football team.

Gaffney had joined the club after moving north from Melbourne, the city where he and Edsell had grown up, it's believed.

Guests at the wedding also included players from Warrandyte Cricket Club in Melbourne, where Gaffney used to play.

Gaffney and Edsell were Warrandyte locals, a suburb in the north-east of Melbourne, until they moved to NSW several years ago.

Warrandyte Cricket Club president Royce Jaksic told The Sydney Morning Herald there were up to nine current players and their partners on the bus at the time of the crash.

Jaksic said some wedding guests had suffered "some minor injuries – a broken jaw, a broken collarbone, things like that".

"But you know, compared to the 10 people that have tragically lost their lives, I think we've been blessed in this one," he said.

"If you do the maths, they've been extremely lucky. We've just got fingers and toes crossed that no-one else loses their lives."

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was just one of many public figures who expressed their sympathies to the victim's loved ones.

"For a joyous day like that in a beautiful place to end with such terrible loss of life and injury is so cruel and so sad and so unfair," Albanese said.

"People hire a bus for weddings in order to keep their guests safe, and that just adds to the unimaginable nature of this tragedy."

Albanese described the crash, and the deep scars it will leave behind, as "horrific", while Premier Chris Minns called it "a terrible, terrible event in the history of New South Wales".

Local Kim Greco was among those who left flowers near the scene.

"One of the happiest days of your lives and turns into one of the most tragic," she said.

Steve Braunias reports on a methamphetamine killing in West Auckland.

A man has died and two people have been rescued after their small boat capsized in rough seas near Port Douglas in Far North Queensland last night.

Queensland Police Sergeant Andrew Ibell said the group of three men had been fishing when their 4.3-metre aluminium dinghy overturned.

Emergency services were alerted after they received calls for help at about 10pm near Double Island.

A search and rescue was launched by Cairns Water Police, along with an aerial search.

"The initial information we have is the vessel capsized in rough seas and the men remained with that vessel until they were rescued," Ibell said.

"Subsequent checks of mobile phone data indicated the position was more likely to be out in the vicinity of Batt Reef."

Police found an overturned boat at about 12.45am this morning and rescued a 24-year-old man and a 26-year-old man from the water.

The body of a 54-year-old man from Napranum was recovered.

Police have launched an investigation into the accident.

Meanwhile, authorities have called off a search for a 68-year-old woman who was reported missing after a separate capsizing incident in the Torres Strait.

The woman went missing when her vessel overturned near Mabuiag Island on Thursday.

She fought a female constable and spat directly in her face, hitting her in the eye.

A butter chicken simmer sauce has been recalled as it may contain nuts and has no allergy note.

Food Authority NSW has issued a recall notice for One Rusty Jack Indian Butter Chicken Simmer Sauce 400g with an expiry up to and including May 25.

The sauce, sold at IGA in NSW and Queensland and produced by Vegetali Foods, may contain cashew nuts, with fears those with an allergy could have a reaction if the product is consumed.

"Consumers who have a cashew allergy or intolerance should not consume this product and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund," the notice states.

The US State Department has confirmed the arrest of American citizen Travis Leake in Russia and said US embassy officials attended his arraignment on the weekend.

Moscow's courts of general jurisdiction earlier released a statement on the social media app Telegram saying a US citizen had been detained on drugs charges.

Leake was detained on Saturday where "the Khamovniki District Court of Moscow took a preventive measure against an American citizen," it said.

A court statement identified him "Travis Michael Leek."

"The former paratrooper and musician is accused of engaging in the narcotics business through attracting young people," the statement said.

It added he had appeared at the court of Moscow on Saturday, June 10 and will remain in custody until August 6, 2023.

On Sunday, the US State Department confirmed Leake's detention.

"We can confirm that Michael Travis Leake was arrested and is detained in Moscow. Embassy officials attended his arraignment on June 10," a spokesperson told CNN.

"We will continue to monitor the case closely."

"The US Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no greater priority than the safety and security of US citizens overseas," they said.

"When a US citizen is detained overseas, the department pursues consular access as soon as possible and works to provide all appropriate consular assistance."

Leake's mother says she hasn't heard from officials yet

Leake's mother Glenda Garcia says she has yet to hear from US government officials regarding the current status of her son and is worried about what he's going through.

"Of course, I am worried. Of course, I am concerned, " she told CNN on Sunday. "He's in prison in a foreign country, that is a concern."

Garcia said she doesn't know if her son has a lawyer and she doesn't know what to do herself.

"I have not heard from the State Department. If I don't hear from them tomorrow, I will try to call them," she said. "I don't really know anything other than what I heard on the news."

Garcia last spoke with her son on Mother's Day, she said, noting they typically talk every few weeks.

Regarding her son's time in Russia, Garcia said, "I know he was in a band, I know he taught English."

Denial of guilt

Video of Leake's arrest from his home and a mug shot from a Russian police station were published by Russian media outlets on last Thursday.

Ren TV, a tabloid outlet, reported Leake's statements to police in which he reportedly said: "I don't understand why I'm here. I don't admit guilt, I don't believe I could have done what I'm accused of because I don't know what I'm accused of."

The arrest comes amid Russia's war with Ukraine, which has seen already poor relations between the US and Russia plummet.

In March, Russian security services arrested US journalist Evan Gershkovich, accusing him of spying, which he denies.

CNN filmed with Leake in 2014 for an episode of Parts Unknown in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Host Anthony Bourdain had personally hand-picked Leake to participate in the show.

In the episode, Leake talked about his frustrations with censorship and relayed an incident involving his band and MTV. "This was a documentary series about musicians standing up and risking their lives in some cases, to stand up against government abuse of power, government corruption," he said. "And yet, a foreign government was able to editorially control what Americans viewers see on their TV screens. That to me is a scandal of epic proportion."

Darya Tarasova, who had produced the episode, said the "band wasn't that famous but Travis and his friends had been very vocal about the freedom of speech and state oppression in Russia. Bourdain really liked that interview," she said.

"Travis was a showman; very articulate and he loved Russia," Tarasova added. "Bands from the Moscow rock scene would go to him to write songs in English for them and proofread their lyrics," she said.

"The last time we spoke was in 2018 and he seemed depressed and upset, but Travis would never do the things he is being accused of. He is an American in Russia and is very aware of the situation he's in. But I'm surprised he stayed after the war started, as it was very risky for him."

Social media accounts and videos confirmed by a CNN reporter show Leake as a frontman in Lovi Noch, which translates to "Catch the Night."

He was also a music producer for other Russian music groups during his time in Moscow.

A 23-year-old man who allegedly ran over and killed a Western Australian police officer will be charged with murder.

Constable Anthony Woods succumbed to his injuries in hospital after his "shattered" family made the decision to turn off his life support.

While paying tribute this morning, WA Police Union President Paul Gale commended Woods for his "courage and commitment" to the job.

Woods suffered fatal injuries when he and his partner tried to arrest the occupants of an allegedly stolen car on Thursday in the Perth suburb of Ascot.

Reagan Ainsley Chown allegedly ran down Woods, reversed over him and dragged the officer up to 20 metres, eventually pinning him under the car.

"His partners and other officers on the scene did everything they could, giving him CPR before the ambulance arrived," Gale said.

"Anthony fought to stay alive for the next three days but given the extent of his horrific injuries, his wife and family made the decision to turn his life support off.

"This was a decision no family should make."

Flags will fly at half-mast at police stations across WA today.

"This senseless act and tragedy is being felt by the police and first responders far beyond. Our hearts go out to his wife, family, friends and colleagues," Gale said.

"Anthony exemplified the courage and commitment to be the best police officer he could. This was a life that was taken away too soon.

"I have been inundated with calls and it's being felt by everybody and we are a blue family and it affects everybody far and wide."

Chown was initially charged with an act to prevent arrest that caused grievous bodily harm, stealing a motor vehicle and drug offences.

He is remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

Woods' family said they had been devastated by his loss.

"Our pain at this time is indescribable," the family said in an emotional statement.

"We are shattered to lose our dear Anthony.

"He was a devoted husband and loving son, brother, and uncle who was taken from this earth far too soon.

"Anthony will be remembered as a funny, hard-working man who loved the West Coast Eagles and mucking around with his mates."

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch hailed Woods as "a brave and dedicated" officer, who had served three years in the force.

"Everyone is hurting," he said.

"We'll put our arms around his family, as we do, and our policing colleagues who are hurting so much, and show them our love and support.

"You did your duty, mate."

Two other people in the car, a 20-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, were released pending further investigation.

Woods' colleagues had to use a car jack borrowed from a nearby resident to lift the car off him.

Suffering chest injuries, he was taken to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition.

Woods is the 88th Western Australian police officer to die in the line of duty.

"Our last officer died in 2007, it's been 16 years, which is too soon and shouldn't have happened," Gale said.

A full police funeral will be offered to Woods' family.

Rescuers are searching for three British tourists who are missing after a fire erupted on Sunday on the boat they were travelling on in the Egyptian Red Sea, according to state news outlet Al-Ahram.

The tourist boat was carrying 27 people, including 15 English tourists, off the coast of the city of Marsa Alam, according to Al-Ahram.

Twelve of the British tourists were rescued and the search for the remaining three is underway, according to Al-Ahram.

The state outlet didn't mention how the fire started.

A spokesperson for the UK's Foreign Office (FCDO) said in a statement Sunday that they are "in contact with local authorities" and are supporting British nationals involved.

The incident comes just days after beaches were closed in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada, after a Russian man was killed in a shark attack.

A devastating bus crash that killed 10 people and put 21 others in hospital overnight has left a community reeling today.

The bus overturned in the New South Wales Hunter region near Greta, as it was ferrying guests back from a nearby wedding, at about 11.30pm. Police have arrested the driver.

Premier Chris Minns has said the priority now was to care for the injured and those who had lost a loved one.

"Whatever the final toll is, in this terrible accident, it will be more than we can bear," he said.

Cessnock mayor Jay Suvaal urged people to consider how they could help.

"We need to be thanking (emergency services), thinking of what we can do as a community in circumstances like this, whether it's donating blood, and looking at other ways," he said.

"As more comes to light, I'm sure there will be more information provided."

Wandin Valley Estate, where the wedding was held, will stay closed today.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the bus crash overnight that has claimed the lives of some of our guests," the owners said in a statement.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the victims and we are supporting them in any way we can.

"At this time, we are providing support to those guests who need our help and we wish to maintain their privacy and won't be making any further statements at this time."

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement to cameras this morning that the government would offer whatever support was necessary to the families involved.

Albanese confirmed that he had been told by NSW Premier Chris Minns that some locals had been caught up in the tragedy.

And he warned that the impact of it would continue for some time.

"The mental scars of this will not go away," he said.

"They are there forever, and we need to make sure that when the spotlight leaves, the care doesn't, for people who have witnessed this, and for people who have experienced this tragedy first hand.

"For now, we're thinking of you.

"Australia wraps its arms around you and Australians' hopes and prayers are with you on this tragic day."

'Heartbreak' in small community

Singleton mayor Sue Moore said the healing process would stretch for "weeks and months"."

"This is an absolute tragedy," she said.

Local woman Nicky Ainley said it was "truly tragic".

The first inkling she had that something had happened was the sound of helicopters, which woke her at about 1am.

"There was very thick, heavy fog, but you could see helicopters circling around with spotlights," she said.

"Already the community on social media were interacting, saying clearly 'this is horrific', and 'something had happened.'"

She said the tragedy was "heartbreaking" for the small community.

The roundabout where the crash occurred was used daily by many locals, she said.

Hunter MP Dan Repacholi said he had been "devastated" by the news.

"My wife broke out in tears," he said.

"It's devastating for our community and devastating for the people involved in this."

Minns said it was a "profoundly tragic event".

"I know the whole community of NSW, and in particular the people of the Hunter, will be shocked and saddened to wake up to this news today," he said.

"I thank our emergency services personnel and agencies for their incredible response overnight and today – NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Health and Transport for NSW.

"Support is being offered to those impacted by this tragedy."

Cessnock MP Clayton Barr offered his sympathies to the first responders, including firefighters and paramedics.

"There is a bunch of emergency service workers out there who will put their head down on the pillow at some stage today, and need to deal with this," he said.

"Not to mention the great tragedy for everybody on board the bus who clearly all knew each other."

Cessnock Mayor Jay Suvaal said it was "absolutely horrific" news.

"My thoughts are obviously with the people involved in the accident, but their families and friends as well as the first responders on the scene, because it must have been truly horrible for them as well," he said.

He said it would send "shockwaves" through the community.

"We are a close-knit community, and there will be massive showings of support I would imagine throughout the day," he said.

Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison posted about the tragedy on Facebook.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones involved in the tragedy in the Hunter overnight," she said.

NSW Transport Management Centre executive director Craig Moran said it was a "terrible, tragic event".

He said he wouldn't like to speculate on the potential causes of the crash with the police investigation underway.

The bus overturned at a roundabout on Wine Country Drive near the Hunter Expressway off-ramp at Greta.

"It's not a problem location that we're aware of, and I guess all of that will come out in a matter of course with the police investigation," Moran told Today.

Australian Medical Association Queensland president Dr Maria Boulton praised the first responders who were called to the "awful" crash site.

"This will have an effect, especially when people live and work in the same community and you know they may know that people may have passed away, and our thoughts are with all of them," she said.

Two young women have been rushed to hospital after they were hit by a runaway car in Victoria's north-east last night.

Police believe an unoccupied car rolled down a hill hitting the spectators at the Alexandra Speedway about 10.15pm.

A 16-year-old from Lilydale and 20-year-old from Marysville were airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle came to a stop after hitting a Winnebago.

The car owner, an 18-year-old man, was interviewed by police after the incident.

He was released pending further enquiries.

Alexandra is located about 130 kilometres north-east of Melbourne.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
