Qantas has announced that Vanessa Hudson will become the airline's new CEO when current chief Alan Joyce retires from the role in November 2023.

Hudson will become the first female CEO of Australia's national carrier.

She is currently the Qantas Group's Chief Financial Officer.

When Hudson steps into the role from November this year, she will become the airline's 13th CEO in the company's 103 year history.

In a release to shareholders she said it was an "honour" to be given the top role of leading the airline.

"It's an absolute honour to be asked to lead the national carrier," Hudson said.

"This is an exceptional company full of incredibly talented people and it's very well positioned for the future. My focus will be delivering for those we rely on and who rely on us – our customers, our employees, our shareholders and the communities we serve."

Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder said Hudson was chosen after a "rigorous process".

"A lot of thought has gone into this succession and the Board had a number of high-quality candidates to consider, both internally and externally," Goyder said.

"Vanessa has a deep understanding of this business after almost three decades in a range of roles both onshore and offshore, across commercial, customer and finance. She has a huge amount of airline experience and she's an outstanding leader.

"For the past five years Vanessa has had a direct hand in shaping our strategy as a member of the Group Management Committee, and her handling of the finance and treasury portfolio during the COVID crisis was outstanding. She also led the fleet selection process in 2022 for the renewal of our domestic jet aircraft over the next decade.

"A key strength of Qantas is the sheer depth of talent it has, and Vanessa will be supported by a deep bench of executives across the organisation as well as by the Board."

Hudson joined Qantas in 1994 and held a number of senior commercial, customer and finance roles at the airline before becoming Chief Customer Officer in 2018.

In October 2019, Vanessa became the Group's Chief Financial Officer and held this portfolio through the COVID crisis, when sudden border closures saw revenue evaporate in a matter of weeks.

Vanessa has a Bachelor of Business and was admitted as a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1994.

She lives in Sydney with her husband and two daughters.

Australia has recorded its coldest and wettest April in years, even as some parts of the country broke heat records.

The country recorded an area-averaged 41.4mm of rain last month, Weatherzone has reported.

That's 10.9mm higher than the 1961-1990 average, and the wettest April since 2006.

The higher rainfall was triggered largely by Tropical Cyclones Herman and Ilsa, with the main falls received in Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory.

Heavy cloud also helped keep things cool over much of Australia during April.

The average maximum was 28.65 degrees, 0.05 degrees below the 1961-1990 average, according to Weatherzone.

It's also Australia's coolest April average since 2015.

Nonetheless, there were some parts of Australia that didn't get the weather memo.

Queensland recorded an average maximum that was 1.1 degrees above the long-term average.

In the aptly-named Sunshine State's eastern tropics, some areas even set a new April record for warmth.

The first images have emerged of the Indonesian cell where the Queensland man accused of a violent, naked and drunken rampage is being held.

Bodhi Risby-Jones, 23, from Noosa, is living in a three-metre-by-three-metre cell on a small island off the coast of Sumatra.

An alleged victim, local fisherman Edi Ron, needed 50 stitches after Risby-Jones is accused of throwing a motorcycle on him.

Risby-Jones has said he is "extremely remorseful" after the alleged rampage.

It prompted residents to threaten to burn down the Moon Beach Resort where the Australian tourist was staying on the surfing island.

While Risby-Jones awaits news on his punishment and court appearance, the local village chief says the resort needs to make amends.

The resort is being asked to slaughter a goat, which is part of traditional practices in the conservative province of Aceh.

Public canings are a regular punishment in the province, meaning the 23-year-old could be lashed up to 40 times, as well as face five years in prison if convicted.

The province enforces Sharia law, meaning the sale and consumption of alcohol is banned.

Police chief Jatmiko said last week the Queenslander would not be deported.

A 13-year-old boy has been charged after a teenage girl and two women were killed in a horror crash north of Brisbane.

Nurse Sheree Robertson, 52, from Torquay in Hervey Bay, was driving home from work when she was killed alongside Kelsie Davies, 17, and Michale Chandler, 29.

Police say the boy was behind the wheel of a stolen Mercedes Benz that slammed into the back of a Holden carrying Davies and Chandler, forcing it onto the wrong side of the road and colliding with a Mazda being driven by Robertson.

Another woman, Kaylah Behrens, 23, was airlifted in a critical condition to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Chandler's husband, Matthew Chandler, posted a tribute on social media, calling her the "world's greatest wife and mum".

Staff at Maryborough Hospital where Robertson worked said they were devastated to hear of her death.

One colleague said she was "just a light on the ward", adding she was "loud and boisterous and such a fun loving character".

The teenager is accused of stealing the Mercedes from Dalhousie Street at 8.30pm before going on a joyride in the lead up to the accident.

Neighbour Norton Judd said he saw what happened.

"I came outside and the car was reversing around, nearly hit our fence then took off," Judd said.

The teenager, from Bundaberg, sustained minor injuries to his foot.

He was taken to hospital but released into police custody afterwards.

He has been charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Police were on the hunt for a second person, believed to be a youth, who was a passenger in the Mercedes.

They said the impact of the collision had been felt across the small regional community, with first responders who rushed to the accident knowing the victims.

"It's very concerning to have any crash like this, but for one to be so severe, there will no doubt be ripple effects right across the community of Wide Bay and right around the Maryborough community," Assistant Commissioner Brian Connors said.

"One of the deceased is a local Queensland health employee who was a nurse who worked at the hospital and finished a shift last evening.

"A number of people who have attended the scene have reported to us just how severe the feelings were as a direct result of those persons who were involved who are known to community members, and also known to first responders."

Connors said police were aware the car had been stolen but had no involvement with the vehicle or driver before the crash.

"We are currently investigating the circumstances of the vehicle being taken and how it's being used in between the time it's been taken and the time of the crash," he said.

Connors said the boy was known to police but was not on police bail or under a community order at the time of the crash.

He is due before Maroochydore Children's Court tomorrow,

Anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicle between 8pm on Sunday and the crash is urged to contact police.

The countdown is on to the historic coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, May 6 at Westminster Abbey.

With an election imminent, both sides concede it is possible a deal may go to the polls.

Sharon received a notification back in 2020 that someone was attempting to access her personal MyGov account.

Despite catching it early, changing her password immediately and contacting authorities, hackers are still accessing her data, nearly three years on.

The Melbourne woman is one of many whose account has been targeted by hackers and is warning people to take extreme care with their online security.

"I'm still battling scammers and fraud," Sharon told 3AW's Neil Mitchell.

Hackers harvested her data from the Australian Tax Office, Medicare and Centrelink, and last year claimed $47,000 from ATO under business activity statements.

Scammers have continued to apply for credit cards in her name and have threatened to publish her details on the dark web.

"It's been a nightmare, it's just been so consuming," Sharon said.

"They hacked my account on MyGov and I don't know how they did that.

"It all started in 2020, and I have got a file probably 25cm thick, I've had to do so much, it consumes you."

Sharon isn't alone. 9News is aware of dozens of other similar incidents.

Unfortunately, cybersecurity experts said the scam is sophisticated and can be hard to protect against.

"The cyber criminals trawl that information and they piece it together and gain enough information to get around the security questions to overtake someone's MyGov account," Professor Nigel Phair said.

In Sharon's case, the ATO withdrew the claim against her and she has had to change her driver's licence.

Since the beginning of the year, 3180 Australians have been hacked, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) Scamwatch.
