Police are hunting a man who allegedly attempted to set a woman and her property on fire in an aggravated burglary in Melbourne's inner suburbs.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said they believe 25-year-old Ivanhoe man Bartholemew Griffth entered a property on Salisbury Grove in Northcote about 1.30am yesterday, after checking himself out of hospital.

Police allege he turned the gas on in the kitchen then left.

He allegedly returned about 2.50am with petrol, pushed past a 52-year old woman living at the property and doused the entire house before attempting to ignite paper.

Police claim the victim managed to lock a security door, but the offender then splashed the door and her with petrol.

It's alleged he soon began throwing matches toward her, but was unable to ignite the petrol.

He fled the scene, police say.

Despite chilly conditions, here's how Australian's celebrated their Easter long weekend.

Australia's former prime minister Scott Morrison will "most likely" quit politics in the coming months.

Nine political editor Charles Croucher told Weekend Today he believed Morrison would step down sometime between the federal budget in May and the end of year, which could be a "disaster" for Liberal Leader Peter Dutton.

"This is speculation that makes sense, given he is a former prime minister and former prime ministers tend to move on from the chamber and not sit on the back bench," he said.

His resignation would trigger a by-election in his Sydney seat of Cook, which he currently holds with a 12 per cent margin.

"One person who hasn't confirmed this is Scott Morrison. If and when this does happen, that will force a by-election in his seat of Cook which is a pretty safe Liberal seat," Croucher said.

"There is a ready-made candidate to replace him. It will likely be Mark Speakman.

"That gives a ready-made, well known, well-publicised and much needed new member of the party room for Peter Dutton and the Liberal Party. But that is months away rather than weeks."

It comes after the Liberal Party suffered a historic loss in the Victorian seat of Aston, last week – and after Labor claimed victory in the NSW state election.

Mary Doyle, secured the win against Liberal candidate Roshena Campbell, which marked the first time in over a century, since 1920, a sitting government had won a seat from the opposition in a federal by-election.

Croucher said if the party lost another by-election, it would be a "disaster" for Dutton.

"Questions about his leadership would flare up," he said.

Morrison did not rule out leaving by the end of the year, and said he had not decided what to do next.

"I am focused on doing my job in my local electorate, helping the parliamentary party and supporting the leader," Morrison told The Sunday Age and The Sun-Herald.

An endangered bear has attacked and killed a jogger who was running on a woodland path in Italy's north-east.

The man was out jogging at Val di Sole valley, near his village in Caldes, in the Trentino region, on Wednesday when he was fatally mauled.

Local media have identified the jogger as 26-year-old Andrea Papi.

His mauled body was found by a search team, hours after his girlfriend reported him missing.

Trentino region's president, Maurizio Fugatti, said the bear that killed Papi would be identified and killed.

Alpine brown bears are endangered species in the province of Trentino and were reintroduced to the area by an EU programme between 1996 – 2004.

It's believed there are around 100 bears now in the province.

Some animal rights organisations have condemned the decision to identify and kill the bear.

Legambiente, an environmental association, said it's the country's first lethal attack in 150 years, adding there shouldn't be a "witch hunt" against the animals in general.

In March, another man was attacked by a bear in the same region.

A man is recovering in hospital after being mauled by a crocodile near a remote Queensland campground.

The 44-year-old man managed to save his life by fighting off the 4.5-metre reptile, jabbing it in the eyes, after it tried to drown him while he was spearfishing in Cooktown.

"It has bitten him three times and dragged him to the bottom," Valerie Noble of Queensland Ambulance Service said.

"He's managed to – according to him – stick his fingers in the crocodile's eyes multiple times and escape before swimming towards the shore."

It's understood the man was attacked near the Archer Point Camp Ground shortly before 1pm on Saturday.

Rescue crews were forced to winch the man to safety, in a difficult-to-reach area, before a helicopter took him to Cairns Hospital.

He suffered multiple fractures, as well as severe injuries to his head, abdomen and leg.

"He's an extremely lucky man, not many people would live to tell a story like that," Noble said.

The 44-year-old man remains in a stable condition and is reportedly in good spirits.

The attack prompted Peter Scott, the Cook Shire Mayor, to warn future campers to talk to the rangers before entering the water at the popular spearfishing spot.

"I would suggest that the rangers up there have a fair knowledge of what's going on, people should check in with them before they camp and start swimming around," he said.

The Department of Environment and Science, Queensland will investigate the attack and confirm if the crocodile is still in the area.

A Salvation Army store in Adelaide was left in a mess after thieves rummaged through donations left outside the store.

It's meant that this Easter weekend, volunteers will be picking up the mess left behind by the thieves who rummaged through and then stole from the donations.

Volunteers at the charity store in Aberfoyle Park said many items will end up having to be thrown out due to their condition in the aftermath.

They note that donations left outside the store during holidays often get damaged or stolen.

However, the store's manager, Elaine Laboure, said incidents like these can be avoided.

"We really appreciate the people that donate, but please do it when we're open," she told 9News.

Volunteer Corinne Simpson said incidents like this are devastating for the volunteers.

"Something like this, it just breaks your heart, it really does," she said.

"It's a lot of work and generally our volunteers are older so it's a lot for them to go through. "

It is unclear who stole the donations.
