Woman bitten by blue-ringed octopus after picking up shell

A woman was bitten by a blue-ringed octopus after she picked up a shell when she was swimming at a beach on Sydney's Lower North Shore.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was bitten twice on the stomach after the highly-venomous octopus fell out of the shell at Chinamans Beach in Mosman about 2.45pm today.

"The patient was experiencing some abdominal pain around the bite site so paramedics applied pressure and a cold compress before taking her to hospital to be monitored and treated for further symptoms," NSW Ambulance inspector Christian Holmes said.

EXPLAINER: Everything you ned to know about the blue-ringed octopus

The blue-ringed octopus which bit a Sydney woman was caught by paramedics on a Mosman beach.

"A blue-ringed octopus bite is a rare call for us but they are extremely venomous."

The blue-ringed octopus is prevalent in rocky parts of Sydney beaches and along the east coast.

They range from the size of a finger to the size of a fist, with species in northern Western Australia tending to be bigger.

Normally they do not bite unless they are threatened or taken out of their environment.

The blue colour only becomes easily visible when they are threatened, most of the time they look like regular brown octopuses.

Despite being very deadly and very common, deaths from blue-rings are very rare.

In Australia there have been three recorded deaths in the past century.

The woman was taken to the Royal North Shore Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Her mother gave evidence in Hayne's third trial over the allegation in the NSW District Court on Thursday.

She was at their suburban Newcastle home alternating between watching the 2018 NRL Grand Final in her lounge room and ironing in her bedroom on the night of the alleged assault.

The woman said she heard a knock on the door and assumed it was a friend of her daughter.

The pair shared a home after she was released from hospital the previous month.

"She couldn't drive. Her friends would visit her," the woman said.

"Sometimes they'd come out and talk to me but she had her privacy."

The woman described a conversation she had with her daughter on the night of the alleged assault.

Former NRL player Jarryd Hayne arrives at the Downing Centre District Court in Sydney.

"She said: 'I think he wants to have sex' and she said 'and there's no way,'" the woman said.

"And I said, 'that's right, no', and I walked back up the hall."

Hayne later came into the lounge room.

"The grand final had just finished and he called out, quite loud: 'go the Roosters', 'I'm jealous'," the woman said.

The woman's daughter later knocked on her mother's bedroom door, telling her Hayne had left because he had a nosebleed.

"The next day she came and said she needed to talk to me," the woman said.

She showed her mother pictures showing injuries to her genitalia.

"What did she tell you?" Crown prosecutor John Sfinas asked the woman.

She recalled her daughter saying Hayne was "forceful" and "persistent", describing him pulling her pants down.

Her daughter thought Hayne may have bitten her, the woman said.

Hayne's barrister Margaret Cunneen SC told the jury on the first day of his trial the woman had helped him remove items of her clothing, and the sex acts her performed on her were consensual.

"There was no sex in the way both the complainant and Hayne thought of the term 'having sex'," Cunneen said.

The trial before Judge Graham Turnbull continues.
