Luxurious new FIFO accommodation aims to attract women to mining jobs

A West Australian mining company is reinventing fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) working by building two new luxury accommodation precincts to attract female workers and "prioritise health and wellbeing".

Mineral Resources, also known as MinRes, is creating the hotel-style homes in the outback which it says are triple the size of the rooms staff usually have.

A total of 750 resort-style rooms will be built at its Onslow Iron project in the Pilbara, with each spanning 45 square metres.

Usually, mining workers stay in temporary accommodation units called dongas.

But the new apartment-like rooms will have a queen size bed, separate ensuite, laundry with washer and dryer, kitchenette, lounge, big screen TV with video call function and a balcony.

Barbecues, an Olympic-size swimming pool, fitness centre, café serving barista-made coffee and a recreation building with cinema, golf simulators and pool tables, as well as sports courts, are also being built.

Couples are also being targeted to take on a FIFO job and families will be encouraged to relocate to ten new four-bed homes in Onslow, which is 14 hours' drive north of Perth.

MinRes Chief People and Shared Services Officer Bronwyn Grieve said the company wants to attract more workers.

"Our people are the foundation of MinRes' success and that's why we'll give them the best FIFO village experience in the sector," Grieve said.

"As the race to attract and retain the best talent intensifies, we know our focus on workplace wellness will help set us apart."

Daughter of ex-ATO official guilty over role in massive tax fraud

The daughter of a former deputy commissioner for the tax office has been found guilty over her role in a massive tax fraud.

Lauren Anne Cranston was found guilty of conspiring to cause a loss to the Commonwealth and conspiring to deal with the proceeds of crime worth more than $1 million for her role in the Plutus Payroll scandal.

She was arrested along with her older brother Adam Cranston and several others in 2017.

Lauren Cranston departs the Supreme Court in Darlinghurst where they are accused of being involved in a 105 million tax fraud conspiracy.

Following an NSW Supreme Court trial that began in April 2022, the jury was sent to deliberate on their verdict in mid-January.

They returned the two guilty verdicts on Monday afternoon.

The sound of tears filled the court after Cranston learned of the guilty verdict.

She will remain on bail until an application for her detention on Tuesday.

Three other co-accused were found guilty last week.

The jury is still considering the verdict for a fourth.

Jurors in the lengthy trial were told the Plutus financial services group withheld tax from the Australian Taxation Office using a number of second-tier companies.

The fraudulently obtained money funded lavish lifestyles including fast cars, planes and real estate.

The jury was told Cranston, whose only other professional experience was working at a supermarket, once fought with her older brother about purchasing a Hyundai she wanted, because he wanted to buy her a Porsche.

Adam Cranston would use his father Michael Cranston, who was deputy commissioner of the ATO at the time, to find out whether the tax office knew about their scheme, the jury heard.

The five accused denied their guilt, variously pointing the blame at each other and saying they thought the company Plutus, which was named after the Greek god of abundance and wealth, was a legitimate enterprise.

'She is not in trouble': Woman and son missing on the Gold Coast

A woman and her young son remain missing two days after they left a Gold Coast address on foot.

Jessica Mostyn, 32, and her four-year-old son left a property in Labrador just before 5pm on Saturday after an argument with a person known to them, police said.

Jessica does not have a phone or car so police believe she is likely to reach out to the public for help.

"Jessica is unlikely to see this message, but if she does I want her to know she is not in trouble and we just want to check on her and her son to make sure they are okay," Acting Detective Inspector Greg Aubort said.

"She is urged to come forward to a hospital or police station for help and I know our community here will guide her appropriately if she approaches them."

He said Jessica's family and loved ones share their concerns and want to see the pair home safely.

"This appeal is all about making sure she and her son are safe – especially with the heavy rains and damp conditions we're experiencing here," he said.

Jessica has a fully shaved head but is known to wear a variety of wigs. She was last seen wearing a blue hoodie with maroon sweat pants.

She is described as Caucasian, 164cm tall, with a medium build.

Her son is described as Caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes last seen wearing blue and orange shorts with no shirt or shoes.
