Witness told men 'looking after' bashed murder victim

Passing motorists were told slain western Sydney man Ross Houllis had too much to drink or was on drugs when they stopped to check on him in a suburban street.

Ross Houllis, 28, was bashed on Valentine's Day 2020 and died in hospital three days later.

Abdul Karaali has pleaded not guilty to murder, denying involvement in the attack preceding Houllis' death.

Ross Houllis, 28, was bashed on Valentine's Day 2020 and died in hospital three days later.

A woman who called Triple Zero said the two men she saw involved in an attack on a third did not participate equally.

"One of them was kind of standing back a bit and one was doing more kicking," she said.

She could not distinguish between the men but after being shown her original statement she said the man with the "bigger build" did more.

A man driving past the scene at Wakeley in Sydney's west with his wife told the court he stopped to ask if Houllis was OK after seeing him lying in the street.

The Crown alleges Houllis was set up as "revenge" for selling a fake pair of Apple AirPods to another man who brought Karaali in on the plan.

He said a man came up to the driver's side window of their Toyota Tarago and told him they were "looking after" Houllis.

"They said he was on drugs and 'we're looking after him' and 'you can go'," the man told the court on Thursday.

His wife recalled hearing from the passenger seat Houllis was "drunk, had too much to drink".

CCTV shown to the court during Karaali's trial captures a man being bashed, stomped on and dragged by two other men.

Karaali's barrister Irving Wallach has told the jury his client does not appear on the footage and the "poor quality images" taken from a number of CCTV cameras would not convince them beyond reasonable doubt that he does.

"The prosecution's evidence on its whole is of poor quality," Wallach said on Wednesday.

The Crown alleges Houllis was set up as "revenge" for selling a fake pair of Apple AirPods to another man who brought Karaali in on the plan.

The trial is set to resume next week.

Journalists break down reporting on shootings of colleagues

A US journalist has broken down while reporting on the gut-wrenching news her colleague had been murdered and another injured while covering an earlier shooting.

"This is extremely devastating for all of us," Spectrum News 13 reporter Celeste Springer said in the raw coverage following the shooting of two journalists in Orlando, Florida

The photographer and reporter had been responding to news of the alleged murder of a woman in her 20s when the 19-year-old accused gunman opened fire on their car, then shot a mother and daughter, killing the nine-year-old girl.

US reporters break down in tears as they talk about colleague being shot in Florida.

Keith Melvin Moses was charged with the earlier murder and is expected to be charged over the further shootings.

"Please, please say a prayer tonight for our co-worker who is in critical condition," Springer said.

"This is every reporter's absolutely worst nightmare," WESH-TV reporter Luana Munoz said in tears.

"I apologise this is really difficult to cover.

"We go home at night afraid that something like this will occur."

"I don't have the words," Rebecca Turco, one of Spectrum News 13's journalists, tweeted Wednesday evening.

"We still have so many questions tonight but even if we get answers, they won't make it make sense."

"Praying our other team member will be okay," Turco added. "Please keep our crew's families in your thoughts."

Sheriff John Mina said Moses has a "lengthy criminal history" including "gun charges, aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and grand theft".

Mina said deputies responded to the 6100 block of Hialeah Street around 11am on Wednesday local time where they located a woman in her 20s who was shot and succumbed to her injuries.

Keith Melvin Moses, 19, has been arrested and charged with murder.

Detectives responded and collected evidence, he said.

"At 4.05, we received 911 calls about another shooting at that location and a shooting nearby," Mina said.

Mina said the two journalists – a photographer and reporter – were on the scene to cover the homicide that morning and were shot in or around their vehicle.

According to witnesses, a man approached the news vehicle and opened fire, hitting the two reporters.

The man then walked to a nearby home and shot the mother and daughter.

Mina said it is unclear why the suspect entered that home.

"We really don't know what was in the mind of this suspect," Mina said.

"Hopefully at some point that he'll talk to us about what his motives were."

Investigators also are looking into whether the suspect – who the sheriff says has a lengthy criminal history – knew that the Spectrum News 13 employees were members of the media.

Officials said they believe Moses had no connection to the journalists or the mother and her daughter.

Keith Melvin Moses is expected to be charged over the murder of a US TV reporter.

Spectrum News 13's parent company, Charter Communications, released a statement following the attack.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and the other lives senselessly taken today," the statement reads.

"Our thoughts are with our employee's family, friends and co-workers during this very difficult time. We remain hopeful that our other colleague who was injured makes a full recovery. This is a terrible tragedy for the Orlando community."

"It is with deep sadness that @RTDNA learns of the death of a @MyNews13 journalist in Orlando," Radio Television Digital News Association CEO Dan Shelley tweeted.

"He was 1 of 2 of the station's journalists shot covering a previous crime in a residential area. Sending thoughts of peace and comfort to their families, friends & the other victims."

Mina said they don't immediately have a motive for any of the shootings.

Mongols bikie shot in head and chest was revenge attack, jury told

The shooting of a Mongols bikie in the head was a revenge attack by members of the rival Finks gang, jurors have been told.

Finks bikies Sione Hokafonu and Poiva Sita are standing trial for the attempted murder of Mongol bikie Rocco Curra, who was shot four times in the head and chest.

Hokafonu is accused of being one of two shooters who fired 11 or 12 times at Curra, as he sat in a car on a suburban street.

Poiva Sita (left) and Joseph Opapo arrive at the Supreme Court in Melbourne

He was allegedly trapped into believing he was meeting a woman he had met over Instagram that evening, August 1, 2019.

Sita is alleged to have driven the gunmen to and from the scene. His brother, Joseph Opapo, is alleged to have driven a second getaway car and has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence.

Lawyers for the three men deny their clients were involved, and say the case is based on the evidence of another man whose testimony should be scrutinised.

Peter Morrissey KC, for Hokafonu, said he would suggest that man, who cannot be identified, was actually one of the shooters himself.

Footage played to jurors showed a silver BMW parked in front of Curra's car before two men jump out and fire a series of shots into the vehicle, which struck him four times.

Sione Hokafonu arrives at the Supreme Court in Melbourne

It's alleged the attack on Mr Curra was a revenge attack by the Finks Motorcycle Gang, prosecutor Neill Hutton told jurors in Victoria's Supreme Court on Thursday.

He alleged it was in retribution for the shooting of Hokafonu in the foot days earlier.

That incident was apparently in retaliation for an earlier incident at a shopping centre pub when a Mongols associate had his "Support Your Local Mongols" jumper taken by members of the Finks as a "trophy" after a scuffle.

When asked later why Curra had been shot, Hokafonu allegedly told an associate "blood for blood".

Curra tried to drive away but crashed into a tree. He staggered into a property and residents called police.

"He's very lucky to survive," Hutton said.

Marieka Tirikos had been driving past and provided first aid to Curra, asking him questions to keep him conscious until emergency services arrived.

"I asked if he knew who had shot him and he said he didn't," she said.

At a meeting of the Finks the following day, the shooting of Curra was generally celebrated by members who believed he had been killed, Hutton alleged.

Jurors heard Curra had been lured to the Bulleen street under the belief he was meeting a woman who had reached out to him over Instagram.

It's alleged Curra was set up only because he was a member of the Mongols.

After the shooting, the stolen silver BMW allegedly carrying Hokafonu and Sita was set on fire and they were driven away in a second BMW.

Hutton said a gun used in the shooting was found in Hokafonu's possession five months later.

Another man, Tavita Sua, is also accused of being a second gunman and his case is being heard separately.

Moment car smashes through fence in Melbourne captured on CCTV

CCTV has captured the moment two cars smashed through a fence and into a parked car in Melbourne's north.

The incident is thought to have started out as a road road fight before it quickly turned a quiet suburban street into a demolition derby.

The driver of a white Mercedes ute is seen tailgating a blue Mazda hatchback before they both plough into a fence on McFarlane Crescent in Epping just before 12pm last Wednesday.
