NSW Liberal MP disendorsed for sharing explicit photos of colleague

The NSW Liberal Party has kicked upper house MP Peter Poulos off its ticket for the upcoming state election after he admitted he shared explicit photos of a colleague around five years ago.

Poulos has apologised for sharing the modelling images of Hawkesbury MP Robyn Preston to a fellow Liberal member during a preselection battle, but on Saturday afternoon was formally disendorsed by the party for next month's election.

"This afternoon, the state director, in consultation with the state president, exercised campaign powers to suspend Peter Poulos from the NSW Division for a period of six months," a Liberal spokesperson said.

"The effect of the suspension is that Mr Poulos is disendorsed as a Liberal candidate for the Legislative Council at the coming election.

"While Mr Poulos has apologised for his actions to the person concerned and to the community, his conduct fell short of the standard of behaviour expected of members of our party.

"The Party will promptly fill the vacancy on the ticket in line with the requirements of our Constitution."

Although Premier Dominic Perrottet had backed Poulos earlier this week, saying on Tuesday that "people make mistakes", on Saturday he changed tack and called for the Liberal Party to take action against him.

"They need to look at that matter," Perrottet told reporters.

"It's a matter for the party. I've made it very clear today, very clear, as I was back then. When those images, from many years ago by a choice that she made, were brought up to damage her, (it was) completely horrific, vulgar and wrong."

Poulos's disendorsement comes just a day after former Finance Minister Damien Tudehope was forced to resign from cabinet after admitting he held shares in tolling giant Transurban while in office.

The Liberals have not yet announced a replacement for Poulos on their upper house ticket for the state election, which will be held on March 25.

Sweltering Sunday on the cards nation-wide

Temperatures are set to cool across the country on Sunday, but don't expect too much respite from the heat.

Sydney has a forecast top of 27 degrees, after reaching 38 in the western suburbs on Saturday – approaching potentially record-breaking temperatures.

The weather was five to 10 degrees above average for the time of year throughout the day.

Bondi Beach is already busy this morning as Sydney prepares for a scorcher.

But it could be a stormy end to the day for the east and north of the state as clouds gather.

Fires meanwhile broke out in Victoria as the state sweltered, with warnings current for Northwood, Moornapa, Toolome, Woolenook, Glenmore, Ingliston, and Rowsley.

South Australian firefighters have brought a blaze at Port Lincoln under control, but tomorrow Adelaide is set for a top of 31C.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said the heatwave was continuing to impact parts of the east, including New South Wales and southern Queensland.

"There is still a heatwave warning current for SA, NSW and Victoria," Bradbury told Weekend Today.

Heatwave conditions eased in Victoria as the cool change sets in.

Melbourne is set for a top of 27 degrees on Sunday.

"Over the west of the country we have broad areas of severe intensity heatwave conditions impacting Western Australia, this has been ongoing for a number of days and is likely to continue for a number of days to come," Bradbury said.

Fire weather warnings are in place for the NSW Southern Ranges as well as parts of central Australia including the Lasseter and Alice Springs districts.

"Summer is when we have our most intense heat and most intense storms and potentially most significant rainfall systems," she said.

"Australia is a country of extremes and this summer is really demonstrating that."

On Sunday, Sydney is forecast to be 27 degrees, Melbourne 27, Brisbane 31, Perth 33, Adelaide 31, Hobart 28, Canberra 31 and Darwin 33.
