Video shows struggle for hammer during Pelosi attack

Video released publicly shows the husband of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fighting with his assailant for control of a hammer moments before he was struck during a brutal attack in the couple's San Francisco home last year.

The body-camera footage shows suspect David DePape wrest the tool from Paul Pelosi, 82, and lunge toward him with the hammer over his head.

The blow to Pelosi occurs out of the camera's view and the officers — one of them cursing — rush into the house and jump on DePape.

Pelosi, apparently unconscious, can be seen lying face down on the floor in his pajama top and underwear.

Officials later said he woke up in a pool of his own blood.

The release comes after a coalition of news agencies, including The Associated Press, sought access to the evidence that prosecutors played in open court last month.

The San Francisco District Attorney's Office had refused to make the exhibits available to journalists.

A state court judge ruled this week there was no reason to keep the video secret.

The evidence includes portions of Paul Pelosi’s 911 call on October 28, as well as video from Capitol police surveillance cameras, a body camera worn by one of the two police officers who arrived first at the house and a nearly 18-minute audio recording from DePape’s interview with police.

The Capitol Police video shows DePape walk up to a glass-panel door shortly after 2am, leave and then return wearing a large backpack and carrying two other bags.

He set the items down and pulled out a hammer, pausing to put on gloves, and used it to smash the door glass so he could step through an opening.

DePape has pleaded not guilty in ongoing state and federal cases. He is being jailed without bail.

He faces charges including attempted murder, elder abuse, and assaulting an immediate family member of a federal official.

San Francisco Deputy Public Defender Adam Lipson, who represents DePape, called the video's release a “terrible mistake” in a statement Friday.

“The footage is inflammatory and could feed unfounded theories about this case, and we are extremely concerned about DePape’s ability to get a fair trial," Lipson said.

Members of Congress have faced a sharp rise in threats in the two years since the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol.

During the January 6 attack, rioters chanted menacingly for the speaker as they rampaged through the halls trying to halt certification of Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in the presidential election.

One man was convicted this week of eight criminal counts after he put his feet on a desk in Pelosi’s office and left a note to her punctuated with a sexist expletive.

Paul Pelosi was asleep at the couple’s home when DePape — who was 42 at the time, roughly half Pelosi's age — allegedly broke in.

Nancy Pelosi was in Washington at the time and under the protection of her security detail, which does not extend to family members.

Her husband later underwent surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands.

He has since appeared in public wearing a hat and a glove to cover his wounds.

Speaking at the US Capitol after the release, Nancy Pelosi said she had not watched or listened to any of it.

“I have not heard the 911 call. I have not heard the confession. I have not seen the break-in. And I have absolutely no intention of seeing the deadly assault on my husband,” she said.

Pelosi said her husband “is making progress, but it will take more time."

San Francisco Officer Kolby Wilmes' body-camera video begins with officers approaching the brick home and rapping on the door.

It takes about 20 seconds for the door to open and during that time, the officers discuss whether they have the right house.

When the door opens, Paul Pelosi says, “Hi, guys, how are you?”

Both men are facing the officers at the door. Initially, the hammer is in the shadows and it takes about five seconds before a flashlight shows DePape holding the handle of a hammer with his right hand and clutching Pelosi’s right hand, which is gripping around the hammer head, with his left hand.

The struggle is not apparent in the first few seconds.

“What’s going on, man?” the officer asks.

“Everything’s good,” DePape replies.

“Drop the hammer,” the officer says.

DePape says no and begins to pull it from Pelosi’s grip. Pelosi says, “Hey, hey".

DePape wins control of the hammer and winds up with his right and delivers a vicious overhand blow as Pelosi disappears out of view and officers rush in.

The officers called for backup as they struggled with DePape and Pelosi was lying on the ground.

In an interview with San Francisco Police officer Carla Hurley after he was taken into custody, DePape said he didn’t regret the attack even though it was not on Nancy Pelosi, his intended target.

Surprised to find Paul Pelosi in the home, DePape described most of their encounter as "pretty amicable,” but said he attacked him with the hammer because he was on a mission.

DePape said the attack happened very quickly and he recalled how it took the officers by surprise.

“I yank the hammer away from him, I jump into action,” he said with excitement in his voice.

“They jump into action. They’re like on top of me instantly.”

DePape said he didn’t remember how many times he struck Pelosi, but said it was with “full force".

DePape told Hurley he was going after Nancy Pelosi for lying to the American public and that he planned to hold her hostage for her crimes.

He believed the discredited conspiracy that Democrats stole the 2020 election from Trump.

He said he planned to hold her hostage and would “break her kneecaps" if she lied.

When Hurley asked why DePape did not leave when he realized Nancy Pelosi wasn’t home and the police were on the way, he compared himself to the Founding Fathers, explaining that he refused to surrender.

The US Capitol Police investigated nearly 10,000 threats to members last year, more than twice the number from four years earlier.

The department faced heavy criticism in the aftermath of the attack on Paul Pelosi.

The agency has access to about 1,800 cameras, including one on the couple's house that was not being monitored during the attack because the speaker was not there.

Public officials across the US, from local school board members to election workers, have also endured harassment and intimidation.

This month, a former Republican candidate for a state House seat in New Mexico was arrested in a series of shootings targeting the homes or offices of elected Democratic officials and a Kansas man was convicted of threatening a GOP congressman.

But Imogen later died there in what family friends called an "unthinkable tragedy", earlier this month.

"Despite Sam's heroic efforts, ringing an ambulance, the help of a passerby and eventually driving Imogen to the hospital herself (the ambulance was too far away to make it in time) beautiful Imogen passed away later at the hospital," family friend Tamara Harrison wrote on a fundraising page.

"To make sense of such a tragic loss in such a way is inconceivable, there are no words that could accurately describe how shattered Imogen's family are.

"It is impossible to Imagine life without Imogen."

Tributes called Imogen a "bright, bubbly and beautiful" little girl.

Imogen's funeral, which aims to be "a fitting celebration of her short life" is due to be held today.

Retirees who had motor home stolen gifted new trailer

A retired couple from Adelaide has been gifted a brand new trailer today by a local business after thieves stole their original motor home.

The trailer is worth $35,000 and includes a GPS tracker, which can help the couple locate it if it is ever stolen.

Sue and Tony Hill had returned home from a trip around Australia to visit family when the trailer was stolen from their daughter's home in Munno Para, North Adelaide, on Tuesday morning.

A retired couple from Adelaide have lost everything after thieves stole their campervan home, which held a life's worth of personal items and savings.

"I came out about 7.30 and it was gone, some lowlife took our home," Sue said.

"Our life has just been ripped out from under us.

The pair had used their retirement savings to buy the vehicle to travel around Australia.

Now, the couple can breathe easy after they were given a replacement to settle into.

"We'd given up hope that we'd ever get back on the road again, which is what we love doing. We'd given up hope that we'd ever get out camper trailer back," Sue said.

The owner of the business, Eagle Camper Trailers, said he had to help once he heard their story.

"I heard it, I watched it and I thought 'I can't believe this'," Brent said.

"The fact that someone had taken their home, I needed to try and do something to sort it out."

The trailer's insurance had expired weeks before it was taken, leaving the owners with nothing to show for their retirement dream.

The family turned to social media in hopes that "people power" will help track down the stolen trailer, however, it is still yet to be found.

"I've been on the truckie pages trying to get the truckies of Australia to help," Sue and Tony's daughter Janene Harper said.

"Through COVID and the rental crisis, they lived homeless for more than 12 months," she said, on the fundraiser.

"They decided to invest every last dollar they had to purchase a portal home, something they could call home.

"They were required to sell most of their belongings to be able to move in."

Hunt for man accused of conning businesses out of thousands

An accused serial fraudster who allegedly posed as a fake deliveryman has conned more than a dozen Melbourne businesses out of almost $14,000.

Victoria police named their suspect, Mark Filiti, in a bid to track him down after he allegedly scammed at least 17 victims out of $14,000 between December 11 and January 21.

There is currently a warrant out for his arrest, police said.

Mark Filiti is wanted for arrest for allegedly posing as a delivery driver and stealing money.

"We will get him it's just a matter of time," detective senior constable Amanda Wright said.

"Mark, if you're out there, hand yourself in because we'll get you."

He has allegedly targeted businesses from cafes, bakeries, ice cream stores, and bottle shops.

"His behaviour is brazen and disgusting," Wright said.

Police have been told in most of the incidents, Filiti claims he has a delivery of goods to make however requires payment before he can give them their items.

He also allegedly tries to sell goods at bargain prices but requires payment upfront.

Once the victims hand over the cash, between $100 and $2500, Filiti allegedly leaves, saying he'll get the items for delivery before taking off.

The first incident was on December 11 when $1800 was taken from a woman at a private residence at St Albans.

"The first victim handed over $1800 that was meant for presents," Wright said.

The next was when $200 was taken from a bottle shop in Sydenham on December 18.

"My son called me and said somebody has stock from you. I said we don't buy stock from anyone else, we have our own supply," Amarjit Sohi the manager said.

"He said I'm talking to your dad… and he says to give me whatever's in the till."

On December 21, Filiti allegedly took $100 from the Croix Croissant bakery in Flemington after he demanded the cash in exchange for a fake coffee bean delivery from a cafe.

"The guy actually started yelling and threatening when he asked for the money," Riska the Croix Crossant baker manager said.

Days later, $2500 was taken from a shop in Werribee.

On January 4, $2000 was stolen from a fish and chip shop in Portarlington and on January 8, $1300 from a fast-food outlet in Pakenham.

These are just a few of the dozens of alleged bogus delivery for cash incidents across Victoria over the past two months.

Investigators carried out a search warrant at Filiti's registered home at Burnside Heights.

Filiti's estranged family then reportedly called him and he immediately hung up.

He has been on the run ever since.

Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is urged to contact police.

Teen allegedly abducted in Adelaide, escapes at an intersection

A teenager was walking along a South Australian road when a group of men allegedly drove beside him and abducted him.

The 17-year-old was walking along the Esplanade at Somerton Park, in Glenelg, when he noticed a white sedan driving slowly behind and heard the voice of two men.

Detective Inspector Kieran Baggoley said one of the men asked whether the teenager wanted a lift to which he declined.

Detective Inspector Kieran Baggoley addresses the alleged abduction of a teenager while he was walking along a street.

"Again, the occupants of the car have asked if he wanted a lift and the boy has declined repeatedly," Baggoley said.

The car allegedly stopped and two men got out and asked the teenager a third time whether he wanted a lift to which the boy said no.

"The two men have then forcibly pushed the boy into the car and have driven off," Baggoley said.

There were four men in the car not known to the 17-year-old boy.

The boy could describe two of the four men, believed to be in their 30s to early 40s.

The first man is of Caucasian appearance, about 190 cm tall, with a large build and stocky.

He had a full black beard with a large amount of grey in it and was wearing a dark grey hoodie.

The second man is also of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm with a muscular build.

He was wearing a white beanie and an orange t-shirt.

Baggoley said the car drove along the Esplanade for two minutes before arriving at an intersection.

Throughout the car ride the men did not speak to the boy "despite the boy repeatedly asking to get out of the car".

"He was not physically hurt in the car, he was not verbally threatened or robbed," Baggoley said.

When the car stopped at traffic at an intersection the boy got out of the car and ran away.

"The men did not pursue him and he was able to go home and his parents contacted police," Baggoley said.

The motive for the alleged abduction remains unclear.

He has also asked the men involved to come forward.

"We don't know why you've done this… we've got a 17-year-old boy who has been grabbed on the side of the road, and until we have an explanation as to why, we will report this matter as seriously," he added.

Video shows 'freak' moment lightning strikes boy on NSW beach

The shocking moment lightning struck an eight-year-old boy on a beach on the New South Wales South Coast has been captured on camera.

The storm had been brewing in the distance in the late afternoon, witness Simon Young said, but it wasn't until an "almighty crack" rang out and a family rushed to the side of the young boy that he realised what had happened.

"It was just like a shock out of nowhere and at the time I looked out to the inlet and everyone was unaware of what had occurred," Young told 9News.

"A young child just fell to the ground in the water and his family and siblings ran to his aid to grab him as fast as possible."

The schoolboy was dragged to the sand and Shellharbour Surf Life Savers immediately responded.

He said he could not commend Shellharbour Surf Life Savers enough for their "immediate response".

Lifeguard Byron Vinkovic was first on the scene and said he was "really proud" of his team for the care they gave the boy before he was taken to Sydney's Westmead Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

"We had been monitoring a storm cell that was moving over Wollongong but still hadn't reached us yet," Vinkovic told 9News.

"All six lifeguards did an absolutely amazing job. It was a rapid response from lifeguards and emergency services.

"I could not praise them enough."

The boy had scars and burns on his chest when he was pulled unconscious and not breathing from the water.

Fellow lifeguard Chris Holme said it was a "one in a million" situation.

"All our hearts go out to the young boy and their family and hope they are on the road to recovery."

Liberal senator Linda Reynolds sues Brittany Higgins' fiancé

Federal Liberal senator Linda Reynolds is suing David Sharaz, Brittany Higgins' fiancé, for defamation over two tweets posted last year.

In documents filed by Reynolds' lawyers in the Western Australian Supreme Court, it is claimed Sharaz made two tweets in 2022 – one on January 27, the other on December 4 – that are "falsely defamatory".

Reynolds is seeking damages, including aggravated damages, and for Sharaz to foot the legal costs for the proceedings.
