Suspect charged with murder in assassination of former Japanese president

Japanese prosecutors formally charged the suspect in the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with murder, sending him to stand trial, a Japanese court said on Friday.

Tetsuya Yamagami was arrested immediately after allegedly shooting Abe with a homemade gun as the former leader was making a campaign speech in July outside a train station in Nara in western Japan.

Later that month, Yamagami was sent to an Osaka detention centre for a nearly six-month mental evaluation, which ended Tuesday. Yamagami is back in police custody in Nara.

Prosecutors said the results of his mental evaluation showed he is fit to stand trial.

Yamagami was also charged with violating a gun control law, according to the Nara District Court.

Police have said Yamagami told them that he killed Abe, one of Japan's most influential and divisive politicians, because of Abe's apparent links to a religious group that he hated.

In his statements and in social media postings attributed to him, Yamagami said he developed a grudge because his mother had made massive donations to the Unification Church that bankrupted his family and ruined his life.

One of his lawyers, Masaaki Furukawa, told the Associated Press on Thursday that Yamagami was in good health during his mental evaluation in Osaka when he was only allowed to see his sister and three lawyers.

Furukawa said his trial is a serious case and involves a jury panel of citizens. Due to the complexity of the case, it would take at least several months before his trial begins, he said.

Police are also reportedly considering adding several allegations, including weapons production, violation of explosives control law and causing damage to buildings.

Some Japanese have expressed sympathy for Yamagami, especially those who also suffered as children of followers of the South Korea-based Unification Church, which is known for pressuring adherents into making big donations and is considered a cult in Japan.

Thousands of people have signed a petition requesting leniency for Yamagami, and others have sent care packages to his relatives or the detention centre.

The investigation into the case has led to revelations of years of cozy ties between Abe's governing Liberal Democratic Party and the church since Abe's grandfather, former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, helped the church take root in Japan in the 1960s over shared interests in conservative and anti-communist causes.

Current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's popularity has plunged over his handling of the church controversy and for insisting on holding a rare, controversial state funeral for Abe.

Perth man jailed for burning toddler with boiling water

A Perth man has been jailed after burning a two-year-old girl by placing her hands in boiling water while in his care.

Jaycob Yarran, 25, was found guilty of deliberately placing the toddler's hands in a pot of boiling water while looking after her and her older sister at a Maddington home in 2019.

The child suffered third-degree burns to her hands.

Police allege Jaycob Yarran, 22, used a cigarette lighter to inflict burns on a toddler's limbs and torso.

Rather than calling an ambulance, a court heard he put the girl under a cold shower to ease her burns.

Yarran denied deliberately harming the child and claimed her injuries were from knocking over a bowl of hot two-minute noodles.

He was also accused of inflicting cigarette burns to the child's body and face but was acquitted of that charge.

Judge Alan Troy sentenced Yarran to five years behind bars over the attack today.

He will be eligible for parole in three years.

Jaycob Yarran sentenced over burning Perth toddler.

"You subjected her to excruciating pain," Troy told Yarran during sentencing.

"She was exceptionally vulnerable. I find you must have known how painful it would have been… you used boiling water as a weapon.

"This was completely unjustified, fortuitous violence.

"You show no remorse… and didn't call an ambulance to protect yourself."

The court heard the now six-year-old suffers nightmares, often screaming "please don't touch me, get away" and requires ongoing surgery, including skin grafts and scar stretching.

"I don't know where justice is, he'll be out in two years and my granddaughter will be scarred for life," the girl's grandfather said outside court.

Yarran's family plans to appeal today's sentencing.

Surgeon banned after carrying out 2000 'incomplete' procedures

A surgeon responsible for carrying out about 2000 "incomplete" colonoscopies near the NSW-Victoria border has been banned from practising medicine.

The ban has been declared on the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency website the day after Safer Care Victoria announced about 2000 patients may have received inaccurate diagnoses from colonoscopies supervised or performed by the doctor.

Many of those patients will now have to have a repeat colonoscopy.

Dr Liu-Ming Schmidt carried out the "incomplete" procedures between 2018 and 2022 at Albury Wodonga Health, Albury Wodonga Private Hospital and Insight Private Hospital, as identified by a recent investigation into her work.

Her Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency registration was updated this morning to say she was "not to practise medicine".

Albury mother Siobham Horsfall, who had a colonoscopy at Albury Base Hospital in 2019, has spoken in support of the action against Schmidt.

"I think she should have her licence revoked and the book thrown at her 'cause it's just not good enough," the mum said.

"It's very alarming and doesn't give us much faith in the local health system."

Horsfall cannot recall if Schmidt was her doctor and has been calling the health hotline to try and get answers.

In a coronial inquest separate to the incomplete colonoscopies, Schmidt is being investigated over a fatal surgery on the wrong end of a man's colon in 2019.

"She was quiet and kind. I got to hang with her and Priscilla a little bit and it was just lovely," he said.

"A few years ago I got to interview her and she was open and wonderful.

"We talked about having famous parents. She was graceful in her responses and so warm. Her guard dropped for a few minutes.

"I thanked her and left. It was lovely to have those moments with her."

Fellow musicians Garbage and The Misfits both shared their heartbreak.

"Utterly devastated to learn of the hideously premature death of a surprisingly sweet, fierce, generous, talented and painfully vulnerable Lisa Marie Presley," Garbage wrote on Twitter.

"I will treasure you always in my heart girl. Thank you for your kindness. May you now be granted peace."

American actress Leah Remini said the death had left her "heartbroken".

"Lisa did not have an easy life, as some might think," she said.

"May she be at peace, resting with her son and father now."

Priscilla earlier confirmed Lisa Marie had been rushed to hospital.

"She is now receiving the best care. Please keep her and our family in your prayers," Priscilla said,

In 2020, Lisa Marie's son Benjamin Keough died at 27.

Last July, she marked the second anniversary of Keough's death on Instagram, sharing a photo of their matching foot tattoos.

Previously married to Michael Lockwood, Nicolas Cage, Michael Jackson and Danny Keough, she has three other children – actress Riley Keough, Finley Aaron Love Lockwood and Harper Vivienne Ann Lockwood.

In September, Lisa Marie wrote an essay for National Grief Awareness Day, in which she opened up about the loss of her son.

"My and my three daughters' lives as we knew it were completely detonated and destroyed by his death. We live in this every. Single. Day," she wrote.

"Grief is something you will have to carry with you for the rest of your life, in spite of what certain people or our culture wants us to believe.

"You do not 'get over it,' you do not 'move on,' period."

Lisa Marie also said in the essay that she found comfort in the company of people who have faced similar tragedy, adding that her daughters help keep her going.

"I keep going for my girls," she wrote.

"I keep going because my son made it very clear in his final moments that taking care of his little sisters and looking out for them were on the forefront of his concerns and his mind. He absolutely adored them and they him."

Lisa Marie shared her father's brooding charisma and low, sultry voice and followed him professionally, releasing her own rock albums in the 2000s and even adding her voice to such Elvis recordings as In the Ghetto and Don't Cry Daddy.

"It's been all my life," she said in 2012 of her father's influence.

"It's not something that I now listen to and it's different. Although I might listen closer.

"I remain consistent on the fact that I've always been an admirer.

"He's always influenced me."

Lisa Marie Presley

Lisa Marie's birth made international news and her background was rarely far from her mind.

She lived in California with her mother, an actor known for Dallas and the Naked Gun movies, after her parents split up in 1973 but recalled early memories of her dad during her visits to Graceland.

"He was always fully, fully geared up. You'd never see him in his pyjamas coming down the steps, ever," she said in 2012.

"You'd never see him in anything but 'ready to be seen' attire."

Lisa Marie discussed being "obsessed with death at a very early age" and said she "just had a feeling" before her father died in August 1977 when she was just 12.
