Iranian schoolgirls take off hijabs as protests intensify

Protesting Iranian women are walking and dancing in the streets without their hair covered, often throwing away or burning their hijabs in remarkable scenes.

In multiple videos posted on social media platforms, protesters can be seen chanting a cry that originated with Kurdish female fighters: "Women. Life. Freedom".

The videos have been posted online despite a government-led internet crackdown, attempting to blackout coverage since large protests began to sweep the country.

Iran schoolgirls take off their hijabs in protest.

There have been mass protests for the past three weeks since the death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini.

She died in police custody after being detained by Iran's morality police.

Amini was apprehended for apparently not wearing her hijab properly.

Protesters are calling for greater freedoms and an end to the repression that binds women within the Islamic Republic.

To evade the internet blackout, Iranians are using VPNs or the Tor network to get footage of the widespread protests seen by the outside world.

Photos and videos of women removing their hijab in Iran's capital Tehran have been uploaded, along with clips of students tearing up pictures of Iran's Supreme Leader.

Videos of protesters marching down the streets of the capital with their fists in the air have captured the anger following Amini's death.

The protests have spread to universities and high schools.

In one video posted overnight, Iranian schoolgirls can be seen throwing plastic water bottles at an official, and calling out "shame on you".

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi today appealed for national unity and tried to allay anger against the country's rulers.

Raisi acknowledged that the Islamic Republic had "weaknesses and shortcomings," but repeated the official line that the unrest sparked last month by the death of Amini was nothing short of a plot by Iran's enemies.

His claims echoed those of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who blamed the United States and Israel, the country's adversaries, for inciting the unrest in his first remarks on the nationwide protests yesterday.

It's a familiar tactic for Iran's leaders, who have been mistrustful of Western influence since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Detective Inspector Andrew Massingham said yesterday up to four males and one female attended the residence and allegedly started assaulting a man who lives there.

"At that time, the male deceased was seated in his vehicle directly opposite the address. Upon seeing it occur, the deceased left his vehicle and confronted the persons in the front yard," Massingham said.

Massingham said the group was armed with at least two guns, including a shotgun and potentially a handgun.

"The male deceased was struck at very close range, and we believe the weapon involved was a 12-gauge shotgun," Massingham said.

Massingham said it's not clear how the five people involved left the scene.

"We believe possibly in a vehicle but we are desperately seeking public assistance for any person who saw movement in this area around 3.25am," he said.

Massingham revealed the resident inside the home who was allegedly assaulted, the deceased man and the offenders have "been involved in a dispute".

"It has been occurring for some time," he said.
