Dangerous conditions feared as city braces for a major deluge
Dangerous conditions are expected to hit Adelaide at the city braces for a major soaking after one of its driest summers ever.
A severe weather warning is currently in place for the West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, North West Pastoral, and parts of North East Pastoral regions in South Australia.
Thunderstorms are likely for Adelaide and parts of the state from today up until Sunday, when a slow-moving pressure system in central Australia will begin to move towards the east coast.

"Our current expectations that this weather warning here will be quite dynamic and also expand over the weekend, particularly into eastern parts of South Australia and down towards western Victoria," the Bureau of Meteorology's Jonathan How said.
The system could cause falls of up to 70mm in six hours tomorrow, and 80mm on Sunday.
Isolated totals of up to 150mm to 200mm are also possible.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that flash flooding is expected from the intense rain as a large tropical low finally shifts south over the weekend.
The state's south-east is likely to be affected, with flood warnings in place for the capital.
"Sunday night will be the main risk period for Adelaide and south-eastern parts of South Australia," How said.
"Really, depending on where this trough and low-pressure system do sit, we can see Adelaide is on the edge of that heavier rain, but we could see flash flooding developing across the city as we head into Monday morning as well."

How said that while the wet weather will be welcome for the dry parts of the state, it will also bring about new challenges.
"With heavy rain, that could lead to flash and river rain flooding and this could create dangerous travel, as well as driving conditions and number of roads and freight and trade lines are already impacted," he said.
"For some parts of the south-east, this rain will be very welcome, particularly through western parts of Victoria and south-eastern parts of South Australia, but that will come with its challenges, including top soil, which may become washed away, as well as generalised flooding right across the region."
How said the conditions will ease from Monday and then clear by Tuesday.
The system will move towards the east coast, affecting parts of Victoria and NSW.

Hundreds of Australians potentially impacted after tech giant axes 4000 jobs
The parent company of Afterpay and Square has announced it has culled 4000 jobs from its workforce around the world, potentially impacting hundreds of Australia
Block, a US-based company that also runs platforms such as Square and Cash App, made the announcement via their co-founder Jack Dorsey this morning, who claimed the changing role of AI in the industry and not financial struggles were the key motivator.
"We're not making this decision because we're in trouble," he said in a letter to staff, which was also shared on X.

Kids’ message to killer dad: ‘I forgive him but I will never forget what he did’
Lise Muliaga's five young children had every reason to fall apart after her death.
After all, it was their father Rimoni Muliaga, who took her life at their home in Melbourne's outer west.
But two-and-a-half years on, their son showed compassion and care as Muliaga faced a pre-sentence hearing in the Victorian Supreme Court.

"Please tell my dad he doesn't have to worry about us and we are thriving and serving the Lord, just like he would want," the teenager said in a statement read by senior crown prosecutor Patrick Bourke KC.
"I forgive him but I will never forget what he did."
Muliaga, 44, stabbed Lise to death in their Melton South backyard in September 2023 – months after they had moved from New Zealand and after accusing her of cheating on him with his brother.
But he denied he was guilty of murder and took the case to trial, claiming his diagnosed intellectual disability and depressive disorder impacted his reasoning.
A jury rejected those claims, convicting him of murder in December after four days of deliberations.
Eight victim impact statements were read to the court as Muliaga faced a pre-sentence hearing today.
Five came from the children he shared with Lise, ranging in age from seven to 16.

Muliaga blinked away tears as one of his young daughters described her difficulty sleeping because she kept thinking about the murder.
"I was having a bad dream," the statement read.
"Mum went to heaven and dad went to prison alone. That made me sad."
Another one of the children drew a picture depicting his mother in heaven with God and his father in jail, while another child illustrated a bloodied woman lying on the ground.
The 16-year-old son told the court the past few years had been traumatic but it made him mature and he was motivated to become a father figure to his younger siblings.
"I honestly just want to live life to the fullest," he said.
Muliaga's brother Daniel and sister-in-law Marama also provided statements to the court, with Marama showing grace.
"I want you to know I forgive you for the mess you have made," she said.
"I pray for your healing for your sake and your beautiful kids."

Defence barrister Michael McGrath accepted it was an objectively grave case, given the victim was Muliaga's wife and he used a weapon.
But Muliaga showed remorse and his moral culpability should be reduced due to his intellectual disability and depression, McGrath said.
He had limited capacity to self-regulate his emotions and the morbid jealousy he experienced at the time of the murder was a feature of his conditions, the barrister said.
Bourke argued the jealousy was separate from Muliaga's diagnoses and while his time in custody would be more difficult, his moral culpability should not be significantly moderated.
Justice James Gorton will sentence Muliaga at a later date.

Westgate parking row: Resident fined $100, then confronts AT driver parked in same place

Almost 40,000 Budget Direct customers allegedly overcharged $3.3m
More than 39,000 Budget Direct customers have allegedly been overcharged $3.3 million due to misleading advertisements, according to Australia's financial watchdog.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has launched legal action in the federal court against the insurer behind Budget Direct's products – Auto and General Services.
ASIC alleged that Auto and General Services advertised discounts up to 30 per cent for Budget Direct customers who bought a home, car or motorbike insurance policy online.

However, more than 39,000 customers lost the discount after making changes to the policy, like updating their address or changing how often they make payments, during the first year between March 2020 and July 2024, it is alleged.
They lost about $100 each and $3.3 million in total. Despite their discounts being removed, the customers allegedly continued to pay for the insurance.
ASIC alleged the ads were misleading as the customers were not told they would lose their discounts if they made any changes.
The regulator alleged Auto and General Services became aware of the issue as early as 2016 but failed to fix it or notify customers for years.
"Australians should be able to take insurers at their word, especially when it comes to discounts that influence their decision to take up a policy and compare it to other products in the market," ASIC deputy chair Sarah Court said.
"We allege Budget Direct's conduct was misleading and deprived tens of thousands of Australians millions of dollars in savings they were promised."

Auto and General Services has paid over $3.8 million in remediation, including interest, to the 39,661 affected customers but ASIC will seek declarations and civil penalties from the court.
An Auto and General Services spokesperson said it self-reported the incident to ASIC, apologised to and financially compensated the customers.
"The matter only arose when the customers made an amendment to their policy during the first year – primarily either by replacing their insured car or changing their insured address," the Auto and General Services spokesperson said.
"In the past two years, Auto and General has invested more than $70 million in improvements to its systems and processes for managing its risk and compliance obligations and to prevent such an issue reoccurring.
"In addition, since this issue commenced, there has been a significant program of transformation to improve our culture of accountability and compliance.
"Auto and General is committed to continuing to provide affordable, comprehensive and dependable insurance solutions to our loyal customers."
