A Melbourne grandmother has described how she is scared to leave her home after she was punched in the face and threatened on the street.

Virginia Beckworth, 79, had got out of her car on Walker Street in Dandenong, in Melbourne's south-east, just before 10am on Tuesday, June 14 when she was approached by a man who asked her for money.

The grandmother-of-12 said that when she told the man she didn't have any money he threatened her and punched her in the face, sending her flying around the car.

She said she caught herself just before she hit the ground.

"I feared for my life, I really did," Beckworth said.

After the attack, she took shelter in a nearby barbershop.

Barber Toros Ashnalian said Beckworth was "screaming and crying" when she arrived in the shop.

She was then taken to Dandenong Hospital to be treated for concussion.

She suffered bruising and swelling, severe headaches and hearing loss.

The assault occurred just weeks after she underwent an ear operation.

Beckworth has said she is now afraid to be out in public as she is haunted by the incident.

"It's at night time when I go to bed I shut my eyes and I see his face straight away coming towards me," she said.

She desperately hopes police will be able to track him down and stop him attacking anyone else.

Beckworth has described the man as being around 183 centimetres tall with a large build, and wearing a lime green beanie.
