Tremors felt after 3-magnitude earthquake in south-east Queensland

A 3-magnitude earthquake has been felt in Queensland's south-east, Geoscience Australia has confirmed.

The earthquake was felt in Brendale, a 35 minute drive north of Brisbane, in the state's Moreton Bay region.

Geoscience Australia data shows the earthquake struck around 1.30pm this afternoon and was 10 kilometres deep.

There were reports of tremors in Brisbane and surrounding regions.

Users on social media described feeling their properties shake and a large bang or rumbling sound as the earth shook.

One social media user said she felt "a few seconds of deep rumbling" from the downstairs of her south-east property.

A man in Eatons Hill, Moreton Bay described the earthquake as feeling "like a truck load of boulder rocks being dropped off outside our house".

Category 3 earthquakes are considered minor and unlikely to cause damage.

Last Friday, a category 6.2 earthquake was felt in Darwin and surrounding regions of the Northern Territory, with shaking triggered by an earthquake off the coast of Timor Leste.

Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Trevor Allen said earthquake tremors are felt more strongly for people in high-rise buildings, due to the natural sways and frequency of high-rise structures.

He said anyone who feels an earthquake tremor should seek shelter in secure areas.

"In terms of what to do if you do feel an earthquake, the best advice we have is to drop under a sturdy object or table, cover yourself, particularly your head and wait for the shaking to stop," Allen said.

Pilot accused of murdering Victorian missing campers appears in court

The Melbourne man accused of murdering missing Victorian campers Carol Clay and Russell Hill has appeared calm while fronting court from prison.

Greg Lynn, 55, has faced Sale Magistrates Court via video link from the Melbourne Assessment Prison, where he has been held for the past six months.

Lynn, who wore a blue top and glasses, seemed calm and only spoke briefly to confirm he could hear the magistrate at this afternoon's hearing.

Missing Carol Clay and Russell Hill.

His lawyer sought a lengthy adjournment for Lynn's case, saying the defence team had only received police exhibits in digital form and that Lynn had not had access to a computer in prison.

Magistrate Tim Walsh agreed to adjourn the case to August 23.

Lynn made no application for bail.

The suburbs where unit prices are decreasing in Brisbane

As housing prices reach record highs in south-east Queensland, new data shows units in some Brisbane suburbs are getting cheaper.

The city's housing market is the fastest growing of any Australian capital city with housing prices tipped to continue increasing throughout the year.

As the city sees a population boom, the average unit price in Brisbane has peaked at $437,000.

"It's gone up 3.1 per cent this year alone," Domain managing editor Alice Stolz said.

Domain data reveals some units in some south-east Queensland suburbs are cheaper than they were in 2017.

In the suburb of Windsor, Brisbane, data shows the average unit price has dropped by 15 per cent.

In Beenleigh, properties are on average 12.7 per cent cheaper than they were five years ago.

Some Milton apartments are costing approximately 10 per cent less while some Indooroopilly apartments are down by 6.6 per cent.

But Place real estate agent Alex Rutherford said not all properties had felt the dip, encouraging those on the market to do their research to find the best price.

"It's largely properties that were sold off the plan five to 10 years ago and are now reselling, yes lower than they were then but it's only a small segment of the market," Rutherford said.

On the Gold Coast, housing prices are increasing.

The only suburb where unit prices have dipped in the last five years is Coomera.

Property experts say now could be an ideal time for young buyers to enter the property market as prices are projected to spike again across the south-east.

"Especially with the end of the financial year coming there are investors that obviously want to have their properties sold before June 30," Rutherford said.

Stolz said with the price of property buying and building on the rise, now could be the ideal time to purchase a new home.

"Knowing that we're seeing such pressure in the construction industry, pipeline is really driving up in the development space, having a building in front of you with a key in your hand could be your way into the market."
