An underwater volcano that has sharks living inside its crater is starting to erupt, according to NASA.

The space agency said the Kavachi volcano, in the Solomon Islands, entered an active eruptive phase in October 2021 after a period of relative inactivity.

Fast forward six months and satellite data has shown discoloured water around Kavachi on several days in April and May 2022.

"(An image) acquired on May 14, 2022, by the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) on Landsat 9, shows a plume of discoloured water being emitted from the submarine volcano," NASA said.

"Previous research has shown such plumes of superheated, acidic water usually contain particulate matter, volcanic rock fragments, and sulfur.

"Prior to this recent activity, large eruptions were observed at Kavachi in 2014 and 2007."

Kavachi is deemed one of the most active submarine volcanoes in the Pacific region.

In 2015 cameras were dropped into the rolling crater in an expedition guided by National Geographic grantee Dr Brennan Phillips.

What scientists found inside the crater shocked them: reef sharks, hammerheads and scalloped hammerheads all swam up to the lens.

The species were seemingly unbothered by the fact an eruption had taken place moments before.

In 2020, marine ecologist Michael Heithaus, from the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University, hypothesised a cluster of pores on the sharks' snouts, called the ampullae of Lorenzini, helped them detect eruptions before they happened.

"It looked like the sharks in the volcano were used to dealing with eruptions," he told 9news.com.au.

"You would think it's dangerous but studies have shown us they can detect approaching hurricanes and cyclones, so they may be able to detect when something bad is about to happen and move out of the way.

"It just demonstrates how adaptable sharks are."

A woman has died after she was pulled from the water at a Gold Coast beach early this morning.

Emergency services rushed to Surfers Paradise beach around 4.15am.

The woman of unknown age was pulled unconscious from the surf.

Millions of Australians are heading to the polls today to cast their vote in the 2022 federal election.

Polling booths have opened with the first votes of today's election currently being cast. Ballot boxes will close at 6pm for counting to begin.

It comes after six weeks of hard campaigning from the Coalition and Labor.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese both began their mornings in Melbourne for last-minute campaigning, and they will later head to Sydney to cast their vote in their own electorates.

More than six million Australians have cast their vote early, via pre-poll or postal voting.

With the record number of early votes, the result of the federal election may not be known tonight as it takes time to count postal votes.

There were concerns polling centres would be unable to open due to staff shortages, particularly in regional parts of the country.

The Australian Electoral Commission said overnight all positions have been filled and the 76 polling booths in regional Australia which were at risk of not opening will be running today.

Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said on Friday it has been a "mammoth" effort to fill all the positions.

"If election day begun at 7pm tonight, every single one of the 7000 polling places we've planned for would open its doors," Rogers said.

"While this is extraordinary, it is a pandemic election.

Rogers added that some polling booths may end up closing today if the workers lined up for the regional centres do not turn up.

"If some of the small number of people we've lined up to work at a local voting centre withdraw on the morning of the election, we may not have back-ups available in that town," he said.
