Crocodile 'destroyed' after woman attacked in Western Australia

A woman has been attacked by a crocodile in Western Australia's Kimberley region.

The crocodile reportedly bit a 38-year-old woman in the leg on Monday while she was swimming in Butler Cove, Lake Argyle, an area that is home to freshwater crocodiles.

The woman is in a stable condition, Western Australia Health confirmed.

9News understands the woman was taken to Kununurra Hospital before being transported to Broome Hospital.

She sustained "serious leg injuries" in the unprovoked attack.

A Department of Biodiversity and Conservation (DBCA) spokesperson said staff saw a freshwater crocodile up to 2.5m in length in the area yesterday.

"Both the behaviour of a crocodile approaching the boat and the events of the previous day is consistent with what staff would identify as a problem animal," the spokesperson said.

Wildlife authorities have since "destroyed" the reptile to "ensure public safety".

The DBCA spokesperson added the area is home to a large population of freshwater crocodiles but they're not usually aggressive unless fed or interacted with.

"While not usually considered to be dangerous, animals have the potential to inflict serious injuries," the DBCA spokesperson said.

"The public is reminded not to feed or approach wildlife while recreating in the Kimberley."

Queensland police crack down on Gold Coast knife crime

Three years after a teenager was stabbed to death in the Gold Coast's nightlife district, Queensland police have significantly reduced knife related crime in the area.

The new data comes as Queensland Police conclude their year-long wanding trial, conducting 24/7 weapons checks on people in the designated Surfers Paradise Safe Night Precinct to prevent stabbings and other knife-related violence.

Queensland Police have seized over 130 weapons in the last 12 months and have arrested 106 offenders for weapon related crimes.

Acting assistant commissioner Rhys Wildman said knife-related crime in the area had dropped significantly recently due to the efforts of police.

"We've seen a 100 per cent reduction in armed hold-up offences and more stunningly an 850 per cent reduction of wounding matters," acting assistant commissioner Wildman said.

In the 12 months since the trial began, wounding offences have decreased by 88 per cent with the number of armed hold ups down by 50 per cent.

Officers filmed several seizures and arrests, confiscating an array of weapons including butcher's knives, blades, swords and tomahawks.

"The very first night when our staff actually intercepted a male entering a nightclub with a sharpened screwdriver is one of the things that blew my mind," acting assistant commissioner Wildman said.

Throughout the trial, police conducted weapons checks on 11,775 people, including 3275 juveniles.

Police seized 133 weapons and charged 106 offenders for knife-related offences.

Acting assistant commissioner Wildman said increased police presence had significant impacts on reducing overall crime in the area, with several others charged for drug-related offences and breaching domestic violence orders.

"This is about a far bigger picture than the wanding itself," acting assistant commissioner Wildman said.

Brett Beasley, the father of Jack Beasley who was killed at the age of 17 after being stabbed at Surfers Paradise in 2019 thanked police for their efforts.

"We're here to save lives," he said.

"These figures are absolutely fantastic and these little devices (wanding tools) are saving lives."

Data and results of the trial will be analysed by Griffith University.

Acting assistant commissioner Wildman said the 24/7 police patrols would continue over the next 12 months, until the operations become a permanent part of legislation.

"We hope that this trial will become a permanent fixture," he said.

"The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive."

Nespresso offers free coffee for used pods

Hold onto your old coffee pods! 

Coffee giant Nespresso has today introduced a program in hopes to entice pod users to recycle their used coffee capsules.

In exchange for used capsules and pods, Nespresso is keen to reward its customers with their choice of gift.

A full bag of used pods, about 100, can be taken into their local Nespresso store, there you'll need to scan a QR code, register for the program and collect a reward.

Pod users can choose from either a free sleeve of coffee, a notebook made of old coffee grounds, or a beach towel. 

The pods are then sent off to the New South Wales recycling depot, where the grounds and aluminum are separated and then recycled.

The pods can be any kind and any brand. Even if you're using supermarket brand pods, Nespresso will happily accept them for the good of the planet.

The initiative is only available in-store, so if you're someone who posts their pods directly to the recycling plant, you won't be able to take advantage of this.

The program will run until the end of June and is limited to one exchange per month.
