Three years after going missing, teen found shivering 1100km away

Authorities in the US state of Utah had been hearing about a young man wandering the area with a shopping cart for several weeks.

When they encountered him last Saturday, they discovered he was reported missing nearly three years ago in northern California, more than 1100km away.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a gas station on the morning of April 9 in the greater Park City area in Summit County after a "concerned community member" reported seeing the man sleeping there, the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.

The area is about a 40-minute drive from Salt Lake City.

Deputies offered the man to sit inside one of their vehicles to warm up and began researching who he was.

"Through past interactions and the Saturday interaction, it was clear to deputies that the man communicated differently," the sheriff's office said, and also included an autism awareness hashtag on its Facebook post.

A dispatcher began looking through pages on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website, and more than a dozen pages in, came across a missing poster for Connerjack Oswalt.

Bodycam footage provided by the sheriff's office shows the day deputies encountered Oswalt at the gas station.

Oswalt, now 19, had been reported missing in September 2019 from Clearlake, California, northwest of Sacramento and roughly an 11.5-hour drive from Summit County.

Authorities believed it was the same person they had found shivering at the gas station.

"Deputies began making phone calls and were able to make contact with Connerjack's mother," Summit County Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Wright told CNN in an email.

His mother told authorities Oswalt had a distinctive birthmark on his neck.

Deputies found the mark on Oswalt, Wright said.

Though authorities had previous interactions with Oswalt prior to that day, he had not shared who he was and police "didn't have reason to demand his information because he wasn't violating the law," Wright said.

Oswalt's stepfather and grandfather went to Park City to identify him in person and be reunited, Wright told CNN.

In one of two bodycam videos sent to CNN from the sheriff's office, Oswalt's stepfather is seen exclaiming in disbelief as police show him a mug shot of Oswalt to confirm it was the same person.

Wright told CNN Oswalt had a previous arrest warrant.

"Is it him?" Oswalt's mother can be heard from the phone, which was on speaker.

"A little bit older, but yeah," Oswalt's stepfather responds.

"My sweetheart's alive," the mother is heard saying, while sobbing on the phone. "Can you go get him please?"

Oswalt's mother and stepfather moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, since he went missing, authorities said.

Oswalt was still receiving care and resources and has not yet gone to Idaho, Wright said.

Woman dies after ten get into trouble in water at NSW beach

A woman has died after ten people got into trouble in the water at a NSW South Coast Beach on Easter Sunday.

Ambulance crews were called to Surf Beach at Batemans Bay at 2pm.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was given CPR and taken to Batemans Bay Hospital in a critical condition.

Beachgoers had also tried to save her before crews arrived.

Multiple people are being treated by paramedics after an "incident" at a NSW beach.

But a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said she couldn't be revived.

Three other people were also rushed to hospital in serious conditions; two men, one in his 40s and another in his 30s, and a woman in her 30s.

Inspector Faye Stockman from NSW Ambulance said the scene was "chaotic".

"All of the patients were out of the water when ambulance crews arrived and three members of the public were attempting CPR on a female who had suffered a cardiac arrest," Insp Stockman, said.

"This is a timely reminder of the importance of knowing CPR and I praise those members of the public for doing everything they could under extremely challenging conditions."

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Surf Life Saving Australia Helicopter were involved.

"It's truly heartbreaking to have lost a life here today, especially knowing this group of people was likely enjoying an extended break for the holiday weekend."

Voter support for Labor, Anthony Albanese drops away in new poll

A new poll after the first week of the election campaign shows a plunge in support for Labor and Anthony Albanese.

The exclusive Resolve poll for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age suggests that a series of miss-steps by Mr Albanese has caused some voters to abandon the Opposition Leader, who is looking to return Labor to government for the first time in almost 10 years.

Anthony Albanese has been critical of the government's failure to create an anti-corruption commission.Scott Morrison is standing by Warringah candidate Katherine Deves.

Voter support for the opposition fell from 38 per cent to 34 per cent.

When it comes to preferred prime minister, Scott Morrison now leads Mr Albanese by 38 per cent to 30 per cent, a reversal after the Labor leader's slim advantage a fortnight again (37 to 36 per cent).

Primary support for the Coalition rose from 34 to 35 per cent, and Mr Morrison made gains on his personal approval and performance on key issues including economic management and national security.
