YouTuber fined after leading ‘downright dangerous’ rideout over Harbour Bridge
The YouTuber who led dozens of young e-bike riders across the Sydney Harbour Bridge during peak hour, in a move labelled "stupid and downright dangerous", has spoken of his regret and been fined by police.
Police received several calls on Tuesday after dozens of young e-bike riders, including some in school uniform and without a helmet, were filmed riding over the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Los Angeles-based e-bike influencer Sur Ronster organised the event and has told Nine newspaper Sydney Morning Herald he did not intend to lead the riders through the city, saying some even followed him home after the meet-up.

"I'm unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault … once I saw what it became, my goal was to sort of put an end to it," the 26-year-old said.
The creator, who has more than five million followers, said he mistakenly found himself heading towards the landmark after becoming disoriented, resulting in a last-second decision to U-turn in the opposite direction in what he called a "very safe" manoeuvre.
"Fortunately, there was gridlock traffic at the time, so our lane was entirely stopped, and the oncoming lane was probably only going a few kilometres an hour at the time," Ronster told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I do regret waking up and seeing how it was shown on a lot of the news sources. I felt like I failed and made bike life have a bad reputation, and as a guest in a new city, that's the opposite of my goal."
Under current laws, it's illegal to ride any bike, including e-bikes, on the main deck of the bridge and a cycleway is provided separately from the roadway.
He has been handed two Traffic Infringement Notices for negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm) with a fine of $562 and three demerit points each.
"Apart from that behaviour being illegal, it was incredibly irresponsible, stupid and downright dangerous," Assistant Commissioner David Driver said earlier this week.

"We don't want to be knocking on your door and telling you your child has been killed in one of these stupid rideouts," Driver said.
The Assistant Commissioner said that some of e-rideables had been modified to "effectively become motorbikes", which makes them significantly more dangerous.
Police have said they have identified license plates, school uniforms and "very clear footage" which they will use to prosecute those who took part in the dangerous stunt.

Banks pass on interest rate rises to savers
Two of the big banks have hiked their interest rates on savings accounts in response to Tuesday's cash rate rise.
Both the Commonwealth Bank and Westpac have increased select saving rates by 0.25 per cent, at the same time as hiking their home loan rates.
A number of smaller banks have also passed on the increase.

But according to Canstar, many account holders don't meet the criteria to enjoy the bonus interest.
A recent survey of more than 1000 Australians with a savings account that has terms and conditions required to reach the maximum interest found 41 per cent do not meet the conditions each month.
This includes 11 per cent who say they never meet the conditions.
The standard rate is often inconsequential in comparison.
For example, the Commonwealth Bank's Goal Saver account attracts 4.50 per cent bonus interest, but only 0.25 per cent in standard interest.
Conditions can include terms like making a deposit, or increasing the account balance, each month or making no withdrawals.
"CBA has lifted the maximum rate on its popular Goal Saver account to 4.50 per cent, which will be a win for engaged savers. However, like Westpac, customers need to meet the bank's monthly terms and conditions or risk seeing their rate fall to an inch off the floor," Canstar.com.au's data insights director, Sally Tindall, said.
"CBA is also lifting the rate on its NetBank Saver, to a headline rate of 4.70 per cent for new customers for the first five months, however, existing customers will only see a boost of 0.15.
"That said, it's more than Westpac's online saver rate for existing customers, which isn't moving at all.
"These rate decisions, where banks pick and choose which rates within a savings account get a boost and which miss out, are a great reminder of how important the fine print is when it comes to something as seemingly simple as a savings rate."

She said customers must check the conditions regularly to ensure they're making the most of their money.
"Canstar research shows two in five bonus savers miss out on earning the maximum interest every month, so it's imperative people understand the conditions and consider whether a simpler account might suit them better.
"In a market where top savings rates are now pushing into the 5's again, savers should shop around if their bank isn't rewarding them for their loyalty."

‘Pretty lucky’: Homes spared after flames came dangerously close to Perth properties
Homes in the Perth Hills are once again under threat, as residents in Helena Valley and Darlington were issued their second emergency warning in just over a month.
Locals were told to leave or prepare to shelter in their homes as a bushfire came dangerously close to properties.
Earlier this evening, the alert was downgraded but Emergency WA warned it's not safe to return as there's still a possible threat to homes and lives overnight.
LATEST UPDATES: See the latest bushfire warnings and alerts here.
Thanks to favourable weather conditions, the blaze has remained stationary for much of the afternoon.
But residents are warned the bushfire is not yet controlled or contained and things can change very quickly.
Earlier in the day, thick smoke made visibility difficult as flames ravaged the hilly and inaccessible terrain, adding to the woes for Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) crews.
"We've got a bit of machinery happening around the perimetre of the fire trying to create this mineral earth break so it won't progress over the night," Tim McGrade from DFES said.
The fire broke out just before 2pm, with residents quickly issued an emergency warning and evacuation centres opened.
Firefighters did not waste any time, tackling the blaze from the ground and the sky while the weather worked in their favour.
"We've been pretty lucky with the wind, it's pretty still at the moment so the fire isn't moving," McGrade said.
The fire burnt through 27 hectares within three hours, the spread reduced by the lack of wind and a pocket only recently burned.
Relief for locals as properties spared and only power poles impacted.
"That's a testament to the crews again and potentially to the community who's prepared, and that's a wonderful thing to see," McGrade said.
A total fire ban is in place for parts of the state.

Major highway closed after truck carrying excavator hits overhead bridge
A major highway on Queensland's Sunshine Coast has been closed after a truck carrying an excavator crashed into an overhead bridge.
Emergency services were called to the Bruce Highway at Tanawha after the crash happened at about 8.45am (AEST).
Police said initial enquiries indicated a truck travelling southbound carrying an excavator hit the under side of the Ilkey Road overpass.

The overpass has a height limit of 5.4m for vehicles travelling under it.
No one was injured in the crash.
Police said multiple diversions have been put in place and the southbound lanes of the highway are expected to remain closed for most of the day.
According to government transport update website Qld Traffic, nearby Ilkley Road is also closed and diversions are in place via Maroochydore Road southbound.
Motorists have been told to expect long delays.

Sunshine Coast Police senior sergeant Scott Wiggins said the crash appeared to have caused "significant damage" to the bridge.
"The damage is currently being inspected by engineers," Wiggins said.

Gus Lamont’s grandparents ‘devastated’ after missing boy case declared major crime
The grandparents of missing boy Gus Lamont have released a statement through their lawyers saying they are "absolutely devastated" after the four-year-old's disappearance was yesterday declared a major crime.
Gus was reported as last seen playing on a mound of dirt about 5pm on September 27 at his family home, the Oak Park Station homestead, which is about 43 kilometres south of Yunta in South Australia.
Police yesterday declared the disappearance a major crime.

Today, lawyers acting for the four-year-old's grandparents Josie Murray and Shannon Murray released this statement on their behalf:
"We are absolutely devastated by the media release of SAPOL Major Crime. The family has cooperated fully with the investigation and want nothing more than to find Gus and reunite him with his mum and dad."
The lawyers also indicated Josie and Shannon Murray will not be making any further comments.
There is no suggestion Josie or Shannon Murray are involved in the disappearance of Gus and it is not unusual for anyone linked to an investigation to seek out legal advice.
Police yesterday said a person who has close ties to the household, who is not one of his parents, was speaking with detectives but then "withdrew co-operation" and is now considered a suspect. No arrests have been made.
Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke also revealed the investigation had centred on three theories: whether Gus was abducted; whether someone he knows was involved in his disappearance or suspected death; and whether he wandered off from Oak Park Station.
Fielke said detectives from Taskforce Horizon have a "high level of confidence" he did not wander off.
Investigators have also found no evidence to suggest Gus was abducted.
The search for Gus
No evidence of Gus has been uncovered despite extensive searches of the property, which Fielke said has been the "largest and most intensive" missing person search ever undertaken by SA Police.
A full-scale ground and air search of the property and the surrounding area was launched after Gus went missing.
Officers returned to the area surrounding Oak Park Station to search for Gus' remains on February 2, but uncovered no evidence.

Man shot dead after woman stabbed during alleged home invasion, police pursuit
A suspected domestic violence stabbing and a dramatic pursuit ended with a man being shot dead by police on the NSW Mid North Coast this morning.
Just before 6.40am, officers were called to a home on Heath Avenue, Tuncurry, after reports a man armed with a chainsaw and knife had broken in.
On the way, police were told the woman had been stabbed and the man had fled in a white four-wheel drive.

At the home, police found a 28-year-old woman with serious wounds.
She was treated and airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition, where she remains.
A short time later, police saw the four-wheel drive on Stewart Parade, Tuncurry, and commenced a pursuit.
The driver allegedly then headed to a local petrol station and carjacked a second vehicle.
"I didn't realise what was happening, I just thought it was a bit of road rage," a worker at the petrol station told 9News.
"As soon as he hit the car, I called the local police."
The driver allegedly then drove through a sportsground before crashing on the Forster Bridge, where he reportedly carjacked another vehicle, rammed a police car and injured an officer.

The pursuit ended on Idlewood Drive in Rainbow Flat where the man allegedly drove onto a property and entered a home, still armed with a knife, and tried to steal a fourth car.
The man then left that home and confronted police.
Officers deployed a Taser multiple times as the man allegedly ran to a neighbouring property and then toward an officer, still armed with a knife.
The officer discharged his firearm, shooting the man.
Police and paramedics rendered first aid, but the man died at the scene.
The man's family told 9News he was a single father-of-three who lived with diagnosed schizophrenia.
Police believe he and the woman who was stabbed were in a relationship, and are treating the investigation as a domestic violence incident.
The man is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be 41.
A critical incident investigation is now under way.
