Man arrested after woman killed in alleged knife attack

A woman has died after she was allegedly attacked with a knife in a suspected domestic violence incident at a home in Hobart's east.

A man she knew is in custody and two teens who witnessed the alleged killing have been left "significantly distressed", police say.

Emergency services were called to a home in Binalong Road, Mornington, about 1.30pm.

Police said they received reported a woman had been injured with a knife and found here in a serious condition, with upper-body injuries.

The 52-year-old died shortly after arriving at Royal Hobart Hospital.

Police said a 60-year-old Hobart man was taken into custody without incident at the scene.

"Two other people – aged in their teens – were present at the time of the incident," police said, in a statement.

"The two teenagers were not physically injured but of course they are significantly distressed by this incident."

Police said all violence was unacceptable and family violence should not be tolerated.

"Any incident like this is confronting and distressing to all involved from loved ones to the community, to emergency services who attended," police said.

"When children are involved, it certainly does have an impact on our officers. Wellbeing support is provided to officers affected by incidents."

Perth fisherman catchers 2.5m tiger shark on Christmas Day trip

A fisherman out on a Christmas Day fishing trip in Western Australia has ended up catching something a lot bigger.

Terry Pryor was fishing for snapper this morning off Woodman Point in Coogee when he hooked a 2.5m tiger shark.

"I was reeling in my last line and it was well attached to a shark and it took me nearly an hour to get it on the beach," Mr Pryor said.

People on the beach chanted for Mr Pryor, who said the catch was accidental, to let the shark go.

Mr Pryor said he kept the shark in the water so it would stay safe until he could get the hook out.

He said the shark was eventually released back into the water.

Onlookers chanted to let the shark go back into the water.

"Because the shark was quite tired, I was comfortable in getting in with the shark in the water and cut the hook out and I ended up swimming the shark out to about chest height up the beach before it finally gave a tail wag and send it," Mr Pryor said.

It wasn't the only shark spotted on Perth's coast this Christmas Day.

Hundreds of swimmers were sent out of the water after four beaches were shut down following sightings of sharks at Coogee, Mullalloo, Leighton and Port.

Captain Santa flies last Christmas Day flight

A Qantas pilot has captained his final holiday flight after 41 years of Christmas Day flying.

Captain Steve Anderson is retiring after decades of flying passengers to their destinations on Christmas Day.

For one day a year, Captain Anderson switches his pilot's uniform for a red suit and white beard and goes by Captain Santa.

For one day a year, Captain Steve Anderson goes by Captain Santa.

"You get cheers. You get claps. It's wonderful," he said.

While COVID-19 has brought difficulty to many of Mr Anderson's passengers, he says it's nice to see smiles returning to people's faces.

"If we can make just one person smile it's great," he said.

But today was the pilot's final Santa flight.

"It's the end of an era for me but I've got [a] new one coming up but it's still sad," Mr Anderson said.

In August, he will officially retire from all flying.
