Melbourne P-plater allegedly clocked nearly 100km/h above speed limit

A Melbourne driver still on his probationary license is unlikely to be getting behind the wheel again anytime soon after he was allegedly caught driving almost 100 km/h above the speed limit.

Victorian State Highway Patrol officers were stunned when they pulled over a 21-year-old who had allegedly been travelling at 183km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Monash Freeway in Endeavour Hills.

The man, who had two friends in the car with him, was arrested at the scene.

A P-plater in Melbourne was arrested after allegedly driving at 183km/h

His car, a Subaru, has been impounded for 30 days.

Police have issued a warning to residents to drive responsibly, particularly given the torrid weather conditions Victoria is currently experiencing.

"Travelling at such reckless speeds is extremely dangerous and irresponsible," State Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Paul Storen said.

"Probationary drivers have limited experience on the roads and adding wet weather to the mix — this could have easily ended in tragedy."
