Man dies after falling from Sydney balcony after DV call

A man has died after falling from a seventh floor balcony in Sydney's west in what police called an "absolutely tragic" incident.

Police were called by a woman to a family domestic violence case at units on Hamilton Road in Fairfield at 2.10am today.

Officers found a 55-year-old man straddling the balcony railing of a seventh-floor unit.

Police spoke to him from the ground as others headed upstairs but he fell, suffering head injuries.

NSW Ambulance paramedics tried to save him but he died.

"This is an absolutely tragic set of circumstances," NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.

"Part of the investigation will look at the domestic and family violence that's taken place on the day."

He said an AVO was in place but it didn't specifically prevent contact.

"It is a complex set of circumstances involving the two people, a man and a woman," he said.

A 46-year-old woman, who was inside the unit, was assessed for shock and minor injuries.

A crime scene was set up and an investigation launched.

It'll be the subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Police are looking for a car as the hunt for a man accused of shooting three people dead in the NSW central west widens.

Julian Ingram, also known as Julian Pierpoint, is wanted on an outstanding warrant for alleged murder and is still on the run.

Police said the 37-year-old was last seen driving a dual cab Ford Ranger utility with the NSW registration DM-07-GZ, a Lachlan Shire Council magnet in front of the driver's door and four black numbers above the magnet.

Police said the car has a Lachlan Shire Council magnet in front of the driver's door.

The ute police are searching for also has an emergency orange light bar on the roof and the utility's tray may contain work tools and a silver toolbox.

Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland said this morning authorities have also cleared two premises at a nearby village.

"At this point, our search area is widening, and we are looking at other locations in the broader districts from information supplied to police," Holland said.

Holland said the last known sighting of Ingram, who is believed by police to be "armed and dangerous", was on a road outside of Lake Cargelligo on the day of the alleged incident.

Ingram is described as being Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, about 165cm to 170cm tall, of a medium build with short dark hair and brown eyes.

Holland said that while the town is not in lockdown, people are being urged to exercise "extreme caution" as up to 100 officers continue to search the area.

"Acknowledge that in the back of their mind, that the offender is still on the loose."

"He is still armed, we believe, and there is a possibility they could come across him."

Holland also said they are investigating whether somebody within the community could be assisting the alleged shooter.

"Ingram has worked in the area for a long time," he said.

"He is known to a lot of people in the area, and he's well known among the community.

"He obviously could be accessing the people, and we're obviously making contact with known associates, trying to cut down those possibilities."

Holland added that the locals have been "fantastic" in their assistance with ongoing police investigations.

"We've got multiple lines of inquiry coming through," he said.

Investigations began on Thursday after emergency services were called to Bokhara Street in Lake Cargelligo at about 4.30pm.

Police found a 25-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man in a vehicle, both with gunshot wounds.

They were both treated but died at the scene.

They have since been named as Sophie Quinn, Ingram's ex-partner, and her friend John Harris.

Quinn was heavily pregnant and was due to give birth in March.

The woman, who has been named as Sophie's aunt, Nerida Quinn, died at the scene, while the man was taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

String of shark attacks

Nico, a junior lifesaver, was the first of four shark attack victims in 48 hours on NSW beaches this week after last weekend's wild weather.

A surfer, 27-year-old musician Andre De Ruyter, was attacked in the water at a Manly beach on Monday.

He was pulled to shore by fellow surfers and remains in a critical condition, with part of his lower right leg amputated.

Hours early at nearby Dee Why Beach, also on the northern beaches, an 11-year-old surfer had his board bitten by a shark.

The whole stretch of beaches were closed on Monday.

The next day Paul Zvirzdinas was surfing at Point Plomer, north of Port Macquarie on the NSW Mid North Coast, when a shark took a bite out of his board and wetsuit at about 10am.

The 39-year-old said he saw his board shake then paddled to shore.

"Just paddle as hard as you can," he said he recalled thinking.

He only suffered minor injuries and has since been discharged from hospital.

This morning a shark sighting at Manly forced the closure of the beach just hours after flags were set up for the day.

The state's recent wet weather, considered a once-in-a-500 year event, has been a perfect storm for bull sharks to lurk in coastal waters around Sydney and the rest of NSW.

Heavy rain means more fresh water than usual is running through rivers and estuaries into saltwater systems and beaches, creating brackish water.

This is a phenomenon where fresh and saltwater mix, being saltier than normal freshwater, but less salty than typical seawater.

"Bull sharks are also one of the few species of sharks and rays that can tolerate brackish and even freshwater for extended periods," Professor Jodie Rummer from James Cook University said.

"Which means they are especially comfortable moving in and out of river mouths and turbid coastal waters after heavy rain."

There's also been an emergency warning issued this afternoon for residents in multiple communities to leave immediately.

A total fire ban is in place today for East Gippsland, West and South Gippsland, North East, Central, North Central, Northern Country, South West, Wimmera and Mallee.

The fire comes as Victorians swelter through the first day of what is expected to be a five or six day heatwave.
