Seeing the aurora borealis, or northern lights, is a bucket list experience for many.

But the southern lights, which can be found in Australia, have captured the attention of photographers and astronomy enthusiasts alike.

For Tasmanian-based photographer Thurein Kyaw, finding one of the elusive light displays is a "magical" experience.

"A lot of people have the misconception it happens at a particular time of the year, which is false… it's completely random," Mr Kyaw said.

Facebook groups, such as Aurora Australis Tasmania and Aurora Hunters Victoria, can offer advice about where a light display is likely to appear.

"When you know it's happening, head out and hope for the best," Mr Kyaw said.

"Everyone knows about the northern lights in Norway and Finland, but not many people actually know about the southern lights."

Otherwise known as aurora australis, the natural electric phenomenon is the result of various interactions in the earth's atmosphere.

In Australia, the best place to see the colourful light display is in the south of Tasmania.

Occasionally, photographers can also experience the lights in parts of Victoria and Queensland.

There's no sure-fire way to find a display, it simply comes down to "luck and perseverance".

Mr Kyaw said photographers needed a cloudless sky with minimal moonlight to achieve a good photo.

It is also important to find a location away from light pollution with a clear view of the southern horizon.

And when the stars align, it can be a profound experience.

"I grew up in big cities and they don't really see stars at all because there's just too much light pollution," Mr Kyaw said.

"Getting to a very dark spot where you can see the aurora and the stars, you get a sense of just how small you are in the scheme of the universe. 

"It's quite a humbling experience."
