Tiny newborn Charlie breaks record as Queensland’s smallest baby

Baby boy Charlie Jones has made history as Queensland's smallest-ever newborn after he arrived early, weighing less than a can of Coke.

Charlie was born at Brisbane Mater Mothers' Hospital on October 8 at 26 weeks, and tipped the scales at just 360 grams.

His minuscule weight is barely one-tenth of the average baby boy and is believed to be the state's tiniest newborn – breaking the record once held by the famous "Coke can kid", Jonathon Heeley, who weighed 400 grams when he was born in 1992.

Charlie's mum Samantha sadly suffered a miscarriage last year and was worried her baby boy wouldn't make it.

Samantha also suffers from epilepsy and Type 1 diabetes, both of which may have impacted her placental function and led to something called IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction).

"After two weeks in hospital the doctors told me it looked like my placenta was about to fail and I was taken down to have a c-section delivery," Samantha said.

"I was extremely nervous. The doctors had said they were concerned about whether Charlie would be too small for the equipment needed to keep him alive."

Charlie was delivered via c-section and doctors initially estimated he would weigh around 400 grams.

But his first weigh-in revealed the tiny tot has likely broken a record.

He is only slightly heavier than Australia's smallest newborn Elora De Bondi, who was just 319 grams when she was born in 2007.

"We have had babies born at similar or smaller sizes to Charlie before, but tragically they have not survived," Mater's Director of Neonatology Dr Pita Birch said.

"Charlie's story is the result of many advances in the way we care for very small babies and their mothers – thanks to research, enhanced technology and learning from other units around the world.

"But it's also down to Charlie too. He's a tough little guy."

Two months on, Charlie is now a healthier 1.4 kilograms.

Samantha and her husband Nick will spend Christmas with their son in hospital.

Charlie is expected to remain in a critical care neonatal unit until at least January.

‘Terrible’: Woman fighting for life after alleged hit and run on Sunshine Coast

A man has been charged with the attempted murder of eight people after an alleged hit-and-run on the Sunshine Coast left a woman aged 24 fighting for life.

Police said a Toyota Yaris ploughed into eight pedestrians near the intersection of Aerodrome Road and Fourth Avenue in Maroochydore late last night.

Police will allege a "minor" incident took place between the 38-year-old driver and a group of men just before as they used a pedestrian crossing.

Peter Hocken said the incident was a "tragedy". A 24-year-old woman is fighting for life after an alleged hit-and-run on the Sunshine Coast.

The driver is believed to have driven away before returning and allegedly hitting the pedestrians on the footpath on purpose, police say.

Eight people, six men as well as two women who police say happened to be walking, by were hit.

A 24-year-old woman from New South Wales who was visiting family was left with life-threatening injuries.

She was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

Three others, all teenagers, were taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with minor injuries, but were released.

"It was minor in nature," Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken said.

"It was just a traffic incident, the males were crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing, and the male driver took offence to that, and got out and challenged the males."

The driver of the Yaris, a foreign man living in Maroochydore, allegedly fled in the car, but was found a short time later by police at his unit.

He has been charged with eight counts of attempted murder.

Hocken said the incident was "unbelievable", especially given the injured woman was not involved in the initial incident.

"This is a tragedy, it's terrible what's happened to this poor woman and her family before Christmas. It's inconceivable," he said.

Police believe alcohol may have been involved, but investigations continue.

The driver will face Maroochydore Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Teenager falls to her death while trying to take photo at lookout

A teenager has fallen to her death on the Sunshine Coast after slipping off a cliff while trying to take a photo.

A 17-year-old girl fell 30-metres down a cliff at a lookout on Queen of Colonies Parade in Moffat Beach about 6.40pm (7.40pm AEDT) after reportedly jumping over a safety fence.

Despite the efforts of bystanders and paramedics, she died at the scene after suffering significant head injuries.

The girl is believed to have been with friends watching the sunset and climbed over the railing to get a better view.

"[She] has slipped and fallen 30m onto the rocks below," Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken from Queensland Police said

He added it was a confronting scene and a tragedy for those bystanders, including off-duty medical professionals who tried to save her.

"They managed to locate this young lady and provided as much assistance as they could," he said.

"Unfortunately, she passed away on scene. Her injuries were quite severe.

"Life can be a bit unfair, especially at this time before Christmas."

Another woman suffered minor injuries as she tried to help the teenager.

The rough terrain even caused firefighters to slip as they attempted to reach her.

Authorities warned visitors to stay clear of the fences when visiting lookouts.

"Especially this time of the year, but throughout the whole year, just please respect the barriers that are put in place," Ryan Dubyk from Queensland Fire and Rescue said.

"Just stay back."

Bonnie Blue returns home to the UK after leaving Bali

Adult content creator Bonnie Blue has returned home to the UK after leaving Bali.

The British national was recently arrested along with 14 Australians on the Indonesian party island, allegedly suspected of making pornographic material.

Blue was cleared of that charge and ultimately found guilty of just one offence, a traffic infringement based on carrying passengers in the back of a ute called the "bangbus".

Bonnie Blue claims she is only barred from Bali for six months, rather than 10 years.

Blue was fined $19 and returned to the UK, where she expressed no regrets and said reports of being banned for 10 years from Bali were not correct.

"That's a lie, I'm not, it's not 10 years. It's only six months," she told 9News.

Blue said she only had concern for "a few hours" during her ordeal with Bali police.

Asked about the 14 Australians also embroiled, she claimed they were not doing anything harmful.

"Just having fun, like most people," she said.

Two killed, nine injured in shooting at US university

At least two people have been killed and nine more were injured in a shooting at an engineering building in Brown University, USA, a law enforcement official said.

The Ivy League school issued an active shooter alert and urged students and staff to take shelter during the second day of final exams.

Police did not immediately release details about the victims' conditions or the circumstances of the shooting.

President Donald Trump confirmed he had been briefed on the shooting.

"What a terrible thing it is," he told reporters.

"All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt.

"We'll inform you later as to what's happening, but it's a shame."

He later shared a post on his Truth Social account, saying the FBI were on the scene.

"God bless the victims and the families of the victims!" the post concluded.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed two people had been killed and another eight people had been injured.

It is understood the injured have been taken to hospital, where they remain in a critical but stable condition.

He later reported a ninth person was injured, but that their injuries were non-life-threatening.

Police confirmed in a press conference they are looking for a male suspect who left the scene on foot.

The suspect was a male wearing dark clothing, last seen leaving the engineering building where the attack happened, Deputy Chief of Police Timothy O'Hara said.

The FBI is assisting the Providence Police Department in the hunt for the accused gunman.

Smiley said there is a lot of "fear and anxiety" within the community without a suspect in custody.

A person preliminarily thought to be involved was detained earlier but was later determined to have no involvement.

Smiley urged residents to remain indoors and to listen to advice from authorities.

Authorities believe the shooter used a handgun, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorised to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The unthinkable has happened," Democratic Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said.

University officials initially told students and staff that a suspect was in custody, before later saying that was not the case and that police were still searching for a suspect or suspects, according to alerts issued through Brown's emergency notification system.

The reported shooting occurred near the Barus & Holley building, a seven-story complex that houses the university's School of Engineering and physics department.

According to the university's website, the building includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices.

Engineering design exams were under way in the building when the shooting occurred.

"We know there is a lot of fear and concern and uncertainty in the community right now," the university said in a statement.

"Law enforcement is actively working to identify the deceased victims, and the hospital personnel are also working to identify those transported to the hospital.

As a reminder, please continue to take all steps to remain safe. Follow the instructions of law enforcement personnel and avoid the area. The safety of our community is foremost."

A police officer warned members of the media to take cover in vehicles because the area was still an active scene.

"We're still getting information about what's going on, but we're just telling people to lock their doors and to stay vigilant," said Providence Councilmember John Goncalves, whose ward includes the Brown campus.

"As a Brown alum, someone who loves the Brown community and represents this area, I'm heartbroken. My heart goes out to all the family members and the folks who've been impacted."

Officers carrying assault weapons and emergency vehicles lined many of the streets surrounding the engineering school.

Officials were still gathering information, said Kristy DosReis, chief public information officer for the city.

President Donald Trump said late in the afternoon that he has been briefed on the shooting.

"God bless the victims and the families of the victims!" he said on his social media site.

Trump told reporters that "all we can do right now is pray for the victims."

"It's a shame," he said in brief remarks at the White House.

Brown senior biochemistry student Alex Bruce was working on a final research project in his dorm directly across the street from the building when he heard sirens outside and received a text about an active shooter shortly after 4pm.

"I'm just in here shaking," he said, watching through the window as a half-dozen armed officers in tactical gear surrounded his dorm.

He said he feared for a friend who he thought was inside the engineering building at the time.

Students in a nearby lab hid under desks and turned off the lights after receiving an alert about the shooting, said Chiangheng Chien, a doctoral student in engineering who was about a block away from the scene.

Mari Camara, 20, a junior from New York City, was coming out of the library and rushed inside a taqueria to seek shelter.

She spent more than three hours there, texting friends while police searched the campus.

The Ivy League school is a private, non-profit institution with about 7300 undergraduates and just over 3000 graduate students, according to its website.

Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.

These Aussies uphold a treasured Christmas tradition. But it doesn’t come cheap or easy

Driving around to look at Christmas lights is a treasured holiday tradition, but behind the incredible displays are everyday Australians who spend thousands of dollars and countless hours each year putting the experience together.

Andrew Walters has spent more than $30,000 over 21 years on lights and decorations to create an incredible Christmas display on his Adelaide home.

He has a total of 250,000 lights that adorn practically every inch of his home.

Andrew Walters has spent more than $30,000 on decorations and amassed 250,000 lights to create his incredible Christmas display on his home.

Walters starts planning a new design for his home each July and begins setting up around September for a December unveiling.

He said it was all worth it for the thousands of people who come by and the money they raise for charity.

"A lot of busyness around this time of year, you can lose sight of Christmas. These sorts of things can help bring back the spirit of Christmas," he said.

"It's really good to give people in the area the memories, but also my family those memories as well."

Andrew Walters has spent more than $30,000 on decorations and amassed 250,000 lights to create his incredible Christmas display on his home.

In Perth, Charmaine Van Vliet roped her entire street into participating in Christmas displays after wanting to outdo a nearby street.

She estimates each house has spent anywhere from $1000 to $5000 on decorations.

Van Vliet creates and builds a lot of her decorations and helps her neighbours put their lights up all during the summer heat, which can exceed 40 degrees in Perth.

She also organises a mailbox where children can leave letters to Santa that she replies to, a bubble and snow machine and an elf who plays basketball with the children.

"Parents have trouble getting their kids to go home," she said.

Van Vliet's street has won the local council's best decorated street competition for four of the last five years.

They donate the entire $1000 prize money to several charities.

"A lot of people do it tough during the year financially, and if in December, we can just bring a bit of free joy and entertainment and relief for people, that's good enough for us," she said.

Scott Church and his partner had a spontaneous idea to create a Christmas display last year, but a couple of thousand dollars later, that turned into a full-blown spectacle.

Scott Church is new to the game after his partner had the spontaneous idea to create a Christmas display last year, but they have already spent more than $6000 to fill their front yard with lights and decorations.

He has also spent hours of his time creating his own decorations.

Church said he was surprised to find that creating the display would bring him as much joy as it has.

"It's just amazing," he said.

He has received offers for donations to help fund the project, but said that was not what he was doing it for.

"I'd rather the community just come to my house, get a candy cane, have a sweet, enjoy my lights and talk about it with their family," he said.

"That's what gets me: just the enjoyment and the excitement that it brings to people."

Perth family offers reward for rare, valuable dog feared stolen

The family of a rare and valuable puppy believed to have been stolen in Perth is pleading for his safe return.

Dog breeder Nicquelle Rhodes loves Ra like a child.

"He was born and raised here," she said.

"I delivered that puppy, I took him out of his birth sack."

Ra vanished without a trace from Harrison Road in Mount Richon along with three other dogs.

The others were found soon after, but Ra remains missing.

"The fence has actually been bent here as you can see it's sort of askew now, it's completely been bent there," Rhodes said.

Though the animals were first thought to have run away, the family now believes Ra has been stolen.

"He is a pedigree dog from champion bloodlines and I am concerned he's been taken for greed rather than by someone who intends to love him," Rhodes said.

The rare puppy with breeding potential could be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

But for Rhodes and her children, he's invaluable.

"They've had anxiety and panic attacks, they've been crying," she said.

There are additional fears that for a dog like Ra's breed to be out in the heatwave currently affecting Western Australia that it could be deadly.

The family is urging anyone who has the puppy to take him to a vet or pound, not to just let him loose.

"We are offering a reward for his safe return," Rhodes said.

"Whatever story you want to make up, we don't care, we just want our puppy home."

Police are investigating.
