European backpackers mauled by shark in deadly attack on NSW coast

A woman and a man bitten by a shark in a fatal attack on the NSW Mid North Coast are European backpackers who were holidaying in Australia.

About 6.30am, emergency services were called to a beach at Crowdy Bay near Port Macquarie – an unpatrolled beach known to be a shark hotspot.

Bystanders from a nearby campsite provided aid to the victims before paramedics arrived but a woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, died at the scene.

The woman's boyfriend, a man also aged in his 20s, was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital with serious injuries.

NSW Ambulance said the man was in a stable condition.

Ambulance Superintendent Joshua Smyth praised a bystander who applied a makeshift tourniquet to the man's leg, saying they "potentially saved his life".

Police said whether more than one shark had been involved in the attack would be a matter of investigation.

Multiple beaches have been closed, with Surf Life Saving working to secure signage to let beach-goers know ahead of an anticipated hot weekend.

There will be extra surveillance at patrolled beaches on the weekend.

It's not known when the closed beaches will be reopened, though it is believed it could be for at least a few days.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce told 2GB the association was sending up surveillance drones and personnel to support police and the Department of Primary Industries.

"These incidents are horrific for everyone, and unfortunately we've had a few this year," he said.

"This area, it's just so remote, you know, there's no lifeguarding service up there at all."

In a press conference today, NSW Surf Rescue's James Turner said the tragic incident was a reminder of the risks people face when they go swimming on non-patrolled beaches.

"This is in a nice, secluded area where people go to swim, we want them to be aware of the risk in non-patrolled locations," he said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

‘Endless despair’ for family of couple killed by taekwondo master

The screams of a Sydney couple brutally murdered by a martial arts teacher still ring in the ears of their loved ones.

Kwang Kyung Yoo was forced to face his victims' supporters today, more than 18 months after strangling Steven Cho and his wife Min, as well as a seven-year-old student.

Wearing crocheted flowers on their lapels, the loved ones of the deceased filled the public gallery of the NSW Supreme Court.

As a supporter read an impact statement from Min's parents in Korean, she took glances at Yoo, who sat with his head bowing lower and lower as the words washed over him.

"Our lives have been utterly destroyed," an English translation of the statement said.

"Ordinary days, small happinesses, laughter and conversation – all of them have disappeared.

"What remains is only excruciating pain and endless despair."

Sobs and sniffs reverberated through the courtroom as the depth of the family's grief was laid bare.

Yoo did not raise his head as the parents recounted how Steven and Min Cho, as well as the boy, were killed.

The instructor admits he strangled Min, 41, and the seven-year-old boy at his North Parramatta taekwondo school in February 2024.

He then drove Min's white BMW to her home in Baulkham Hills, where he fatally stabbed 39-year-old Steven.

"Even now we can still hear the screams and tears … as their lives were wrongfully taken," the statement said.

"Every moment we breathe is painful and being alive in itself feels like a punishment."

Min's brother made a lament to the heavens, asking what his family had done to deserve a tragedy like this.

"Why were our ancestors so cruel to us?" his victim impact statement said.

"What wrong did we commit that they had to take her and upset mum?"

Yoo's interpreter began wiping away tears as the brother laid out everything he wished he had told his younger sister.

"Mum's vanity table is piled high with tissues soaked in tears as she thinks of you," his statement said.

"Whenever I was struggling, I knew I could reach out to you – my only little sister.

"Now I am left alone, what do I do?"

Though the agreed statement of facts did not point to a specific motive, police had found 51-year-old was interested in luxury items, social status, and wealth.

He previously lied about qualifying for the 2000 Olympic Games and earning a PhD in exercise science.

Yoo once showed the mother of one of his students a photo, which showed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a Lamborghini, and falsely claimed it was the view from his home, with a car he owned.

Shortly before the murders, Yoo had lied to his wife, telling her a school where he worked would soon provide him with a BMW.

He would arrive at Westmead Hospital in a BMW belonging to the deceased, an hour after the 39-year-old stabbed him in self-defence.

The hearing continues.

Severe storm tears roofs off houses, shut race track near Brisbane

Queensland has been hit by more severe storms, with winds of more than 100km/h battering regions south of Brisbane.

Roofs were torn off houses, trees and powerlines were sent crashing down, and the turf club in town had some of its facilities destroyed as Warwick was in the firing line in another day of wild weather for the state.

The morning light revealed sheets of metal roofing littering the front lawns of Victoria Street, with the garage door of a house on the street also being ripped away during the storm.

The Warwick Turf Club suffered damage to some of its facilities.

Trees also toppled onto backyards and even into houses, though no injuries have been reported from last night's storm, which ripped through the town at around 8.30pm (AEST).

The Warwick Turf Club was forced to temporarily close after some of its facilities and infrastructure were destroyed in the storm.

The machinery shed was torn to pieces and collapsed within minutes, while part of the clubhouse roof also went flying due to the high winds.

Trees and powerlines were down across Warwick.

"It's a bit devastating," track manager Maurice Monckton said.

"At the end of the day, at least the track's still good."

The local golf club is also expected to be closed for several days, losing around $10,000 in trade as a result.

Despite the local school being in what locals describe as "a mess", it remained open today and hasn't suffered significant damage.

The clean-up effort continues around the town, with a number of power poles still needing to be repaired after they were felled in the storm, with locals still expecting more spring and early summer storms to come their way.

Six more sunscreens recalled over concerns about SPF labelling

Six more sunscreens sold throughout Australia have been recalled over concerns about their SPF claims.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says the products were voluntarily pulled from shelves when testing showed their levels of SPF or sun protection factor were lower than what was shown on labelling.

The recalled sunscreens are: The Fountain of Youth Environmental Defence Cream SPF50+; Ethical Zinc Daily Wear Light Sunscreen SPF50+; Ethical Zinc Daily Wear Tinted Facial Sunscreen (Light); Daily Wear Tinted Facial Sunscreen (Dark); Endota Mineral Protect SPF50 Sunscreen; and Allganic Light Sunscreen SPF50+ 70g – Baby & Kid Sunscreen.

The recalls come after 20 other sunscreens were removed from sale.

Ultra Violette's Lean Screen SPF 50+ sunscreen was one of the first to be pulled from shelves in August.

Additional sunscreens using the same base formulation have voluntarily cancelled their listing on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and are under review by the TGA.

The regulator warned applying the products could increase the risk of sunburn and reduce the long-term effectiveness of preventing skin cancer.

The TGA advises consumers to return the product to the place of purchase and contact the brand behind the sunscreen for a refund.

A full list of recalled sunscreens and sponsor contact details can be found on the TGA website here.
