Locals in a suburb on the NSW South Coast are being told it is too late to leave as a bushfire approaches.

The fire is just a couple of hundred of metres from homes including a retirement village, Coastal Waters Retirement Village in Worrowing Heights, which has told 9News its 500 residents are sheltering in place.

An emergency warning was issued for Worrowing Heights in Shoalhaven this afternoon amid windy and hot weather and remained in place at 7.30pm.

Locals in a suburb south of Sydney are being told it is too late to leave as a bushfire approaches.

A fire was burning out of control north of Sanctuary Point, south of The Wool road and to the west and east of Larmer Avenue.

"If you are in the Worrowing Heights area, you are in danger. It is now too late to leave," the warning reads.

"Seek shelter now inside a solid structure such as a house."

Firefighters and water bombing aircraft are attacking the blaze, which flared up in the past two hours, fuelled by gusty, unpredictable winds.

Swampy, dense bushland is making it challenging for crews but they are doing everything they can to protect lives and homes.

Those in the nearby areas of Sanctuary Point, Old Erowal Bay and Erowal Bay were told to prepare to leave.

Firefighters are currently working to slow the spread of the fire, but the wind threatens to blow embers long distances.

Temperatures hit 27 degrees in the area on Sunday afternoon, with winds up to 13km an hour.

Dozens of firefighters are battling a blaze at a furniture factory in Sydney's west.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said crews are currently trying to control the fire, and it is too early to say why it started.

"The situation is ongoing and developing," he said.

"We'll get the fire out first before we start to have a look at where and how it started."

Police, paramedics and the energy authority are also on scene.

The Midwest Coast and Midwest Inland, including Geraldton, Northampton, Chapman Valley, Mingenew, Morawa, Perenjori and Three Springs, will be under an extreme warning.

Parts of the Kimberley, north interior, Pilbara, Burrup, Ashburton, Exmouth, west interior, Yalgar, Gascoyne, Lesueur, Yarra Yarra, Lockwood, Mortlock, Avon and Swan will be under a high warning while remaining parts of the state face moderate warnings.

The trough is expected to generate moisture, which could cause thunderstorms across the western and southwestern parts of the state from as early as tomorrow.

But, as the week goes on, temperatures will fall.

Perth will likely see storms beginning on Wednesday and Thursday, with the mercury expected to drop to 26 degrees by Saturday.

Storms will lash Geraldton and Gascoyne starting tomorrow and into Tuesday before conditions clear.

Temperatures will fall to 26 degrees in Geraldton and 34 degrees in Gascoyne by Saturday.
