Snowtown killer’s parole appeal hearing to be heard in secret

A date has been set for a hearing on a bid to block the youngest Snowtown serial killer from being released on parole, but it will be shrouded in secrecy.

The hearing will take place on December 5, but it will be held behind closed doors and the media won't be permitted to attend, because under law these proceedings are always conducted in secret.

Reporters attended a brief hearing this morning, along with legal representatives, including the lawyer for James Vlassakis.

Vlassakis, now 45 years old, was controversially granted parole in August after serving 26 years, but the South Australian attorney-general launched an 11th-hour bid to put that release on ice.

Vlassakis was convicted over four of the 11 Snowtown murders in the 1990s.

Parole board commissioner Michael David KC allowed a discussion about whether the media could be given access to the high-profile appeal, but he ruled these hearings must take place in private.

BoM backflips on controversial rain radar on new website

The Bureau of Meteorology has backflipped on one of the more contentious elements of its controversial new $4.1 million website, announcing it will revert the default display for its rain radar.

The weather bureau has faced criticism from some users, as well as Queensland Premier David Crisafulli and federal Environment Minister Murray Watt, over the redesigned website.

After previously pledging to take that feedback on board and tweak the new design, acting chief executive Peter Stone announced this afternoon that the BoM has changed the default display of its new-look radar, which has been a particular target of public displeasure.

Instead of showing the "rain rate" in millimetres per hour, the radar will now go back to showing "rain reflectivity", which was what was standard on the old website.

"We've listened to your feedback, and have restored the previous radar colour scheme," Stone said.

"We will continue to assess options for further updates and improvements at the same time as pushing on with our efforts to help the community become more familiar with the new website."

He added that further adjustments would be rolled out soon.

"More changes are in the pipeline," Stone said.

The change to the radar went live this morning, although users can choose to change the view to rain rate if they prefer.

The move comes after Watt met with Stone earlier this week to tell him to improve the site.

"I made clear my expectations that the BOM needed to consider this feedback and, where appropriate, adjust the website's settings as soon as possible," the environment minister said in a statement.

"This includes urgent consideration of improvements to the website's functionality and usability…

"Australians deserve to have confidence in these important services."

New websites often face criticism from users who are used to the previous layout, and matters were complicated for the BoM by the fact its relaunch went live on October 22, days before severe storms hit Brisbane.

On Wednesday, Scott insisted the new site was "specifically designed to enhance access to public safety information".

"The Bureau's forecasts and warnings are now more prominent, easily accessible and relevant to your location," he added.

However, he also acknowledged the public criticism and apologised for the challenges some users had faced.

"It's clear we need to do more to help people through the change, both by making adjustments to the website and by helping users to understand its new features," Stone said.

Heartbroken dad says son would be ‘stoked’ with touching cricket tributes

The grieving dad of a Melbourne teen who was killed in a tragic cricket training accident this week says his son would be "stoked" to see the outpouring of support in the wake of his death.

Ben Austin, 17, died in hospital yesterday morning after he was hit in the neck while batting in the nets at Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully on Tuesday afternoon.

His family today returned the nets, where a tribute of flowers and cricket bats has been growing.

"We just wanted to be where he last stood. And then the sun came through the clouds. It was beautiful, just what we needed," father Jace said.

"I thought I'd never get back there, but Benny would have wanted that because he just loved the game."

Ben's dad said the 17-year-old played cricket as much as he could.

"He used to play Friday night, Saturday, Saturday afternoon and Sunday. He loved it," he said.

"He wanted to be a boundary umpire, a PE teacher and get as high as he could with his cricket."

Jace thanked emergency services and the Ferntree Gully Cricket Club for helping to treat Ben at the scene.

"We got another three days out of him because they helped get him back to the hospital so that we could just spend nights with him and that will be with me forever. Thank you everyone."

He urged the community not to let the tragedy deter them from playing "the great game" of cricket.

"It wasn't the game's fault, it was just a freak accident," Jace said.

"So please make sure you keep playing this great game."

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 31: Victorian and Tasmanian players lay their bats and caps in honour of the late Ben Austin during day four of the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Tasmania at CitiPower Centre, on October 31, 2025, in Melbourne, Australia.

Touching tribute from nation's top cricketers

Jace said the Ferntree Gully teen would be "stoked" to see a touching tribute by Australia's top cricketers in the wake of his death.

Players from Victoria and Tasmania held a minute's silence before today's final day of play in their Sheffield Shield clash in Melbourne.

They also lined up their bats and caps against the Junction Oval's white picket fence and wore black armbands in memory of Austin, echoing the same tributes cricketers around the country made following the death of Test batter Phillip Hughes in 2014.

Black armbands were also worn by Australian and Indian players during the two sides' Women's World Cup semi-final overnight, as well as in the other two Shield matches currently under way in Brisbane and Perth.

Ben's uncle, David Anstey, sifted through a growing wall of tributes for the teenager at the nets where he spent his last moments.

"He's just the most special kid you could ever meet," Anstey said.

"He's respectful of everyone, whether it's his teammates, schoolmates, club members, old, young.

"We all love him and miss him dearly."

Virginia Giuffre’s family celebrates as Andrew loses ‘prince’ title

Prince Andrew will be stripped of his "prince" title and move out of the Royal Lodge, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The process to officially remove the 65-year-old's remaining royal titles is now underway and he will be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

It is the latest move from the palace, weeks after it was announced Andrew would no longer use his Duke of York title following renewed scrutiny on his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew will leave the Royal Lodge and move to Sandringham, in Norfolk, one of two privately owned residences by King Charles.

His two daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, will retain their titles, as they are the daughters of the son of a Sovereign, in line with King George V's Letters Patent of 1917.

Andrew has always strenuously denied the allegations made against him.

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 16: Prince Andrew, Duke of York, King Charles III and Prince William, Prince of Wales attend the Funeral of the Duchess of Kent at Westminster Cathedral on September 16, 2025 in London, England. Katharine, Duchess of Kent was married to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. She died on September 4 at the age of 92 at Kensington Palace surrounded by her family. Having converted to Catholicism in 1994, her funeral takes place at Westminste

The family of Virginia Giuffre, the woman who alleged Andrew had sex with her several times when she was a teenager – a claim Andrew has strenuously denied – released a statement in support of the prince being stripped of his titles.

"Today, an ordinary American girl from an ordinary American family, brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage," Giuffre's brother Skye Roberts and sister-in-law Amanda told the BBC.

"Virginia Roberts Giuffre, our sister, a child when she was sexually assaulted by Andrew, never stopped fighting for accountability for what had happened to her and to countless other survivors like her.

"Today, she declares victory. We, her family, along with her survivor sisters, continue Virginia's battle and will not rest until the same accountability applies to all of the abusers and abettors connected to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell."

Andrew's new home will be one of the properties at Sandringham, the Norfolk estate where the royals traditionally celebrate Christmas.

It is understood his future accommodation will be privately funded by King Charles.
