Murderer dragged bloodied from Sydney court after guilty verdict

A murderer has left court in an ambulance after being convicted of the brutal killing of the woman who rejected a long-term relationship with him.

Paul Jason Sultana was found guilty of the January 2023 strangling murder of mother-of-two Dayna Isaac in the NSW Supreme Court today.

But rather than leaving in a prison truck, he was rushed out of court on a stretcher tended by paramedics.

Sultana stabbed himself in the left arm with a sharp implement after hearing Justice Peter Garling's verdict in the King Street courthouse.

The 35-year-old was tended to by sheriff's officers and court staff while an ambulance was called.

He sobbed loudly and had a bloodied left arm as he was wheeled out of court by paramedics.

Mother-of-two Dayna Isaac was found dead in a Penrith unit.

The incident played out in front of Isaac's family, including her father Garry English.

He told reporters outside court that Sultana's guilty verdict was a good outcome for his "princess".

Justice Garling found Issac's murder followed a brief relationship between the two friends.

The relationship was "unsettled" and involved a jealous Sultana being unable to accept a relationship of the kind Isaac desired.

The trial heard evidence from Sultana's mother, Janet Tsiliris, who was called by her son in the aftermath of the murder.

The killer later picked up his mother in Isaac's car and took her to the victim's apartment in the western Sydney suburb of Penrith, where the murder occurred.

"I walked in the front door and saw blood in the entry way near the lounge room on the floor," Sultana's mother told investigators.

After seeing Isaac with blood on her face, Tsiliris ran out of the unit yelling "I'm gone, I'm out of here."

English gave evidence outlining conversations he had with Sultana, including one in which he said his daughter was not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with her eventual killer.

"I said to him, 'Paul, Dayna likes you as a friend and nothing more'," English said in his statement.

"He got in my face and told me that I have to tell Dayna that he was good for her."

Sultana argued an unknown third party killed Issac while he was sound asleep in her unit.

He is expected to face sentencing before the end of the year.

Water gushing from mouldy ceiling in WA woman’s builder nightmare

The Nicheliving nightmare continues for one of its former customers.

There are calls for the WA state government to stump up more money in support a year on from its deal with the builder, which no longer exists.

Kathy Ellis is among those left in the lurch as mould grows in her ceiling and water gushes from it.

Five days after moving into her Perth property, hopes she was finally in her dream home went down the drain.

Every time she turns on a tap upstairs, water falls from the ceiling into strategically placed buckets downstairs.

Ellis says she can't get hold of the builder's plumber.

"The assessor that came out, his concern is, the weight of it is going to actually make the ceiling come down," she said.

"And it was him that discovered that in the ceiling, there's communications PVC piping, instead of plumbing piping.

"He laughed, he said 'this has got to be a joke?'. I said, 'No, it was built by Nicheliving so –' and he goes, 'Oh okay'."

The nightmare in Canning Vale doesn't end there, with mould growing in multiple rooms.

"The stress of all that, I can't get to sleep and then I'm waking up at 4 o'clock every morning going 'oh my god, I can hear dripping'."

Nicheliving left hundreds of Perth customers with unfinished homes when the construction company collapsed.

The WA state government was forced into a $40 million bailout in October last year.

Ellis is now fighting to have this $100,000 debacle covered, with the building regulator now investigating her case.

"The government should be considering an ex-gratia payment to assist her because of the failure of state government and the regulators to properly pursue Nicheliving in the first place," WA Nationals leader Shane Love told 9News.

While the directors of Nicheliving are now banned from building in Western Australia, that hasn't stopped them becoming property developers and rebranding as Australian Property Alliance.

Man fighting for life, woman charged with attempted murder after stabbing north of Brisbane

A 24-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after a stabbing north of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to a home in Kippa Ring before 4.45am today, where police said a 30-year-old man was found with a stab wound to his chest.

The man was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police charged the woman, who is from the nearby suburb of Rothwell and is known to the man, with one count of attempted murder.

She has been refused bail.

She is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Suspended Townsville mayor resigns from role but vows to run in byelection

Suspended Queensland mayor Troy Thompson has resigned from his position amid a probe by the state's crime and corruption commission but has vowed to recontest the top job in an upcoming byelection.

Thompson formally resigned from Townsville City Council today after he was suspended for a year on full pay of $225,000 by the Queensland government last November.

The 54-year-old, who was elected to the position in March last year, came under fire over claims he exaggerated his military service history and university qualifications to impress voters in the military city.

Local government minister Ann Leahy issued the former One Nation Party member with a show cause notice last week after she received an interim briefing on a probe by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

The notice gave Thompson 14 days to explain why he should not be terminated from the position of mayor.

Thompson, who has resigned from the role before the notice period was due to lapse, said he wanted to take a "deliberate and principled stand to protect the democratic rights of the people of Townsville".

Thompson was elected as mayor in March last year.

"This resignation is not an admission of wrongdoing," he said in a video posted to social media.

"Political interference has no place in our democracy, only the community should decide who leads this city.

"A vote for Troy Thompson is no longer just a vote for a person, it is a vote to protect our democracy."

In an interview with A Current Affair last year, Thompson admitted when he told voters about his military service history, he "probably didn't say it right pre-election" and put his cloudy memory down to health issues.

"Those who know me know that I've had multiple concussions, 100-plus, and I suffer from epilepsy," he said at the time.

"That's not an excuse, but what it says is you're going to forget things from time to time."
