A "careless" and illegal beach campfire sparked the first major bushfire on Queensland's Moreton Island in six years, authorities have said.

Long weekend campers were evacuated to the western side of the tourist island in the state's south-east yesterday as firefighters worked to control the out-of-control blaze.

The bushfire razed around 640 hectares before fire crews could contain it.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) ranger Jay Lessons said around 480 campers are still on Moreton Island.

Around 20 campers were asked to move from the northern edge of the island during the peak of the fire yesterday.

"We still have work to do, but we have the fire where we want it," Lessons said.

"More smoke is expected today, with a wind change coming from north.

"Smoke will be visible on the island and heading to Brisbane."

He warned changing conditions could have a big impact, meaning today's efforts would be crucial in fighting the fire.

"We do have bigger winds coming in tomorrow and through to Tuesday and Wednesday," Lessons added.

"So today's really the day for us to get our backburning operations done while conditions are favourable."

A total fire ban has been in place from Thursday until at least October 7 due to hot and dry conditions in the region.

The last time there was a large major bushfire event on Moreton Island was 2019, Lessons said.

Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) Acting Chief Superintendent Neil Parker said the out-of-control fire began with an unauthorised campfire on the beach.

It sparked a "massive response" from the fire service.

The blaze spread over the northern side of the 37-kilometre-long island and needed around 32 firefighters and aerial waterbombing to get it under control yesterday and early today.

Parker warned holidaymakers to avoid lighting unauthorised fires, especially during a total fire ban.

"When careless things like this happen, it has a big impact, particularly on our volunteers who go out all hours of the night to keep our community safe," he said.

"We just need everyone to be vigilant and safe. Use common sense."

Parker said the crews will be battling to keep the bushfire contained for another two days.

"While everyone's watching the football, our crews will be out there making sure the community is safe," he added.

A watch and act warning remains in place for large parts of Moreton Island across areas north of Middle Road, including Cowan Cowan, Bulwer and Blue Lagoon.

"If you are on the western side of the island and you decide to leave, travel only along the beach," Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR) said.

"If you are on the eastern side of the island, travel along the beach to Middle Road and then down the beach to Tangalooma Island Resort."

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the bushfire.

Anyone who breaches a total fire ban declaration could face heavy penalties, including large fines.

Nathalie Matthew, the former partner of controversial NSW MP Mark Latham, has been charged with several revenge-porn-related offences after being arrested at Sydney Airport.

Matthews, 38, was taken into custody after arriving in Sydney on a flight from Dubai about 7am today.

She was taken to Mascot Police Station, where she was charged with one count each of access/modify restricted data held in a computer, intentionally record intimate image without consent, and intentionally distribute intimate image without consent.

Matthews has been refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Local Court tomorrow.

The arrest comes after Matthews made an unrelated private application for an apprehended violence order against Latham in July.

Matthews accused Latham of emotional, psychological and financial manipulation in her filing, as well as pressuring her to participate in depraved acts and driving his car at her.

Latham has strenuously denied the allegations, and police have not laid any charges over them.

The matter is set down for a court hearing next May.

Latham said he has had no contact with Matthews since May 27, when their relationship ended, outside of matters relating to a co-owned harness racing horse and returning belongings to her apartment.

In an unrelated incident, Latham was escorted out of Sydney's Royal Randwick racecourse yesterday.

A spokesperson for the Australian Turf Club told the Sydney Morning Herald that Latham was asked to leave by management during the Epsom Day racing event yesterday afternoon but refused.

Latham has threatened legal action following the incident.

Police are looking for a driver who fled into bushland after crashing into another car in Sydney's west.

Highway patrol officers attempted to stop an Audi travelling along Spring Garden Street in Granville about 11.50am today.

When the driver failed to stop, a police chase began.

The Audi then crashed into another car at the intersection of Railway Parade and The Avenue, police said.

An occupant of the car suffered minor injuries but declined an ambulance.

The driver of the Audi then ran from the scene and into nearby bushland.

Police, along with the Dog Squad, are now looking for the driver.

An investigation is ongoing.

A vet testified that the injury the dog, Finn, suffered was quite rare.

A 17-year-old boy has been refused bail after allegedly threatening a woman and two children before leading police on a 100km chase in western NSW.

Police were called to a carpark on Montkeila Road, Walgett, around 691km from Sydney, yesterday afternoon.

A 35-year-old woman had her car allegedly stolen by the teenage boy.

She told police she and her two children, aged two and four, were threatened by the boy, who was allegedly armed with a machete and demanded she hand him the keys to her car.

Police then saw the car travelling south on the Castlereagh Highway towards Coonamble, where police attempted to stop the vehicle.

The teenage boy refused to stop, so a pursuit was initiated that lasted 100km.

It ended when the police deployed road spikes around 20km north of Coonamble, and the 17-year-old was subsequently arrested.

He was taken to Walgett Police Station and charged with multiple offences, including armed robbery, aggravated assault with intent to take and drive a motor vehicle with a weapon, hinder or resisting police.

He appeared before a Children's Court today.

Six new automated pollen counters are being rolled out in Victoria to help improve forecasting for thunderstorm asthma.

Thunderstorm asthma refers to episodes of asthma symptoms that occur when high pollen levels are combined with a thunderstorm.

The pollen particles are broken down in even smaller levels than normal, allowing them to get deeper in the lungs and potentially triggering serious asthma attacks.

"You can get really grass pollens being really sent for long distances and exposed to the environmental triggers," Australian Medical Association President Dr Tony Bartone said on Weekend Today.

"And they can get very get really deep into the lungs of asthma sufferers in particular, and bring on fairly serious asthma episodes."

Significant events can even cause serious attacks in people who do not regularly have asthma; one such event in Victoria in 2016 led to 10 deaths as emergency services were overwhelmed with the number of calls for people suffering asthma attacks.

Bartone said the new pollen counters are an aid for asthma sufferers, but stressed they also needed to have their own plans in place.

"It's about being prepared for those days and understanding what are your triggers," he said.

"How to use your puffers or your other reliever medication or your preventer medication regularly and appropriately if you're susceptible. And having an understanding of the action plan that you put into place.

"Understanding the signs and acting early if you are feeling tight, if you're feeling short of breath, if you've got that cough, if you've got that wheeze, they're the signs that you're experiencing an asthma episode."

Bartone also warned sufferers of hayfever to be aware of their symptoms, saying the crossover between asthma and hayfever is high.

"This is the time of year where we have a lots of people complaining [about] the streaming eyes, the runny nose, the sneezing, it's the high pollen counts," he said. 

"But there are other triggers for hay fever as well that sufferers suffer from."
