A man has been arrested after a 52-year-old was found dead at a home in north-west Melbourne.

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after the man's body was discovered at a property on Porter Street in Templestowe about 5.20am today.

A 54-year-old man from Pascoe Vale was arrested at the home and remains in custody.

Police believe the men are known to each other.

One neighbour told 9News they heard some "banging" about 5am.

Vision of the home shows a smashed window and broken glass on the patio.

Detectives remained at the scene this evening.

The circumstances surrounding the deceased man's death remain unknown.

An investigation is ongoing.

A man has been charged after a Melbourne synagogue was repeatedly targeted with graffiti.

The 37-year-old was charged with multiple offences, including six counts of criminal damage and six counts of offensive graffiti, following a search warrant at his South Yarra home today.

Police allege he spray-painted offensive phrases on the outside walls of Melbourne Hebrew Congregation on Toorak Road in South Yarra six times between March and July this year.

Investigators seized items related to the alleged offending.

He was also charged with five counts of using an unregistered motor vehicle, five counts of unlicensed driving and one count of failing to stop on police direction.

Police released CCTV of an alleged vandal targeting the synagogue earlier this month.

CCTV footage shows a man arriving on a black e-scooter and in two instances in July he was seen wearing a Scream mask, which covered his face.

The alleged graffiti incidents at the heritage-listed synagogue took place on March 11, June 21, June 22, July 22 and July 30, police said.

In some instances, messaging including "free Palestine" and "Iran is da bomb" were painted in red and blue spray paint across the wall of the synagogue.

"Police certainly take a dim view of this sort of abhorrent behaviour in the public arena," Inspector Martin McLean said at the time.

The man was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on November 21.

National Australia Bank (NAB) will start using selfies to help combat the spread of identity theft from next month.

The bank said the new feature will be a breakthrough in the fight against cybercriminals.

NAB said new customers will verify their identity using their biometric data, also known as full facial recognition.

It's designed to stop stolen licences and passports being used to open dummy bank accounts, which is a fast-moving problem in the world of scams.

"Over 255,000 Australians a year have their identity stolen or compromised," Head of NAB group investigations Chris Sheehan told 9News Finance Editor Chris Kohler.

"Now that number, I suspect, is on the low side.

"We're confident we're going to make a real difference."

Industry analysts support the move, but say with more data actually comes more exposure.

"What we need to worry about is where is this information being held," technology expert Trevor Long said.

"This is the last thing we want, our names, our details and photos of ourselves being hacked."

NAB said there are no plans to make existing customers verify in this way and that anyone concerned should visit a branch in person to open a new account.

The move comes as the ACCC reports scam losses are increasing, with $175 million lost in just the first half of this year alone.

NRL star Brandon Smith has been charged with dangerous drug supply, as well as using inside knowledge for betting, by police in Queensland.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs hooker was questioned by officers at Gold Coast Airport earlier this month.

Police have now confirmed the 29-year-old Smith was charged last week – before taking to the field in Souths' win over the St George-Illawarra Dragons on Thursday night – and is due to appear in court next month.

"A 29-year-old man has been issued with a summons by Queensland Police on August 20 for supplying dangerous drugs and using or disclosing inside knowledge for betting," a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

"The man is expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on September 18.

"Investigations by detectives from the Organised Crime Gangs Group, Taskforce Maxima, South Eastern Region, are continuing."

Maxima is the taskforce established by Queensland Police in 2013 to combat outlaw bikie gangs, but in 2017 had its remit expanded to include all forms of organised crime.

In a statement, South Sydney said it was aware of the charges against Smith.

"The South Sydney Rabbitohs are aware of allegations made by Queensland Police against player Brandon Smith," a spokesperson for the club said.

"The club has informed the NRL Integrity Unit about the allegations.

"As this matter is part of a Queensland Police investigation, the Rabbitohs will be making no further comment at this stage."

An NRL spokesperson told 9news.com.au that the league is "aware of the matter and is liaising with the club".

After he was questioned at Gold Coast Airport, police had said there was no suggestion Smith had done anything wrong, although they did acknowledge the investigation was running.

"It was opportunistic for us," Queensland Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy told 4BC radio on August 14.

"But we spoke to him, he cooperated with us and we have an ongoing police matter there."

At the time, the NRL told Wide World of Sports it had "no information relating to a potential breach of the NRL rules by the player".

Smith has played 152 NRL games in a nine-year career for the Melbourne Storm, Sydney Roosters and Rabbitohs.

He won the 2020 premiership with the Storm and has represented New Zealand in more than a dozen rugby league internationals.

Injuries have limited him to just four games for Souths this season.

A critical incident has been declared in Sydney after a man died after falling from a unit balcony while he was being pursued by police.

Police allege the 49-year-old man robbed a nearby grocery store with a knife in a "frightening" confrontation before he fell from the home in Surry Hills about 9.10pm yesterday.

CCTV from Aruma Grocery on the next street shows a man in a mask wielding a large knife.

The man allegedly threatened two people in the shop around 8pm yesterday and took a cash register containing around $180.

Shop owner Faris Alwiswih said a customer in the shop, on Devonshire Street tried to stop him using a mop.

"We refused to give him him any cash, he took the whole cash register and ran away from the shop," Alwiswih said.

He met up outside with a woman police allege is Tiahna Hatch, 21, and they bolted across the busy road and light rail track to an apartment block.

Police headed to the apartments in Belvoir Street an hour later as part of their investigations.

A man and woman were in the hallway of the units when police arrived, with police saying he ran when he saw officers.

"As police approached the unit a man believed to be aged in his 40s has run from the unit block and jumped over a balcony and has fallen five storeys and is unfortunately deceased," Acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner said.

Police gave the man first aid until paramedics arrived.

He was rushed to hospital but died on the way.

Hatch faced court today on charges including robbery with an offensive weapon.

She was granted bail and walked from Surry Hills police station early this afternoon.

A critical incident team from Inner West Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
